Our Great Summer Continues!
summerThis summer has been a banner year for the club! Memberships and participation in our summer programs are up significantly and the energy is flowing!

Last month, our A swim team tied for first out of 27 teams in the Midlakes Swim League and our B team placed 2nd in their divison. Our diving team also won the Midlakes Diving championship. Congratulations to all our teams and coaches! Midlakes Waterpolo is now underway thru August and we are undefeated so far.

It's been a banner summer for weather, too, and we still have a few more months to enjoy it. The club is having a member celebration party on Friday evening August 16th. We'll send more information on that in the nex week.

Also, the bubble will not go back on the south pool until Sept. 28th so stick around for more warm weather swimming and tennis into early fall.

This fall we will be adding some new kids activities. They include a weekly Wednesday afternoon pool event from 1:30-3:30 starting in October and a Halloween party. And, don't forget, we have excellent year-round swim team and swim lesson programs.

Shark Swimmers Tie to Win League

sharkIn July, our A team tied with Mercerwood Shore Club to win the Midlakes Swim League championship. The league includes 27 teams overall. Last year we missed winning the Championship by only 12 points (behind Mercerwood).  Our B team also did very well placing second in the top division (Division 1) out of 6 teams. We have not won the league since 2003 and have won 18 times since the league began in 1961.

The team has continued to grow in popularity and talent over the past few years. Just 5 years ago our team was struggling and only had 180 swimmers. Last year the team had grown to 272 swimmers and this year we had over 300. Swimmers range in age from 6 to 17.

"We've been blessed with really good coaches", said swim team Board President Pat Roley. They included co-coaches Michael Patterson and Kate Shafer along with Maddie Hagen, Max Mueller, and Paloma Dinkel.

Dive Team Wins Midlakes Championships
diver

Our divers won the overall Midlakes Diving Championship held at Newport Hills last weekend. There are 5 clubs in the league. Our team had over 40 divers this year and 2 coaches.

Maraea Skeen has coached for us in the past for us and returned for this season. She attended UNLV on a diving scholarship and just finished her masters. Christina Sargent helped coach for her first year. She will be a senior at Liberty high school in the fall.

Both our coaches learned to dive in their youth at our pool. Congratulations to all the divers and coaches! We hope to see you all back here again next year!
Kuddos to Members

Thank you toTyson Dickman for repairing and repainting the guard stands!

Thank you to Chris Rowland and others who pressure washed around the club and made it look so much cleaner!

Thank you to Greg Simmons for his ongoing maintenance support at the club this summer and all  that he does for the club. Greg is currently serving on the board.

Special thanks to Dan Chase and Carl Strasser for painting the back side of the clubhouse that faces the south pool. This was on top of the larger project they coordinated in April to paint the locker rooms. Dan is on our board of trustees and Carl is a member and professional painter. Thanks so much, Dan and Carl - what a big improvement!

If you see something you want to improve or do at the club, just contact our manager, Eric Bartleson, or a member of our board. As members, we are all owners and it is great when members pitch in to improve the club!

Staff Highlight (and goodbye) - Emily Vukmir
Emily
Do you know Emily? Chances are you've spoken to her at our front desk or around the club sometime in the past 15 years. Next week Emily is leaving us to work in China. She has accepted a 1-year position to teach English to preschool children at a Montessori school in Beijing.

Emily will be greatly missed by the staff, members, and all the friends she has made at the club over the years. Like many of our pool staff, she grew up on the NHSTC swim team  and began working at the club as a lifeguard in high school. Emily started as a lifeguard for us in 1998 and started teaching swim lessons in 1999. In 2000, she became our Sr. Guard and assumed more responsibilities. She wears many hats at the club today which include training all new guards, bookkeeping, and helping coordinate all lesson and team programs. She also seamlessly managed the pool while Eric was in Europe for this past month of March.

What you might not know is that she put herself thru UW by working at the pool and earned a double major in psychology and sociology. After college, while working at the pool, she also worked full time for Americorp for 2 years doing environmental restoration. She reinstated native plants in salmon bearing streams around King County and assisted with hurricane response for a month in the gulf states during the year after Hurricane Katrina.

After that, Emily went back to the pool full time. "I just love the pool and the people," she said. "I have met some of my best friends at the pool". One of those best friends from the area moved to Beijing this year and passed out Emily's resume to some schools. She interviewed on skype and accepted the first position.

"I have always wanted to live abroad", she said. She loves traveling and has been to Peru, Tanzania and also has spent 6 months in Europe. One of her favorite things to do when she travels is to visit the local grocery stores. "They are usually much smaller and have  less selection and are more specialized than Safeway", she said. "In Peru, mattresses were sold in the grocery store!", she laughed.

Emily, we will miss your friendly face around the club but we wish you well and hope to see you back at the club in the future. Thank you for all you have done for our club!

Be sure to stop in and say goodbye to Emily. Her last day at the club is next Tuesday, August 6th.

Have you been to Bill Pace yet?

It's like having a local farmer's market every day and the prices are way better! Lucky for us, Bill Pace recently opened a produce and coffe shop in Newport Hills (in the old Hallmark store location). If you have not been in yet, August is one of the best (and most delicious) times of the year to go.

Along with a large seasonal variety of fresh & local produce at great prices, Bill carries a variety of other local products including dairy items, juices, dry beans, and a variety of delicious frozen treats including Umpqua ice creams and yogurts and the most delicious pies! Soon they will be adding local cheeses from Bow, WA.

One of my ongoing favorite items is the 2 pound container of Mercer Slough Frozen Organic Blueberries for $9.99. My family eats them daily with our morning oatmeal or granola & yogurt and in our favorite recipes.

Whenever I need a staple item or go out to shop for groceries, I stop at Bill Pace first. Then I continue on to my local grocery chain for my other food needs. My family now eats healthier and supports our local business & farm communities.

His locally sourced items are much fresher and tastier than the grocery chains because they arrive at the store a day or two after picking instead of being refrigerated for 2 weeks or more.

Bill's produce comes from 17 local farms as well as his own farm outside of Yakima. Right now his store has fresh Delp Hale peaches from his farm. Several other crops coming in over the next few months include freshly picked Bartlett pears, Alberta Peaches, Red Gold Nectarines, D'Angelo and Bosc pears, and Cameo and Fuji apples.  "If everyone in Bellevue bought a box of my pears, I'd still have some left over," Bill said.

  Pace
The coffee shop serves local Caffe D'arte coffee from Seattle (one of the best brews in the market!) and homemade cookies, cinnamon rolls and carmel walnut bars as well as other yummy bakery items made daily. The coffee shop entrance opens at 7am daily (8am on Sundays). The produce side of the store is open 9am-7pm daily.

Stop in soon & shop from the huge selection of summer produce and meet Bill, his wife Marianne, and his friendly staff - they'll give you some ideas for preparing fresh, local & healthy food.

Also, join his facebook page or visit his website for updates on fresh new produce arrivals in store.
