Dear Neighbor,

There is a lot going on in the 47th Ward! Over the next few years you will see major improvements completed around our community. Here are some updates:

Bell Elementary School Addition

Last week, Chicago Public Schools, the Public Building Commission, the 47th Ward Office and Principal Sandra Caudill held a community meeting to lay-out the Bell Elementary classrooms addition project, detail the construction timeline and discuss the revised design. After our first community meeting this summer, we (PBC, CPS, my office, and Principal Caudill) received feedback on the proposed design. As a result of your feedback to all of us and Principal Caudill's advocacy, Erin Lavin, Executive Director of the PBC, was able to incorporate feedback into a new and revised design.

Bell School Addition

Construction will begin in the spring of 2013 and the plan is for the new addition to open in February of 2014. If you are interested in following this project, please visit the PBC website or follow the Bell project Twitter feed! (@PBCChi #Bell)

Ravenswood Station: "Mariano's and L.A. Fitness" Project

Many of you have called to inquire about the progress of this new retail center featuring a Mariano's and L.A. Fitness. Great news! The zoning portion of the project passed City Council yesterday. Also yesterday, the final piece of legislation associated with this project was introduced at City Council. The next step is a hearing in the Finance Committee and then a full council vote in mid-November. The process is moving along as planned and on track for a ground-breaking in November!  The project details are on our website

Ravenswood Terrace Residential Apartments

Also clearing the City's zoning process, the Ravenswood Terrace development for the back parcel of the Sears parking lot will become the home to 150 luxury rental units. Ten percent of the rental units will be allocated for affordable housing. Construction is expected in the spring of 2013. For more information on the project, check out our website

Lawrence Avenue Streetscape

After taking office, we re-tooled the Lawrence Avenue streetscape project to incorporate green features, better stormwater management and community identifiers designed by artists in our community. The final design was approved and the contracts for the project are out for bid. We are very excited to break ground here, anticipated for spring 2013. For more information, check out the link on our website.

My office has been working proactively with Metra, CDOT, the Department of Water Management, Walsh Construction, the Lincoln Square-Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce and the Mariano's retail center development team to coordinate construction activities, and to help minimize the impact on surrounding businesses and residents. Still, the number of improvements we have planned for Lawrence will be disruptive. In the next month, we will be hosting a community meeting to walk you through the various construction timelines. As always, please do not hesitate to contact my office with any questions and concerns throughout the duration of the project.

Lycée Français French School

The old Ravenswood Hospital is slowly being demolished. The site will be at grade level by February 2013.  The school is slated to open in January of 2015.

Coonley Elementary Addition

My office is working with the Coonley Elementary Principal, Greg Zurawski, and CPS to develop a project timeline for the school expansion project. More details soon!

Kerry Wood Stadium at Clark Park

We expect the stadium to be completed in the spring of 2013!

Boat House at Clark Park

The construction for the boat house is underway near Rockwell & Addison. We expect it to be completed in 2013. I am looking forward to organizing the first 47th Ward Kayak Ride next year!

47th Ward Block Audits - DUE DEC. 1

Every year each Chicago ward is allotted $1.3 million to be used for a "menu" of infrastructure maintenance and improvements in their wards. In the 47th Ward, my office is striving to make the process for allocating this menu fund as inclusive, participatory and expeditious as possible.  To this end we have developed a Block Audit.  Links to a printable version and online version can be found below.

Online 47th Ward Block Audit

Printable 47th Ward Block Audit

We are striving to have each block in our ward complete the audit. Audits must be completed and returned (or submitted online) to the 47th Ward Office by December 1, 2012. We will review the data from these audits along with data from the City's 311 system and city departments to create a list of possible public projects for your area. This list will be submitted to your local neighborhood group in January and we will ask the groups to rank the possible projects in order of importance.

While $1.3 million never goes as far as we would like, we want to know which priorities are most important to you and your neighbors. If we are not able to fund all identified projects in 2013, we will consider them for the following year. We look forward to working together with all of you to ensure that our menu dollars are being spent where they are needed most.

Please fill out the forms to the best of your ability. If you have questions, please call or email Jim Poole in my office at 773-549-4462 or jim@chicago47.org.

Some of you may also be wondering about all these new companies trying to get our electricity business.  CUB also has information on the electricity suppliers and the new open market.

Dara Reports

Want to Save Money? Please remove leaves from the gutters. The city does not vacuum leaves up and they can break the street sweeper. Unswept gutters lead to the sewers getting clogged with leaves and debris. This costs us all money!  Please "adopt" your sewers and catch basins - keep the tops clear of leaves and litter. This will cut down on flooding. If the drain appears to be clogged after removing leaves from the surface, and water does not drain within 12 hours of rainfall please call our office so we can schedule the sewer for cleaning. To learn more about what you can do for storm water management please click here.

Dog Lovers! Big News for Horner Park! There is a proposal to take a 1.89 acre section at the south end of Horner Park and create a dog friendly area. (Please see here: map of the proposed area, a flyer, as well as a Q & A article that reflects the first conversation with the community). Interested community members have formed a committee and they could use your help. The Dog Friendly Area Committee (the "DFAC") has many tasks to complete.  Would you like to help make a Dog Friendly Area in Horner Park a reality?  Get involved by sending an email.

New "Companion Animal Central" Monthly Report. We are happy to debut this new regular report on animal rescue efforts in our community authored by 47th Ward volunteer and animal activist Susan Russell. Susan will bring us information about homeless companion animals in Chicagoland, the organizations and individuals that are working hard to save their lives, and find them homes; and the many, many ways you can help.

Kidical Mass family bike rides. There are Kidical Mass family bike rides in 3 neighborhoods throughout Chicago. We are fortunate to have one of them right here in the 47th Ward; thanks to dedicated family-bicyclist Nate Hutcheson.

Kidical Mass/Lincoln Square is planning to keep the ride going all winter (conditions permitting) ice on the streets or sleet in the air are two no-go situations. Weather cancellations will be posted here.  They meet at the Welles Park Gazebo, at 10am the 3rd Saturday of the month. The Kidical Mass website shows all the rides in different cities/neighborhoods. There are some great photos that will give you an idea of how much family fun Kidical Mass promotes.

DFSS Fall 2012 Senior Life Enrichment Guide Now Available. The fall issue of the Chicago Department of Family and Support Service's Senior Life Enrichment Guide is now available at our office, at the department's regional and satellite senior centers, libraries and many other locations. Inside the guide, seniors will find information about health and wellness, educational, recreational and many other types of events, trips, classes and lectures, along with schedules and registration details. Most of these are free or at a nominal cost. This issue also highlights holiday season activities at DFSS senior centers throughout the City, and includes a special section on how to avoid Medicare and medical equipment marketing scams. The contents of the guide are also posted online.

Your Neighborhood Needs YOU! There are many opportunities to volunteer in the 47th Ward. Whether you would like to serve on a committee, organize in your community, work on a specific type of project, give an hour or two of your time or if you have an idea for an initiative, we want to hear from you. Volunteer work is excellent for resume-building, a great way to meet people and helps keeps you open to new career opportunities.
