Dear Neighbor, This year the 47th Ward office ordered $23,000 worth of trees from our aldermanic menu fund to replace dead and missing trees along the tree pits of our major commercial streets. Forty-six new trees, mostly disease resistant Elms, were planted last week primarily along Lincoln and Western Avenues. Relatively low cost, trees are great urban investments as they beautify business districts, calm traffic, absorb pollution, provide oxygen and give residents pride of place. Tree planting locations were based on 311 requests and input from you. My office will continue to allocate aldermanic menu funds to green our community. Be on the lookout for the new trees!
Election Day Turnout I want to extend my thanks to everyone who voted on Tuesday. Turnout in the 47th Ward was high! Thank you for making your voices heard. And, thank you for letting us know your experiences at the polls on election day. I will report all the comments we received to the Chicago Board of Elections, the independent authority that runs elections in Chicago. I know there were some hiccups and confusion with voting under the new ward precinct map. I can assure you the Board of Elections will be taking steps to ensure these issues are ironed out for the next set of elections in 2014. Again, thank you for voting on Tuesday and keeping our democracy strong. Infrastructure Projects As you've all seen, there are a number of infrastructure projects taking place throughout various locations in the ward. My office has been working proactively with City departments, and private utilities and developers to coordinate construction activities, and expedite work progress while limiting disruptions to you. But even with all this coordination, these projects will create some amount of disruptive. I have heard from many of you. I understand how frustrating and disruptive it can all be. And I know it feels like it is all happening at once. Much of the work we are doing has been delayed for decades. For example, the water mains that are being replaced under many of our commercial and residential streets are over 100 years old, mains that can fail at any time. Our ward has more of these mains than most areas in the City of Chicago. For decades, issues like water main replacements were not addressed locally or city-wide. The work we are doing not only improves service quality but ensures your safety. Whether it is the new Metra bridges, water mains or gas lines, the dated infrastructure not only costs you more but impacts your safety. I want to get as much of this work done as quickly as possible so the work doesn't extend out for many years. In the meantime, please click here to see a map of where all work is taking place. My office will be holding a community meeting on my overall vision for Lawrence Avenue improvements on November 15 at 6.30pm at McPherson School. Finally, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Click here to see all the projects my office is leading. And, as always, please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions, concerns or feedback. Have a great weekend. Sincerely,

47th Ward Block Audits - DUE DEC. 1
|
Every year each Chicago ward is allotted $1.3 million to be used for a "menu" of infrastructure maintenance and improvements in their wards. In the 47th Ward, my office is striving to make the process for allocating this menu fund as inclusive, participatory and expeditious as possible. To this end we have developed a Block Audit. Links to a printable version and online version can be found below.
Online 47th Ward Block Audit
Printable 47th Ward Block Audit
We are striving to have each block in our ward complete the audit. Audits must be completed and returned (or submitted online) to the 47th Ward Office by December 1, 2012. We will review the data from these audits along with data from the City's 311 system and city departments to create a list of possible public projects for your area. This list will be submitted to your local neighborhood group in January and we will ask the groups to rank the possible projects in order of importance.
While $1.3 million never goes as far as we would like, we want to know which priorities are most important to you and your neighbors. If we are not able to fund all identified projects in 2013, we will consider them for the following year. We look forward to working together with all of you to ensure that our menu dollars are being spent where they are needed most.
Please fill out the forms to the best of your ability. If you have questions, please call or email Jim Poole in my office at 773-549-4462 or jim@chicago47.org.

Northcenter Chamber Hosts Annual Veterans Day Observance
|
Northcenter, Chicago - The Northcenter Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Veterans Day Observance on Sunday, November 11 at 11:00 a.m. in Northcenter Town Square, 4100 N. Damen. The event will begin with cadets from the Lakeview High School JROTC presenting the color guard ceremony. Event speakers will be local elected officials and Northcenter Chamber executives. "We are thankful every day for our men and women in the military," said Northcenter Chamber Executive Director Garrett FitzGerald. "This is an opportunity for the community to celebrate the patriotism and willingness to serve of all the people that have worn a uniform." Veterans Day events traditionally begin at 11:00 a.m. to commemorate the temporary cessation of World War 1 hostilities between the Allied Nations and Germany that went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The event will take place in front of the new flag pole installed by the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce after a car accident in 2011 destroyed the previous pole. A final speaker list will be announced at the end of the week and will be available on the Northcenter Chamber website.

