Dear Neighbor, As we progress with the city-wide budget, my office staff has been coordinating with city crews the last public infrastructure construction projects in the ward before the snow flies. Many of these projects, other than the utility work on new water, sewer and gas mains, are funded by my yearly allotment-the aldermanic "menu" fund. Here is an update on these 2012 menu projects. - 12 alleys resurfaced or reconstructed based on resident complaints
- About eight blocks of streets resurfaced or repaired based on resident complaints
- About four blocks of sidewalk repairs to support the commercial districts
- Five blocks of curb & gutter reconstruction and 10 other locations had spot repairs
- A new driveway for the Damen & Grace firehouse
- Over a dozen "State Law Stop for Pedestrians" signs and crosswalk improvements (some yet to be installed)
- Replacement of the drinking fountain in Giddings Plaza (was broken for four years)
- Additional funding for the new playgrounds designed for Filbert and Merryman parks (to match their local fundraising)
- Buffered bike lanes on Roscoe & Campbell (in coordination with the 32nd Ward who also installed these further down Roscoe)
- Funding for the Berteau Neighborhood Greenway (construction to be started in the spring)
- Funding for the Bike Share program in order to expand four additional stations in our ward. (Click Here to suggest a location)
- 46 trees to replace dead/missing ones mostly along the Western & Lincoln Avenues parkways (the Complete Streets program that allowed us to do this this didn't cover residential areas, however we are looking for ways to help contributes funds to the Bureau of Forestry to allow for additional residential plantings in 2013)
- Other miscellaneous infrastructure repairs
We are excited to move forward and work with the Ward Council on the next round of block audits. It was from these audits first performed by our 24 or so block clubs last winter/spring that we identified many of the locations for the 2012 infrastructure repairs and improvements. We will again start a list of infrastructure requests for 2013. If you have a suggestion email bill@chicago47.org. Many congratulations to Lane Tech High School for being designated by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2012. This is a very prestigious honor and wonderful achievement. Lane Tech will be presented with the National Blue Ribbon School award in a ceremony in Washington D.C. in November. Please join me in congratulating Lane Tech Principal Dignam, the LSC, and all of the staff, teachers and students. We are so very proud of your accomplishment! Many thanks to those who attended the budget town halls I convened this week. There were tough discussions, and I appreciate your insights and feedback. I will certainly bring your questions and concerns to the City Council budget briefings over the next two weeks. If you were not able to attend any of our community meetings this week, we will have a third budget briefing at our Ward Council meeting on Tuesday, October 30th, at Luther Memorial Church, 2500 W. Wilson Avenue. Please feel free to attend; all Ward Council meetings are open to the public and we hope to see you there. Also, please remember that all the City Council budget briefings are open to the public. The meetings are held in City Hall's council chambers and begin each morning at 9am and end around 5pm. Sincerely,

Education Update
|
Exciting happenings in our neighborhood schools. We will also have past announcements submitted by the schools on our Education Update website until after the date of the event has passed. Did you know that all of the schools in the ward have "Friends of ..." groups? Their members are folks who are parents, community members, businesses and neighbors who work, volunteer, raise funds and are generally committed to helping the schools improve. Some of these are new groups, others are decades old; they all welcome new members.

Many thanks to those of you who were with us at Chicago Mosaic School over the weekend. We each had a tour of this magnificent space, which includes galleries, shops, library, artist work spaces and class space. We were surprised to learn that Chicago Mosaic School is the only school of its kind in the country! There were about 36 of us who worked on the beautiful mosaic Roots of Our Community, designed by Karin Ami, Director of the school, to honor the older adults in the 47th Ward. It is truly a beautiful work of art, made more so by the many hands who contributed to its creation. Please join us for its unveiling on November 8th (see flyer above).
