A MESSAGE FROM RABBI SILVER
|
Dear Friends,
I sat reading the paper last week, and I cried.
On January 27, the world marked the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz with a massive ceremony held at the notorious camp. Kings and presidents from all of Europe, together with 300 frail survivors, gathered in a huge tent to observe what many believe will be the final large gathering of survivors who are now mostly in their 80s and 90s.
I was born seven years after the war ended. My father, Albert, who was drafted in 1940, served in the US infantry for almost five years and in France for 14 months. When he suffered his first heart attack the trench foot that bedeviled him as a much younger man returned. It reminded me that wounds, both physical and spiritual, may heal but do not disappear entirely. Their effects linger longer than a lifetime, sometimes for many generations.
I cried last week while I read my newspaper because, for me, and most of you, too, the horror of the last century is personal, even though I didn't not lose any "close" relatives in the Shoah. We are all deeply connected to each other. History and destiny are part of every Jewish person's psychological DNA. When we begin to lose that sense of connection, we lose part of who we are, and I believe we are spiritually impoverished by that loss of identity.
I see my task, and that of the synagogue, as helping to strengthen and maintain our community connection. I encourage each of you to find a piece of our synagogue (or create your own) that speaks to you and commit to becoming involved. We are lucky enough to have a member of our community serve as volunteer coordinator. I encourage you to contact Jon Johnson at [email protected] to find your niche and, together, we will strengthen our community. You will be spiritually enriched and greatly rewarded, as I have been, for all your efforts on behalf of the Jewish people.
I am.

Monday, February 9 -- 11:00am
"The Joy of Klezmer" with Howard Korman

Wednesday, February 11 -- 11:00am
"Our Rabbi Abraham: Lincoln & the Jews" with Rabbi Silver
Over the course of American history, Jews have held many American leaders in high esteem, but they maintain a unique emotional bond with Abraham Lincoln. From the time of his presidency to the present day, American Jews have persistently viewed Lincoln as one of their own, casting him as a Jewish sojourner and, in certain respects, a Jewish role model.
For Most Programs: Lunch will be served. $12 members/$15 guests
Matinee Movies follow most programs.

TIKKUN OLAM SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE
The Tikkun Olam Social Action Committee is organizing a book drive for one of the Michael Mitzvah Day projects. We are collecting books, CDs, DVDs and LP records in good condition for Re-Book It. Re-Book It finds the best possible home for donated books, CDs, DVDs and LPs. Some go to local charities like Friends of the Library, homeless shelters, hospitals or schools.
A few are sold to readers, collectors or students, raising funds for the continuation of the program and for partner charities. Books that they can't find a home for are recycled, saving trees. No book is ever thrown away. To learn more click HERE .

DON'T MISS IT!
The weekend is filled with summer camp activities for both children and for grown ups, separately and together. Together, we make challah, go on a scavenger hunt, tie dye T-shirts and have a Family Talent Show. Grownups made mojitos in the garden with Bill last year. The kids sleep in cabins with counselors, grown ups sleep in motel-like housing (children can also opt to sleep with parents/grandparents). It's a wonderful opportunity to spend time with your family and get to know the Temple Menorah community.
