New Global Health Track Blogs
Olga Valdman
, MD and Mike Smith would like to congratulate and thank three of the Global Health Track residents who have volunteered to blog about their Winter 2013 experiences during their respective trips to Nicaragua. Feel free to check out th
e
PGY-1 blog by Noah Rosenberg, MD of Barre; the PGY-2 blog by Fitchburg resident Stephanie Muriglan, MD and the PGY-3 blog by Fitchburg resident Elliot Schaeffer, DO.

It should also be noted that both Stephanie and Elliot have blogged each year they have been in the Track. These efforts by our residents have been instrumental in providing our applicants with a wonderful close-up look at the opportunities offered by the Track.

ResidencyResidency Retreat 2013

Our annual residency retreat took place on February 12 at the Petersham Curling Club to complement this year's theme of wilderness medicine. The morning agenda focused on a Cascade Survival exercise and a casting and splinting workshop led by our two Sports Medicine fellows Kylee Eagles, DO and Lauren Fralich, MD.

Our residents also elected their new chiefs for 2013-2014. Here they are!

Christopher Chang, MD is a 2011 graduate of University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and was raised in Wisconsin. He graduated summa cum laude from Case Western Reserve University in 2007 with a BA in Anthropology and Psychology and a BS in Biology. Chris was a co-leader of his school's FMIG chapter and enjoys juggling and travel. He is also a member of our residency's Global Health Track.

Monica Agarwal, MD
is a 2011 graduate of Saint George's University. She graduated from the University of Ottawa in 2000 with her BS in Biology. A Canadian native, she also earned her MHS from Johns Hopkins University in 2002. Monica worked as a nutrition consultant and as a research associate prior to medical school. Her personal interests include running and Indian classical dance. Monica is also a member of our residency's Global Health Track.

Bronwyn Sing, DO
graduated in 2011 from Western University of Health Sciences in California. She earned her BS in Health Systems Administration in 2004 as well as her MS in Physiology from Georgetown University in 2006. Bronwyn has a strong interest in health care delivery and access. Her personal interests include running, hiking and snowboarding.

Thank you to our outgoing chiefs Marco Cornelio, MD (Barre); Shaun Farraher, MD (FHCW) and Kim Bombaci, MD (Hahnemann) for a job well done this past year!

After didactics and lunch, the afternoon included curling lessons and games, as well as sledding and snowshoeing. As it happened, the local TV show Chronicle was on hand profiling the town of Petersham and stopped off at the curling club. Watch the video clip!

JanuaryJanuary Resident of the Month
         Marcy Boucher, MD, PGY-3 (Barre)

Marcy Boucher, MD, graduated in 2011 from UMass Medical School and earned her BS in Biochemistry from Simmons College in 2006. Raised in Tyngsboro, MA, Marcy served as a co-coordinator of the UMass FMIG and as a Committee member for the MA Medical Society. Her personal interests include skiing and golfing.

From our residents: "I would like to nominate Marcy for January because she did a great job with
resident recruitment and always seems to bring a positive outlook to the health center."

Dr. Seymour:
"Marcy is fabulous...she has fun while working but is a firecracker of efficiency and wit."

Dr. Stenger: "Marcy exemplifies the spirit of family medicine, being able to deftly blend thoughtful medical evaluation and management with real caring. And she keeps a positive attitude with her coworkers!"

Dr. Earls: "Marcy is a great choice. She is a
great team player, very dedicated to her patients and passionate about family medicine and especially maternal child health. She takes initiative and contributes to the overall mission of BFHC."
     FebruaryFebruary Resident of the Month
 Navid Roder, MD, PGY-3

Navid Roder, MD earned his medical degree from Universitat Basel in Switzerland in 2009 and his BS in Biology in 2002 from the College of St. Michel, also in Switzerland. Navid spent extensive time on a medical mission in Haiti in 2010. He was born in the US and enjoys jazz piano and guitar.

From our residents:
"I want to nominate Navid for January. I've been impressed by Navid's work ethic and dedication to teaching in the past, but it really shined in January. I would want him on my team any day... in America, or Switzerland, or Haiti or wherever."

"I would like to nominate Navid for February because he's a strong leader, and I look forward to working with and learning from him on FMIS in March."

Dr. Carter: "Navid is a delight to teach. He is extraordinarily conscientious and does whatever it takes to ensure the best care for his patients."

Dr. Sacra: "Navid's intellectual curiosity is a great asset to any academic undertaking!"

Dr. Seymour: "Working with Navid is just plain fun! He's energetic and pathologically engaged in every conversation and detail regarding the development of a patient's plan of care.  I love to hear him speak with other services or see him coordinate an urgent intervention because he speaks with good natured confidence but always gets his patients what they need. In didactic sessions he's challenging which really keeps me on my toes."
