Rhinos Don't Eat Pancakes
by Anna Kemp
One morning while Daisy was eating breakfast a rhino strolls into the kitchen.  Yes, that's right!  A rhino as big as a bus and as purple as a plum---and also hungry.  So Rhino takes a chomp of Daisy's pancake and goes upstairs, but when Daisy calls out to her mom and dad for help, they, as usual, are too busy to listen.  Meanwhile Rhino makes himself at home, but every time Daisy tries to get her parents' attention, they say, "Can't you see we're busy?"  So Daisy and Rhino become friends; they play and eat together, but Mom and Dad still don't notice...until the pancakes run out.  How can Daisy get her parents' attention and what will happen to Rhino?  A heartwarming story of family and friendship with delightful colored illustrations by Sara Ogilvie for ages 4 to 8.  (Simon & Schuster, $16.99).

Woof: A Bowser and Birdie Novel
by Spencer Quinn
If you're 8 to 12 years old, a dog lover, and enjoy a suspenseful mystery, Woof will be a great summer read for you.  When 11-year-old Birdie and her grammy go to the animal shelter to pick out a pet for Birdie's birthday, they come home with Bowser and find that Black Jack, the prize-winning marlin that's been mounted on the wall of Grammy's Louisiana bayou country fish and bait shop since 1945 has been stolen.  Then a rumor comes to light that an old pirate's map for buried treasure was stuffed into Black Jack when it was prepared for hanging.  So begins an adventure for Birdie and Bowser to find Black Jack and the treasure map.  Secrets and old family feuds fill this hilarious story with laughable moments from Bowser's loyal yet rambunctious behavior, adding the small town characters that will take young readers to the very last page.  Humans rarely get dog treats, but this suspense "tail" is one good treat; and told in Bowser's voice with an unsolved ending that makes it looks like there will be more Bowser and Birdie tales to come.  Quinn is also the author of the popular adult Chet and Bernie Mystery Series featuring a detective and his crime-solving canine sidekick.  (Scholastic Press, $16.99).
