On Mondays, the younger children will make wreaths and the older children will create platters and bowls from coiled magazines.  On Tuesdays, the children will study and make monograms inspired by Albrecht Durer.  On Wednesdays, the youth will create balsa wood or colograph prints also inspired by Albrecht Durer, on Thursdays participants will create folded books sculptures inspired by Nick Georgiou.  On Fridays, children will complete and critique their work and display their work for family and friends.

Summer Art Camp 2013 is supported in part by grants from the Nebraska Arts Council /Nebraska Cultural Endowment, the United Way of Nebraska City, and the generosity of many Otoe County individuals and organizations.

What you can do:

  • Register - Download a registration form for your student and return it by 7/3/13.
  • Donate - Summer Art Camp costs about $100 per child and registration fees are just $45 per child/$80 per family.  After registration fees and  grants from the NE Arts Council and United Way, we still need local support of about $37.50 per child to provide an art camp experience for 80 local children each summer.  Many families in our community cannot afford the registration fee and need to apply for scholarships.
  • Share Art Supplies - Many recycled items will be used in the Print Rehab Camp this summer.  See the list below and contact us at 873-6343 if you have supplies to share.

Supplies needed:

  • Many, many old magazines...the more colorful the pages, the better
  • Old wrapping paper
  • Old newspaper
  • 80+ old paperback chapter books
  • Cereal boxes
  • Bobby pins
  • Old wooden children's alphabet blocks with raised surfaces, see http://www.barclaywoods.com/alphabet_blocks/Lower_Case.htm
  • Old children's picture books

KHN Art Show 'Art Made After School' Art Show at KHN Center for the Arts a Hugh Success!

A special week long exhibition was held recently at the KHN Center for the Arts. The 'Art Made After School' show highlighted the success and hard work of the middle school students that participated in the After School Clubs for both Nebraska City and Syracuse.

Beautiful and creative works of art the students made during  the Glass Club lead by Carrie Strope, Clay Club lead by Jenni Brant, and Painting and Drawing Club lead by Sara Martin where displayed. Each art club was offered for a full school quarter and students attended, created, and worked with professional artist on projects.  The exhibition was a reward for their hard work and provided and opportunity not only see their works of art displayed in a gallery but for family to enjoy too!  Students and club leaders enjoyed the chance to visit and show off their work.  A highlight for the students was an opportunity to visit with the artists in residence currently at the KHN center from as far away as Australia. They made a special effort to interact with the students about their artwork and their communities.

We like to express special appreciation to the club Leaders, parents and family, and KHN for being such great host and making it a wonderful reception and experience for the students.

The Partners for Otoe County "Exploring the Arts After School" project is funded by grants from the Nebraska Arts Council /Nebraska Cultural Endowment, The Steinhart Foundation and The Kropp Foundation.
