Virginia Museum of Transportation on its way with its
FIRE UP 611! Campaign
Since the launch of the Fire Up 611! Campaign on June 28, fans from around the world have responded! So far, donations have come from 10 countries. In the US, fans from 42 states have donated to bring the 611 back to excursion service. New pledges come in everyday -- but we still need your help to meet our goal!
The Class J 611 has been invited to participate in Norfolk Southern's 21st Century Steam Program. This exciting program provides steam rail excursions throughout Norfolk Southern's operating territory.
To participate in the program in 2014, the Museum needs to raise $3.5 million by October 31, 2013. See FIREUP611.org for more details about the campaign. Please consider making a donation online or mail your donation to Fire Up 611! Virginia Museum of Transportation, 303 Norfolk Avenue SW, Roanoke, VA 24016. Class J 611 artifacts from private collections are on sale on eBay with all proceeds to benefit the Fire Up 611! Campaign.

Queen of the Fleet
Painting by artist Joseph Palotas
This beautiful painting of Norfolk and Western's J Class 611 captures all the steel, guts and glory that earned her the title: Queen of the Fleet.
The original painting, done by artist Joseph Palotas, is now offered as an 11x14 cotton linen stretched canvas Giclee. The image continues and wraps around all four edges.

From our Executive Director
Our Summer Blast is leading
into a Fall of Fun!
We're having a wonderful summer. Our Wings & Wheels Summer Camp was a huge hit with the kids and they got behind-the-scenes tours of the airport, a car dealership and the railroad. They also learned model railroading, talked to real life pilots and learned about cars, trucks, airplanes and trains. We launched our Fire Up 611! Campaign at the end of June, and we're gearing up for a busy Fall season!
Mark your calendars for Advance Auto Parts Safety Day on Saturday, August 17; Grandparents' Weekend on Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8; and our annual (and popular) Candy Cane Express on December 7 and December 8.
Come see us! We're having a great time!

Roanoke Valley Garden Club
adds special touches to the Railyard
Our magnificent steam locomotives aren't the only beauties in our Railyard. Every spring, the Garden Club of the Roanoke Valley works their magic by planting beautiful flowers throughout our Railyard. Thank you to the Club for making our Railyard bloom all summer! |

Roanoke Valley Model Engineers Club
adds classroom space
The Roanoke Valley Model Engineers Club added a much needed classroom to their space in the basement of the VMT. Every Tuesday evening, model railroaders young and old gather at the VMT to build models and create model railroad displays. In addition to the annual Model Railroad Day, the Club displays their work during special events at the VMT.
The classroom will be used to hold workshops and how-to seminars for newcomers and pros. If you'd like to join the Club, please join them on 6:30 pm on Tuesday evenings at the VMT!
The entrance to the club's space is at the back of the Museum just off the Rail Walk and around the corner from the Jupiter Rocket.
