Canine Guardians for Life:

We Love Our Dogs

June 2013

Planning a summer vacation with your dog?
Dogs love to be with their human companions, so summer travel can be a fun adventure for everyone. There are just a few tricks to planning a successful outing.

Being prepared is the key. Bring plenty of food and water along and don't forget the collapsible bowls for easy access. A dog harness/seat belt is a must for road travel.  Make sure your dog is secure in the car and not roaming free between back and front seats. Bring a list of current vaccinations and a current photo of your dog in the event s/he gets loose. A collar with id tags and a leash will make walking your dog in new places easier and less worrisome. A microchip is a great idea for your dog whether you are traveling or not, but on the road, it can be a lifesaver helping your dog get home no matter how far s/he roams.

If you are planning a long trip requiring overnight accommodations, be sure to check hotels out before you begin your journey. Many hotels accept dogs these days, but many don't. Knowing where you will be staying ahead of time will make travel much more relaxing for both you and your dog. If your dog is on any medications, bring enough with you to last a few extra days along with a copy of the prescription.

Make sure you stop often to offer your dog food and water and a chance to relieve him/herself. And don't forget the poop bags! Favorite toys and treats should also be packed. So, go ahead and take that vacation and bring your dogs along. After all, they're part of the family!

SOME OF OUR ADOPTABLES

Weighing in at  21-pounds, Morty is good on leash, isn't a barker, is housebroken in his current situation, and gets along with all people, dogs, and cats. He is about 7-8 years old, relaxed, and smart. He knows sit, come, and stay and is ready to learn more. This precious boy would prefer a female household and would make a loving friend.

STEVIE

Stevie is 2-3 years old and is blind in his right eye from an early injury. Stevie is very social and sweet, good with dogs, cats, and especially people! He just wants to be part of your family!  At only 8 pounds, this loving little boy would make a great family companion. Ideally, there would be another small-medium sized dog to play with!

Jenness is a gorgeous, energetic mixed breed weighing 35-pounds and is about two-years-old. She's great with other dogs (but not cats), loves to play, and is a very athletic and smart girl who would excel at agility, hiking, etc. A real beauty, Jenness will offer some lucky family a loving companion.

She is still in WV and if you would like to foster her and help us bring her north, please complete a foster application.

HAPPY ENDINGS!
Madison

MADISON is our most recent adoption, and her new mom is Diane Trovato of NH.

Diane write: "Just wanted to let you know Maddie is settling in quite well and we are just in love with her. She's just pure happiness abounding...and she just jumped up on the sofa next to me as I typed that. She is bringing a great deal of joy back into our household. Thank you for finding her, caring for her and helping her find her way to us. She is one special little girl."

Editor's Note: We knew she was special and were happy to find special people to share her life!

Tex

TEX was adopted by Stephanie Koetzle of ME.

He's shown here babysitting his little brother.

Editor's note: Maybe Tex could hire out as a babysitter. He works for dog biscuits!

Cookie

When our board member Sue Wrightsman lost her beloved Luna, she was heartbroken. When she was ready, she decided to help foster dogs for us and Cookie entered her life. It didn't take long for the two of them to fall in love.

Today Cookie and Sue enjoy spending time together playing and snuggling -- a perfect match!
Bonnie

BONNIE, a 2006 Memphis rescue pup,  has been living the good life in Milan, Italy with her  special mom, Tina Vigano.  We get to visit with her each year.
Zoey

ZOEY was adopted way back in 2005 by Sarah Copplestone of NH.

Raven

RAVEN was adopted in July 2012 by Heidi Hansen of ME.

Heidi wrote us a long note describing the joys of sharing life with Raven, which we've abbreviated here: "We've tightly bonded, and she's the sweetest, happiest dog.  Most afternoons, weather providing, she runs like the wind at our 10 acre dog park at Ft. Williams.  The other dog guardians there love her, as her border collie herding instincts get everyone running! Her fav trick there is to steal a fetch ball and have the dogs chase her.

Most of all, Raven has been a great companion. So loving, not needy, so very serene at home, fun, and to my surprise, a good discriminating watch dog. I hope you are well and continuing the great work.  I love reading your newsletter about the dogs you've rescued and placed in such wonderful homes. It's all about love."

Apple

APPLE was adopted by our good friend and board member Jill Belben of NH.

Editor's Note: A nice touch of winter for the hot summer weather!
Mason

MASON was adopted by the Schwartz family of NH.

They write: "Here is Mason now. He is such a love, just an all around good boy. We love him very much and thank you for saving him."

Ringo

We recently bumped into RINGO with his parents, Steve & Laura Morse, outside of our local post office.    They adopted RINGO two years ago.  We love seeing our adoptees around town!

Callie

CALLIE was adopted by Maya Pettit-Scott in 2011.

Sweet Callie was one of our Texas rescues and is loving her New England life!
Petey

PETEY (on his Dad's lap) waited a long time for his forever home, but is loving life with the Edwin family in Maine.  His furbrother looking out the window is TRAE, a 2006 CGL adoptee.

They write: "We fall more and more in love with him (Petey) each day. Love, love, love him!"

Kenzi

KENZI went home with Barbara and Peter Lecuyer, and is loving life in Vermont!
