Mightier Than the Sword:The Clifton Chronicles Book 5
by Jeffrey Archer
Archer brings his fans an "explosive" opening in the continuation of his bestselling Clifton Chronicles saga.  Not to give too much away, the author has Harry Clifton visiting his publisher in New York and launching a campaign to release a Russian author imprisoned in Siberia for writing a book about what it was like to work for Stalin.  Meanwhile, Harry's wife, Emma, chairman of Barrington Shipping, is facing some of her board members wanting her to resign.  Giles Barrington , a member of Parliment, finds his political career and marriage in jeopardy, while Harry's son Sebastian may have taken his ambitions too far, resulting in his personal life crumbling around him.  Archer's compelling new book has all the twists and turns his fans have come to expect as  the story continues with the Clifton and Barrington families into the 1970s.  This author is an outstanding storyteller who is capable of always making his readers wonder intensely what will happen next with his cliff-hanger endings.  The future Book 6 in Archer's saga of these British families isn't due out until February next year, so I'll just have to be patient to see how the series ends.  A highly recommended suspense series beginning with Book 1, Only Time Will Tell.  (St. Martin's, $15.99).

Moriarty
by Anthony Horowitz
When Horowitz was officially appointed by the Conan Doyle estate in 2011 to "resurrect" Sherlock Holmes, he brought readers the bestselling thriller The House of Silk.  Now in paperback Moriarty, the author plunges readers back into the complex world of Holmes and Professor James Moriarty, the "Napoleon of crime", to answer the question that has been asked for over one hundred years:  What really happened when Holmes and his arch-enemy tussled above the Swiss Reichenbach Falls?  Days following their waterfall encounter, Frederick Chase, a Pinkerton detective agent, and London's Scotland Yard inspector Athelney Jones team up to stop a criminal mastermind who claims he is Moriarty's successor.  As the two collaborate in their search for a depraved mastermind, all things are not what they seem.  This is an energized tale with foot chases through London, clever disguises, and everything  Sherlock Holmes legend readers could imagine.  Horowitz resurrects Doyle's originals while bringing his own twisty style into his clever fresh look to please the Sherlock fans.  Thrilling and compelling with a stunning twist.  (Harper, $15.99)

Gutenberg's Apprentice
by Alix Christie
In this masterpiece of history fictionalized, the author asks the question:  Who is Johann Gutenberg?  Her answer is skillfully brought to bear in this well-researched novel.  The invention of the printing press was not brought about by just one man.  In the mid-fifteenth century, during the warring between the church and the guilds, Gutenberg's ambitious vision was to "reproduce" the Bible in numbers.  But was it such a monumental task he could not achieve?  Certainly not alone and definitely not without financial backing.  In this story of invention, intrigue, and betrayal, the reader will find it rich in historical detail as it is told through the lives of the three men who made their daring venture possible: copies of the Holy Bible.  Highly recommended.(Harper, $18.00).

House of Thieves
by Charles Belfoure
This is a story of choices proving there is no honor among thieves...or gentlemen, it seems.  House of Thieves opens with an explosion and the author's skillful imagination with deft descriptions of characters and settings which will propel the reader through the story from page one to its surprise conclusion.  Belfoure, following his recent sensational bestseller The Paris Architect again proves himself to be a literary genius.  Set in 1886 New York, you will be plunged into the world of high society, Lower East Side street crime, survival instincts learned in the slums, and thievery crossing the lines.  When architect John Cross is approached by James Kent, the mastermind of a crime organization, his life is upended by a choice only he can make:  to save the life of his son who has become indebted to Kent for heavy gambling losses.  How does Cross's knowledge about the wealth within high society mansions, museums and banks set off robberies that even the smartest detectives won't be able to solve?  The choice Cross makes first results in fear, but soon turns to excitement, and then to exhilaration.  Meanwhile several family members are leading their own secret lives hidden from their father.  Belfoure, himself an architect, is so capable of offering the architectural history and setting of New York during the 1880s which he weaves into his novel in a fictional thriller filled with captivating intrigue.  Very highly recommended.  (Sourcebooks, $25.99).
