Dear Neighbor, I am very excited to announce that the Ravenswood Station retail and Ravenswood Terrace residential projects passed the City Council's Committee on Zoning today! The next step is a full Council vote on October 31st when in addition I plan to introduce the remaining pieces of legislation required for the project. The goal is to enable these developers to break ground this November. This is a major development for our ward and my office has been working diligently over the past year on every phase of this project. The large Sears lot at Lawrence and Ravenswood has been sitting empty for decades and a number of projects have been attempted over the years. Fortunately, over this past year we were able to attract and bring on entirely new development teams; the many community meetings, emails, letters and phone calls helped to create a project that is both financially viable and highly desirable by our residents. I am looking forward to bringing you a progress report with more information next month. And, of course, I thank you all of you for being a part of this approval process and giving your feedback. Many 47th ward neighbors worked on these projects with us, making suggestions for important changes and providing invaluable feedback that ultimately led to many enhancements for both the commercial and residential pieces of this project. Thank you! Sincerely,

New Business: Bottles & Cans (4109 N. Lincoln)
|
Owners Carly and Joe Katz are so excited to be members on the Chamber of Commerce. Since beginning this (long) process over a 1 ½ ago Carly and Joe knew they wanted to be in North Center. "This is a great neighborhood and we are so pleased to have found the space that we did." Bottles and Cans is a craft beer, wine and spirits retail store; located at 4109 N Lincoln, next to Brown Trout. Their specialty product is a selection of over 1000 craft beers. With plenty of Spirits and Wines from around the globe, they are confidante that they will have something for Also, on the agenda will be events and tastings for everyone to partake. Including, this coming Trick or Treat outing hosted by the Chamber. "We will have candy for the kids and a few 'adult' treats for Mom and Dad." "We have been welcomed with open arms by the community. The owners and staff of Brown Trout have been amazing. Michael the owner of Easy Rider and The Horseshoe, stops in to check on us often. It has been nothing but positive and we look forward to meeting more of our neighbors. We hope that everyone stops in to introduce themselves." North Center has a collection of great small businesses. Bottles and Cans looks forward to helping this community grow and establish a destination for the greater Chicagoland area.

Education Update
|
Exciting happenings in our neighborhood schools. We will also have past announcements submitted by the schools on our Education Update website until after the date of the event has passed. Did you know that all of the schools in the ward have "Friends of ..." groups? Their members are folks who are parents, community members, businesses and neighbors who work, volunteer, raise funds and are generally committed to helping the schools improve. Some of these are new groups, others are decades old; they all welcome new members.

Dog Park Proposed for Horner Park
|
Many of you have asked if a dog park could be established in our ward. Due to Chicago Park District regulations none of our parks are suitable. However, a committed group of neighbors would like to create a Dog Friendly Area in Horner Park, which borders our ward on the west. This new initiative was introduced at a meeting held by the 33rd Ward at Horner Park just last week. Alderman Pawar is happy to support and partner with Alderman Mell, the 33rd Ward and the neighbors who are working to build a DFA in Horner Park. You can read the report of the meeting here.
The process of creating a DFA is long, arduous and expensive, as you can see from the Chicago Park District guidelines.

Halloween Events
| We are expecting a SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN here in the 47th Ward!
The festivities will begin on Friday at the 20th District Haunted House. Saturday Trick or Treats begin at the generous merchants on Lincoln, Rockwell, Damen and Western, Northcenter and Lincoln Square. Enjoy another Haunted House at Bethany UCC , enter your pooch in both Dog Costume Parades - Ruff Haus Pets and Winona & Ravenswood, take the family to a Halloween Extravaganza to benefit local schools at Schubas! Please be aware and extra careful of Block Party street closings over the weekend and after school on Halloween. Those blocks will be open for trick or treating, but not cars.
The City of Chicago does not designate specific times for trick-or-treating. The police advise that it is best to trick-or-treat while there still is daylight. Other safety tips include: children should wear a costume that is reflective and/or bright or carry a glow stick; children should be accompanied by an adult; If your children are trick-or-treating after dark, they should only go to houses where porch lights are on and even then, only to homes of families they know; remind your children to never enter someone's home or approach someone's car to get their treats; and finally make sure to obey all traffic signals and signs. Together we can create a safe fun Halloween for our children. Links to many events are below and you'll find more event flyers in this newsletter.

Dara Reports

At our last Gardening Workshop we learned about seed gathering and bulb planting from neighbors Julie Peterson and Nancy Benjamin. We had an almost balmy fall evening in the incredible prairie that Pete Leki, the Environmental Coordinator and his students at Waters School and neighbors have created. As the sun went down leaves on some of the plants seemed to glow in the dusk. If you have never visited this magical place, give yourself a treat.
During our next workshop we will learn all about trees from expert Jeff Brink, a Senior City Forester; bring your questions. We will also discuss the simple chores we can do to prepare for winter and put our gardens to bed. Please join us for our next workshop on November 13, 6pm at the 47th Ward Service Office 4243 N. Lincoln. Don't forget to register your corner and parkway gardens with our office, so we can help to protect them.

A Lovely Day to Pick-Up, Clean-Up & Spruce Up. "This is like a trip back through the decades" Jim remarked, as the old phones, printers, fax machines and televisions were brought to the Ward Yard on Saturday during our E-Waste Day. Weeds were wacked, pulled and sprayed throughout the ward. Leaves were raked, bagged and set out into alleys. I am certain that everyone who participated had a great time! Check out the photo below from West Ravenswood Neighbors. On behalf of the whole neighborhood, we want to thank all of you for your hard work.
"Adopt" your sewers and catch basins. Keep the tops clear of leaves and litter.
This will cut down on flooding. If the drain appears to be clogged after removing leaves from the surface, and water does not drain within 12 hours of rainfall please call our office so we can get the sewer on the schedule for cleaning. To learn more about what you can do for storm water management please click here.
