Happy Summer!

I hope you had a safe and wonderful July 4th celebration.  Wish we didn't have to say the word safe so often.

I am happy to report that Foundations of Interior Design, 3rd eddue out early 2017 has moved on to its next phase of production. All is on schedule!

I just finished another 5-part F.I.T. Hot Topics "Motifs" program.  Later this month I will start the first  NYU High School Academy Interior Design Program NYU asked me to develop. So much for the lazy, hazy days of summer.  All is good.

A Tale of Tiles

I live in what may be described as the Tile District in Manhattan, or should I say in the middle of tile neighborhoods?  Even at my pace, within 20 minutes I can tread on the sidewalks of Gramercy Park, Flatiron, NOMAD, and Chelsea and hit dozens of tile showrooms, both trade and retail.

Tiles
...made of any number of materials, such as stone (e.g. marble and granite), ceramic, porcelain, or glass, are usually rectilinear in shape, and cut into standard sizes.
(Resilient and soft tiles, not the subject of this article, may include leather, vinyl, rubber, linoleum, carpet, etc.)

 Mosaic
... smaller units of tiles are often hand-set like a jigsaw puzzle, or more uniformly machine-cut and arranged in sheets.

Picassiette
...loosely translated from French meaning stolen pottery, is a decorative application of tiling of usually shards of porcelain often to small projects such as frames and to layer furniture but also to larger projects, e.g. Gaudi's Guell Park, Barcelona.

Tiles have history and stories.  Here are just a few.

I have my own Picassiette Retirement Project awaiting...pieces of precious porcelain, some sadly resulting from my own clumsiness; others "as is" from auction lots. They are all now safe from further damage in a carton, waiting to be fused into a glorious (and sustainable) masterpiece. Something to dream about.

Take in the beauty, even in the smallest. imperfect pieces of the whole.

All the best,
Susan
