Greetings!

Greetings!

We're pleased to bring you our second Las Positas College Foundation e-newsletter for 2014. This quarterly update is designed to keep you connected with the College and the Foundation's shared goal of building a brighter future together. As members of our campus and regional communities, you are vital to our success.

Las Positas College serves the entire Tri-Valley region from its campus in Livermore. The College educates students for transfer to four-year universities and colleges and for technical and vocational careers, while also offering life-long learning opportunities for continuous education.

The Las Positas College Foundation works to further those goals by developing resources that support the College and, equally important, informing the regional community about the College by promoting its opportunities, resources, and benefits.

Ramona Peterson

In this edition of our newsletter, we are pleased to feature Las Positas College student Ramona Peterson. Ramona is a veteran who served in the United States Navy for over eight years. At Las Positas College, she is one example of many remarkable and deserving students who are assisted by community investors in the Tri-Valley's future.

Not only is Ramona the first member of her family to go to college, she he is a remarkably engaged student as well. She earned a Photography Certificate in 2011 with highest honors. Currently, she is working on an AS in Photography, an AA in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Humanities, and a second AA in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Language Arts. She plans to transfer to San Francisco State University to pursue her love of photography by either becoming a travel photographer or a photography teacher.

In 2011, in conjunction with the Italian Film Festival at LPC, Ramona presented her own photography exhibit. All the proceeds from the exhibit were donated to the Red Cross to help with the Tsunami Relief Fund in Japan. Also in 2011, Ramona became an international artist. Her photography was part of a conference in Santiago de Cuba.

Ramona believes that campus and community involvement are important to help develop the skills needed to build a good character. On campus, she has been a general member or officer of the AGS Honor Society, Psi Beta Honors Society, Journalism Club, Veterans First Program and Student Veterans Organization.

In the community, Ramona has been equally committed. She participated, volunteered and helped organizations such as the American Legion, Wounded Warrior Project, Honoring the Path of the Warrior, Little League, Amgen Tour, Coastal Clean-up Day, U.S.S. Arizona Presentation and a 9/11 Memorial Presentation.

Ramona Peterson feels strongly that the faculty at Las Positas College is uniquely student-focused. Among the bits of great advice that she received from the teachers at LPC was encouragement to apply for scholarships. Ramona listened, applied and was awarded several scholarships...many of them funded by the LPC Foundation. Her awards include the ASLPC Book Scholarship, Osher Scholarship, Veterans First Scholarship, Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society Achievement Scholarship, Daughters of the American Revolution Scholarship, and the Military Outstanding Officer's Association Scholarship. She says that this assistance was invaluable to her ability to attend college. The scholarship funds paid fees and helped with related expenses such as textbooks.

Ramona represents the very best spirit of LPC students. Many truly remarkable members of the student community, including Ramona, would struggle to afford school expenses were it not for the help of the LPC Foundation and its supporters.

We invite you to reach out to help deserving students at our community's college. An education is not free for any student... but each educated resident pays dividends to all Tri-Valley residents. Visit www.lpcfoundation.org and select the "Invest in LPC" tab.

Stephanie Beasly

Stephanie Beasly

From time-to-time, we feature in this newsletter one of the members of our Foundation Board of Directors. This quarter, meet Stephanie Beasly.

Stephanie joined the LPC Foundation Board in 2012. Since beginning her relatively short tenure, she has jumped right into serving the College. This year, she is the Chair for the Best of the Best Gala Committee. As the Community Relations Officer for Sandia National Laboratories in California, Stephanie oversees the lab's education outreach effort and is responsible for local industry and government relations. Joining the LPC Foundation Board of Directors was the perfect opportunity for Stephanie to marry her passion for community service and education.

Prior to her work at Sandia, Stephanie was Communications Manager for Frontier Communications' Western Region based in Elk Grove, CA. She was responsible for all public relations activities for the company's in nine states. During her career at Frontier, she helped complete an acquisition with Verizon that tripled the company's size and was the largest Wall Street deal in 2010. Stephanie has also served as the Marketing Coordinator for the Lodi-Woodbridge Winegrape Commission where she was responsible for starting the wine region's largest wine festival, ZinFest.

Stephanie Beasly's passion for education likely started before she was even born. She was raised by a family of educators who taught her to appreciate lifelong learning. Volunteering and giving back to local schools--from elementary to community college--it allows her to help students who may not have the support system at home to help them achieve their dreams of higher education.

In addition to serving on the Las Positas College Foundation Board of Directors, Stephanie is a member of the Innovation Tri-Valley Leadership Group and is a Board member of the Livermore Valley Winegrowers Foundation. Stephanie was born and raised in Oregon. She is a fourth generation Southern Oregon University alum. She holds a B.S. in Business Administration with an emphasis on Marketing. Currently, Stephanie and her husband, Jeremy, live in Mountain House where they are raising their two children, Grace (6) and Jacob (4).

We hope you've found this newsletter informative. As always, please feel free to contact the LPC Foundation at [email protected] or by phone at (925) 424-1010. All of us at Las Positas College look forward to seeing you at the Best of the Best Gala on April 26!
