MESSAGE FROM MICKEY SEIGEL, MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR
|
Dear Temple Menorah Members and Friends,
We hope that you are enjoying a wonderful Holiday Season.
The approaching New Year means that tax time is just around the corner. Please consider pre-paying some or all of your Temple dues in December so that they count for the 2014 tax-year. Just be sure that your payment reaches the office by Tuesday, December 30, so we can process it by the 31st.
And, you could make or increase your pledge to the Bernie Spanier Memorial L'Atidenu Fund to help us "Raise the Roof." If you haven't, please join us by adding a donation to your next payment so we can assure our Temple Menorah Community's future. We want to thank everyone who has helped make the campaign a success.
If you want us to process your next automatic payment in December instead of January so that tax-deductible items will count in 2014, just call us or send an e-mail to Accounting@TempleMenorah.org by December 30. Be sure to tell us if you want us to take more than the scheduled amount so that can count as well.
Thank you for supporting your Temple Menorah Community.
L'Shalom,
Mickey Seigel, Membership Director

Monday, January 5 - 11:00am
"Solving Psychological Mysteries" with Jim Heubach
"Why Do We Dream?": Ponder possible scientific explanations behind dreaming. One theory holds that dreams are our mind's efforts to make sense of random activity in the brain. Another theory suggests that dreams help us solve problems that are bothering us. Yet another theory poses that dreams merely store memories from the previous day. Our matinee movie will be "Spellbound" with Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck.
Wednesday, January 7 - 11:00am
Hands-on-Art with Miriam Nash: "Matisse: Drawing With Scissors"
" Moving into a period of selfless invention, Matisse, the Master of Color, comes nearest to abstraction in his later years in sculpting with paper. Too weak to stand at an easel, he would cut shapes from paper with scissors. Understanding how colors and shapes which are interrelated work, Matisse created brilliant works of Art that come to life. Our matinee movie will be the Academy Award winning "Midnight in Paris".
Monday, January 12 - 11:00am "50 Years of Jewish-Catholic Relations: Pluses and Minuses" with Rabbi Steven Silver and Father Alexei Smith, Archdiocese of Los Angeles, at St. John Fisher Catholic Church We will join Rabbi at the St. John Fisher Luncheon Series for this panel. Please RSVP by January 7th so we can let the Church know to order lunch for you. (There will be no program held at Temple Menorah)
Wednesday, January 14 - 11:00am "Life Changing Events of 1968" - a new interactive series with John Powers Powerful events in Memphis, Los Angeles, Chicago and Mexico Cityabruptly changed and shaped the social and political landscape for decades to come. Through performance and visual imagery, each session will focus on a city. "Mexico City" dramatizes the politics and violence that colored the Games of the XIX Olympiad. In the aftermath of the assassinations of two major statesmen, unconventional leaders call for change in a nation caught in an unpopular war with urgent domestic needs. Ittraces the emotional journey of world-class sprinter Tommie Smith from when he first comes to national prominence on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine to the silent but powerful gesture on the victory pedestal in Aztec Stadium. The dramatization also examines the student protests and massacre of innocents in the Plaza of Three Cultures days prior to Opening Ceremony. . Our matinee movie will be "I Am Ali."
For Most Programs: Lunch will be served. $12 members/$15 guests - Matinee Movies follow most programs.
For more information on the Rosenberg Cultural Center or to RSVP, please contact Mickey Seigel at (310) 316-8444, ext. 125, or email him at mseigel@templemenorah.org.

TIKKUN OLAM SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE
The Tikkun Olam Social Action Committee is organizing a book drive for one of the Michael Mitzvah Day projects. We are collecting books, CDs, DVDs and LP records in good condition for Re-Book It. Re-Book It finds the best possible home for donated books, CDs, DVDs and LPs. Some go to local charities like Friends of the Library, homeless shelters, hospitals or schools.
A few are sold to readers, collectors or students, raising funds for the continuation of the program and for partner charities. Books that they can't find a home for are recycled, saving trees. No book is ever thrown away. To learn more click HERE .

CONGREGATIONAL RETREAT & FAMILY CAMP

DON'T MISS IT!
The weekend is filled with summer camp activities for both children and for grown ups, separately and together. Together, we make challah, go on a scavenger hunt, tie dye T-shirts and have a Family Talent Show. Grownups made mojitos in the garden with Bill last year. The kids sleep in cabins with counselors, grown ups sleep in motel-like housing (children can also opt to sleep with parents/grandparents). It's a wonderful opportunity to spend time with your family and get to know the Temple Menorah community.

The Jewish Innovation
We launched High Five Basketball to provide a stimulating and accepting environment for youth with autism. Through our mission "Friendship, Focus, Fitness, Fairness & Fun", we provide a basketball league for children 6-16 years old with autism in order to give them athletic opportunities, social interactions and friendships, an accepting environment to just simply have fun, and that fundamental sense of belonging one gets from being on a team.
