Block 1 Updates and Announcements
Foundations July 1- July 27
We look forward to welcoming our new residents to the floors throughout Block 1! We will be helping them to set a Foundation for their residency training. Thanks to all the senior residents and faculty who will make their experience outstanding. The new residents will be spending concentrated time on the FMIS and MCH services as well as in their health centers. Residents will also be visiting the main outpatient practices that admit to our services for the annual Foundations Swing.
E*Value
Thanks to the leadership of Dr. Sherrilyn Sethi, our evaluation system is undergoing a major upgrade. The new resident evaluations will focus on the development of competency through milestone assessment. Drs. Sethi and Potts will be arranging multiple opportunities for faculty development regarding the new system. More to follow.
ALSO (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics)
A reminder that this year's ALSO course will take place in Rhode Island on August 15-16 at: Memorial Hospital of RI, 111 Brewster Street, Pawtucket, RI 02860. For more details and lodging options, please contact IMReis@carene.org. Books and CD's will be provided in the coming weeks.
New WFMR Smartphone App!
WFMR is excited to pilot a new smartphone app that will be customized for our program! We are working in conjunction with Unbound Medicine (the company behind the 5 Minute Clinical Consult app) to launch this new product later in July.
The newest INTERN SURVIVAL GUIDE and SECOND YEAR SURVIVAL GUIDE will be the first residency materials to be mobilized as an app. Stacy Potts, Michael Smith, and Len Levin are working closely with our PGY-2 resident editors (Joanne Dannenhoffer of Barre; Allison Ledoux of FHCW and Jeffrey Wacks of Hahnemann) to get this project ready before Block 2 begins. Our other PGY-2 residents and our chief residents have begun revising content for their respective guides.
We anticipate many more resources will be uploaded to this platform over the coming year. We are pleased to be the first residency program to customize an app through Unbound Medicine and plan to bring the Fitchburg residency into the fold over the coming months as well. Stay tuned!
Schedules
Rotations are being modified to include health centers on set days whenever possible. Goals of our scheduling process are to ensure availability, continuity, team based care, patient access and education. Because we are implementing /changing our templated schedules frequently based upon which resident is on and their set HC days, residents should email their preceptors whenever possible to remind them they are coming to their clinic ahead of time, copy their office personnel as well and ask for special instructions, etc. For your reference, please see the list below of 2014-15 Master Schedule Block Dates:

Hospital Medicine Updates (from Patricia Seymour, MD)
There are now TWO intern pagers: 4061 and 4064 (one for each resident team). These pagers stay with the team (if the intern goes to clinic the resident takes the team pager.
A reminder to overnight teams to ASSIGN patients at the time of admission to the correct daytime team (4061 OR 4064.)
The Night resident/intern is now also responsible for printing up the signout list and writing in the team coverage (either 4061 or 4064 with the last names of the intern and resident for the day) for the SOUTH SIX resident patients and then giving this document to the overnight charge nurse. FYI: the nursing staff is using this document to practice setting up consistent nurse-resident teams.
DO NOT cohort new admissions in the ED (i.e. do three, hold the orders and talk to the attending all at once). It causes some patient flow problems in the ER. Either talk to the attending after each admission OR turn in your orders as you go then present all at once to the attending and adjust orders thereafter as needed. Welcome, New Sports Medicine Fellows!
As the new academic year begins, the Sports Medicine Fellowship, previously administered through the Fitchburg residency, has moved to WFMR! Tamara Cullen will now be administering the Fellowship, working closely with Fellowship Director Herb Stevenson, MD.
Welcome to our two new Fellows for 2014-15:
Nathan Cardoos, MD is a recent graduate of the Tufts Family Medicine Residency Program. Nathan grew up in Littleton, Massachusetts where he was an avid soccer player, graduated from Williams College and went on to complete his Medical School training at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.
Tara Futrell. MD is a graduate of BayState Med-Peds Residency in 2006 and has been practicing primary care in Greenfield, MA for 7 years. Tara is a graduate of University of Texas Medical School at Houston and was a collegiate track athlete.
It was great to meet many of our new residents at Sunday's annual Welcome BBQ at the Ecotarium!
