Canine Guardians for Life:
WE LOVE OUR DOGS!

  Happy Valentine's Day!

February 2014

FEBRUARY is Doggie Dental Month! A dog's teeth are essential to helping him/her eat properly so s/he can maintain good health. Just like in humans, dental problems are painful and dangerous. Many people think that mouth care in dogs is unnecessary; after all wild dogs don't get their teeth cleaned. What they forget is that a wild dog's life is a good deal shorter than that of our canine companions. Loss of teeth or a painful mouth will shorten the life of any wild animal. No longer able to eat properly and defend themselves makes them easier prey for their enemies. Gum disease caused by bacteria can lead to heart, lung, and liver problems. Wild animals have no loving human companion to protect them from these difficulties

Our beloved dogs, however, have access to dental care that will help them live longer, healthier lives. Your veterinarian has many tools, including regular cleaning, water additives, dental food and chews, etc. Regular teeth brushing, which may sound strange to some, is a great idea and there are special brushes and toothpastes designed for dogs. Not all dogs will cooperate with daily brushing, but if you can get your dog to tolerate the routine, your veterinary dental bills are likely to be lower.

Whatever routine you follow, be sure to consider your dog's teeth and have your veterinarian advise you on the best way to ensure a healthy mouth for your dog.

Lucy

This little doll is a real sweetie. Not your typically hyper Jack Russell mix, she loves people and mostly wants to be a lap dog. Not a barker, housebroken, gets along with dogs, about 2-years-old and 12 pounds, Lucy will make a great family addition. Read more about her and you will want to take this baby home!

Mikey
MIKEY

Mikey is a little charmer! At about 8-10 years of age, he sure doesn't act it -- he loves to play with other dogs and has real "personality." Mikey does have limited vision due to cataracts, but his ability to love knows no limits at all. Get to know this adorable poodle and you will fall in love!

Gus
Gus was adopted by Melanie Haskell of NH.

Melanie writes: "Our Gus. Look how handsome he is.  I took these shots last night while we all hung out on the couch; he is sitting on me. Thank you for sending him to us. We are in love. His favorite person in the world is definitely my daughter, Annabella (she is 8 now).

Bear

Bear was adopted by Sherry Brown of Ma.

Sherry writes: "I absolutely love every inch of this little girl!! She is incredibly bonded with Murphy and I often find myself singing the theme song to the old show, "the courtship of Eddie's Father"... the lyrics go like this... "Let me tell you about my best friend"!

You have no idea how she melts my heart when she gets excited to see me... She spins in circles and holds her tail high, her whole back end wags!!! I especially love it when she holds her adorable ears up, cocks her head to the side and her eyes even smile!!!"

They write:
"Madison is doing great and loving the cold weather and snow. She continues to be such an incredible little dog and we are continually amazed with her progress and trust she has built with us. We love her so much! Nothing slows this little girl down - she is pure energy and abounding joy. She is also the perfect little snuggle bug and loves to plop down next to you on the sofa or in bed. I can't thank you enough for bringing her into our life. Keep on rescuing!!"

Morty

Morty (shown here on the right with friend Edwina) was adopted by Elizabeth Hoffman of VT.

She writes: "
He's such a great dog, so funny and happy and lovable, I can hardly express how glad I am to have him.  He is just absolutely the perfect dog for us.  He became attached to me very quickly and really is a velcro dog!

So thank you again for everything.  I keep thinking of how close he came to being euthanized at the shelter and how grateful I am to you for saving him -- and to Val [foster mom] for taking such good care of him for so many months."

Dory
Dory was adopted by Diane Burcz of MA.

She writes: "I can't believe that it has been a year since Dory joined our family. I wanted to let you know that she is doing well. She fits in perfectly and has finally gotten Sydney - our 11 year old Brittany - to play. It is so much fun to watch the dogs run around together in the back yard. Dory runs out of the door into the yard like a horse leaving the starting gate - we can't believe how fast her little legs can carry her.

The photo shows my son, Patrick, drying Dory after a bath - she loves the yard and the mud! Of course, she is also happy to cuddle next to us on the couch. Thank you so much for introducing us to Dory. We wanted to let you know she is doing well."

Pixie
Pixie was adopted by Jayson Montebianchi of MA.

Jayson writes: "Hi there just wanted to follow up on Pixie.  All is going well, she is enjoying every moment of being spoiled -- From going to the groomers to rides in the cars, to the beach meeting kids and other doggie friends.  Loves the snow, though would like it to be slightly less deep, so that she could go to her favorite places in the woods.

Here are a couple of pictures, One of them is her enjoying life at the lake, and the other shows her a bit unhappy that she could not find the woods.  Hope all is all with you and that you have a Happy New Year.
