U. S. Chamber Survey: Small Businesses Most Concerned About Healthcare Reform
| | |
For the first time in two years, healthcare reform tops economic uncertainty as small business owners' biggest concern, according to a US Chamber of Commerce survey. Healthcare reform now tops economic uncertainty as the biggest concern for small businesses, according to the quarterly survey. More than 75% "of the 1,332 small business owners/executives surveyed by Harris Interactive said healthcare reform will make insurance coverage for their employees more expensive," and more than 70% "said the law makes it harder for them to hire more employees." U.S.Chamber chief economist Martin Regalia said, "In today's economy, we need policies that will breed confidence and encourage small businesses to expand, not cut back staff and employees' hours." U. S. Chamber Survey: Small Businesses' Take on Tax Reform
| | |
The U.S. Chamber released the results of the Small Business Outlook survey for the first quarter of 2013, and small businesses had a lot to say about taxes and our economy.
Small business overwhelmingly support fundamental tax reform, specifically making the code simpler to navigate, and 76% of small businesses surveyed are organized as pass-through entities, which pay taxes on business income at the individual tax rate. Here's what else they had to say:
- 79% of small businesses support comprehensive tax reform
- 52% believe the tax code needs to be less complex
- 84% say regulations, restrictions, and taxes negative impact their ability to do business
America's ability to compete economically with the rest of the world is directly tied to the tax and regulatory climate here at home. When businesses are over-burdened with taxes and tied up in red tape, the real cost is in the jobs that aren't created, and the hires that are never made. That's why 20 million Americans are looking for jobs now, and another 2.5 million have given up entirely. As the U. S. Chamber's Chief Economist Dr. Martin Regalia said:
"Though the general trends of the economy seem to be improving, a closer look shows full time employment dropping, and Washington needs to enact policies that will breed confidence and encourage small businesses to expand, instead of cutting back staff and employees' hours."
If our small businesses can't grow and hire under current policy, what can we expect for the future state of our economy? You can read the full survey results here, and we'd love to hear what you think.