Bring Hats, Mittens, Gloves and Scarves to the 47th Ward Office
|
During the holiday season, Ravenswood Community Services (RCS) collects hats, mittens, gloves, and scarves to hand out to neighbors in need. This year, RCS will distribute the warm items on December 20th at the Tuesday Night Food Pantry and Community Kitchen. Chicago's winter is long and cold, and many of our neighbors need help to stay warm. Please consider donating new or handmade warm accessories for your neighbors this year. Adult sized hats, mitten, and gloves are needed most for this distribution.
Please drop off your donations at Alderman Pawar's office by Monday, December 19.
For more information about Ravenswood Community Services, to make other donations, and to volunteer please visit their website at or contact the RCS office at 773-769-0282.
Ravenswood Community Services (RCS) provides hunger and poverty relief, health services, and life skills education in the Ravenswood and Uptown neighborhoods. In 1993, RCS began handing out bags of groceries to about 20 neighbors through the front doors of All Saints' Episcopal Church. Today, this vibrant non-profit serves about 350 neighbors each week and implements strategic neighborhood change through its feeding programs and through a partnership with Ravenswood School.

- Information about the proposal can be found at www.hornerpark.org under the "Initiatives" tab, "Dog Friendly Area" link.
- If you want to volunteer to be the media director for this campaign, or in any other capacity, please email dfac@hornerpark.org.

Chamber App Takes Off; Weaves News for Your Community
A Northcenter Chamber of Commerce mobile neighborhood news app is leading to greater engagement between residents and local businesses. The app presents news from neighborhood leaders in real time.
Restaurants, entertainment venues, schools and more are enjoying the advantages of the app. Frequent refreshes of content as well as such standard tools as search, directories and map functions, are creating a favorite tool for users. The content favors local companies and works well with the Shop Local theme of the Northcenter chamber. Local companies are combining their social media to create larger and more varied links.
The app is available free to consumers on Android and iPhones. A smart web page allows access by web browsers, including those on phones with touch screen ability.
To try the app, please click here.
Bulldog Pulls Donors Choose Data
The Welles Park Bulldog has started a new feature, pulling data from Donors Choose and listing it by school on its page. Donors Choose is a website that features small projects usually for educational purposes. The site has no connection to The Bulldog.
The Bulldog listed 38 projects from 11 North Side Chicago public schools. "We'll strive to maintain an updated list," Publisher Patrick Boylan said. The Bulldog is an award winning online news site for the Ravenswood neighborhood.
The schools currently on the list are:
Amundsen High School, Audubon, Bell, Chappell, Coonley, Courtenay, Lake View High School, Lane Tech, McPherson, Ravenswood, Stockton and Trumbull.
Any school in the Ravenswood community able to solicit through Donors Choose will be listed. The listing can be found here.

Dara Reports
|
End of the Season. Over this past summer hundreds of neighborhood families enjoyed an unusual occurrence---absolutely no cars on their streets for a day! How did this happen? Through block parties! We applaud and thank all of the neighbors who organized block parties throughout the 47th Ward, and with 186 this year we arguably have the most number of these neighborhood events in Chicago. Block parties help neighbors meet, get to know one another and feel more connected to their communities. Once folks get together they can have a huge impact on their neighborhoods. They can plan a work day, plant corners or parkways, get involved in their local school, share resources, find good babysitters, exchange equipment or fill out block audits that determine how public money is spent in our ward. Best of all, block parties are fun! We hope that you will consider having a block party next year. The 2013 forms will be on our website in January.
Holiday Hams Needed. Our good friends at Ravenswood Community Services will be distributing food to their clients for Christmas. Please help! We will be collecting 3-5 pound canned hams. Bring them to our office by noon on Wednesday, December 12. Thanks for your generosity.
