"Kid-ding" Around at the Lake of the Ozarks

Lake of the Ozarks, Mo. - When children ask the question "Where are we going for vacation?" the answer is easy - Central Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks.  There are plenty of kid-friendly activities that will be fun for the whole family, plus golf for dad and shopping for mom.

MAKE A SPLASH

Girl at Big Surf
Big Surf Waterpark is a family favorite for some fun in the sun.

The Lake has plenty of water fun year-round with two waterparks.  Big Surf Waterpark is an outdoor park open Memorial Day through Labor Day.  It's easy to spend a full day enjoying all the water features at this park.  Visitors can start with the Activity Pool and its lily pad bridge, then test their mettle on the Zambezi Falls, a half-pipe of rushing water three stories tall.  The Challenger Flumes are dueling 300-foot water slides, twisting and turning their way down to a catch pool.  The yellow flume is open on top; the blue flume sends you flying through the darkness.  Float slowly down the Lazy River or choose The Rapids for a white water float.  The Tropical Splash Island is perfect for smaller kids and a beach area allows for fun in the sand.  Learn more at: www.BigSurfWaterpark.com.

Timber Falls Indoor Water Park at Tan-Tar-A Resort
Timber Falls Indoor Waterpark at Tan-Tar-A Resort offers gallons of fun, rain or shine.

Regardless of when your travels bring you to the Lake, year-round waterpark fun is still on the menu.  Timber Falls is an indoor waterpark at Tan-Tar-A Resort centered on a three-story wilderness tree house.  The fun includes 600 feet of waterslides, an activity pool and a relaxing lazy river float.  The giant bucket on the tree house tips every minute, spilling 600 gallons of water on those below.  Tan-Tar-A Resort is one of the Lake area's full-service resorts, offering a bowling alley, horseback riding, putt-putt golf and other family-friendly amenities in addition to the waterpark.  There are also 27 holes of golf and a spa for grown-ups in the group.  More information is available at www.Tan-Tar-A.com.

RACK UP SOME POINTS

Miner Mike's and Buster's is an indoor family fun center that is fun for kids and brings out the kid in adults.  Miner Mike's offers fun for younger kids with 35,000 square feet of activities.  The Chuck Wagon Ferris Wheel takes riders two stories high and the Runaway Mine Train Roller Coaster flies over dips, bends and through a rock tunnel.  There is also a miner maze with tubes and tunnels and the Gold Mine Bumper Cars.  Buster's offers 12,000 square feet of high-tech fun for older kids and adults in a mining town setting.  More than 80 of the latest games and simulations let visitors race a stock car, fish for bass or fight a Galaxian battle.  See all the fun at: www.MinerMikes.com.

PLAY WHERE YOU STAY

Many Lake area resorts rent boats, tubes, skis and everything else a family needs for fun on the water.

Since the Lake of the Ozarks is one of the Midwest's premier family destinations, lodging facilities know they need to be more than just a place for kids to sleep.  Whether you choose a luxury resort like The Lodge of Four Seasons, one of the many small family-owned resorts or one of the area's beautiful campgrounds, there will be plenty of fun for the smallest members of the family.  Not just pools and playgrounds and game rooms, but also boat and personal watercraft rentals are available at many of the lodging facilities around the lake.  Parents can rent boats for everything from fishing to waterskiing and tubing; and many of the resorts will rent out all the equipment to make a trip on the water a success with all the members of the family.

THE LAKE IS NATURALLY FUN

Catch big fish and big smiles at the Lake.

Speaking of fishing, what kid doesn't like to drop a line in the water and reel in a catch?  You don't have to have a boat at the Lake of the Ozarks to fish.  There are plenty of locations around the lake to cast your line.  The Lake area has two beautiful state parks that offer fishing and much more, including swimming at sandy beaches.

Hiking at Ha Ha Tonka and Lake of the Ozarks state parks treats kids to the natural fun of this great destination.  Ha Ha Tonka features the ruins of an early 1900s castle and breathtaking views of the Lake.  Natural rock formations, wildlife and native plants are features of both parks.  Trails accommodate the needs and abilities of all members of the family, from casual walkers to serious hikers.  Learn more about these parks and their amenities at www.MOStateParks.com.

GO AHEAD AND CAVE IN

Explore one of the Lake area's many caves.

If the kids are looking for some cool fun, head underground to one (or more) of the area's caves.  Four of Missouri's 22 tour caves are in the Lake of the Ozarks area.  They offer indoor fun at a constant temperature near 60 degrees, no matter what the weather is outside.

  • Bridal Cave, Camdenton, is on the Big Niangua Arm of the Lake.  Named for a Native American legend of romance and marriage, Bridal Cave offers lighted tours on concrete walkways, featuring the Bridal Chapel.  The cave also features a gem shop and gem mining.  See more about the cave at: www.BridalCave.com.
  • Jacob's Cave, Versailles, is the largest cave in the Lake area featuring geological evidence of six ice ages and three earthquakes.  Walking tours on concrete walkways are offered from Memorial Day through Labor Day.  See more about this cave at: www.JacobsCave.com.
  • Fantasy World Caverns, Eldon, has a storied history of use as a shelter for animals and Native Americans, storage by early settlers and as a speakeasy during Prohibition.  Walking tours are available daily.  See more about the cave at: www.FantasyWorldCaverns.com.

BE FESTIVE

Bagnell Dam Duck Drop
The Great Bagnell Dam Duck Drop is a popular summer event at the Lake.

Families will enjoy the Lake of the Ozarks' festivals and activities any time of the year.  In the summer, the Great Bagnell Dam Duck Drop features family activities all structured around the main event - rubber ducks dropped from a helicopter to float down the Osage River for prizes.  In the fall, a turkey festival in Eldon and apple festivals in Versailles and Linn Creek feature parades, contests and plenty of family food and fun.  In the winter, Eagle Days in the Lake Ozark area allows kids to see eagles nesting in the bluffs around the Lake and learn more about these and other majestic birds of prey. Springtime brings Camdenton's annual Dogwood Festival, with events celebrating the beauty of Missouri's state tree.  For information about the festivals, check out the events calendar at www.FunLake.com.
