 "LET'S TALK RENTAL ORDINANCE!!"
LET'S TALK RENTAL ORDINANCE!! The Rental Ordinance debacle is
shaping up to be the most divisive issue for our Paradise since the STRP! 
PROBLEM: Let's keep it simple, there are a number of folks usually "RENTERS" disturbing the tranquility of Marco Island, predominantly during the season and the trend seems to be getting worse.The actual problem is reaching the "owners" of a rental property when their tenants are breaking the rules and establishing appropriate penalties. If a tenant is unruly, loud, non-compliant, etc. a citation to the renter will probably NOT be paid and the owner does NOT get noticed of the problem.  If the penalties are NOT strong enough to get the owners attention (they make lots of rental $$$ and may not come here often, i.e. don't really care about our peace & tranquility) the problem will continue and probably get worse.
CONFUSION:  The Planning Board recommended and City Council   approved a RENTAL ORDINANCE (by a 4-3 vote) to include ONLY single family residences to be registered, inspected, etc, etc..  Two weeks later the Council reversed itself and passed a RENTAL ORDINANCE (another 4-3 vote) which included single-family AND condominiums.   THE ORDINANCE includes, registration, inspections, response times for owners and or their representatives  to be notified and correct problems. (within one hour).

RENTAL ORDINANCE REPEAL PETITION:  REALTORS, MI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & CONDO ASSOCIATIONS  believe the ordinance is an over-reach by the City Council and is not necessary as condominiums and associations like Hideaway Beach, etc. provide self policing.

BILL'S THREE CENTS!!
BILL'S THREE CENTS!!  1.) After 45 years on our Island Paradise anything that divides us is bad for Marco.  I also believe compromise is healthy for major issues AND I think it's good for us to implement major changes "incrementally" to see what works and doesn't work.  2.) As much as I hate to disagree with my good friend Joe Batte.  The City Charter allows for it's residents to Petition it's government for relief, in this case an Ordinance passed by council.  Until and unless the Charter is changed the residents have every right to Petition for lawful changes via referendum.
BOTTOM LINE:
 Let's have a full and thoughtful discussion on this and every difficult issue BUT lets refrain from harmful and destructive dialogue that may sprinter our friendships and our community!
