The Seven Sisters:Book 1
by Lucinda Riley
Maia D'Apliese and her five younger sisters are called back to their childhood home, an estate on the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland, following the death of their father.  The sisters were all adopted as babies, and are now each given letters left to them by their father containing clues to their true heritage.  Maia will take her "clue letter" to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where she begins to find the story of her origins, a story which began eighty years earlier in Rio in the 1920s.  This is a tale of the love and sacrifice of two women separated by nearly a century and united by a family secret.  This page-turner is the first in a "time-switched" seven book series I am eagerly looking forward to reading.  Riley is the author of previously bestselling novels which I also recommend:  The Orchid House, The Lavender Garden, and The Midnight Rose. Don't miss this new novel which I couldn't put down!  Probably the best writing she has brought to her readers so far.
(Atria Books, $24.99).
The Dead Will Tell
by Linda Castillo
In 1979, when an Amish father and his children died during a bungled robbery, his wife disappeared, and his 14-year-old son Billy became the only survivor in the tragedy.  Now in 2014, Kate Burkholder, chief of police in the small Ohio community of Painters Mill, is called in to investigate an apparent suicide but finds evidence that suggests murder and points back to the 35 year long-ago tragic night.  When Kate finds a second man dead, she discovers a link in the case that sends her investigation, along with her partner, State Agent John Tomasetti, chasing a difficult trail of evidence.  In this latest novel in the Kate Burkholder series, author Castillo lets her fans know the past never dies.  A suspense thriller impossible to put down.  This series, set in Ohio Amish country, starts with Sworn to Silence with the continuing novels now in paperback.
(St. Martin's Press, $7.99).
The Goldfinch
by Donna Tartt
The death of his mother and the desertion of his criminally dishonest alcoholic father leads thirteen-year-old Theo Decker on a time-warp odyssey from New York City to Amsterdam and into his own crime-caused world while trying to save and protect The Goldfinch, a Dutch seventeenth century masterpiece he "rescued" in an explosion at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Falling into teenage delinquency and while trying to climb out, Theo is sidelined by his friendship with Boris and his love for Pippa, all the while becoming a damaged adult, hinging his fate and steering his life to an ultimate end:  saving the painting.  Tartt's engrossing novel delves into the mystery and sorrow of survival and the beauty and obsession of art.  The author's remarkable storytelling will immerse the reader in elegant prose, captured settings, and memorable characters.  This 2014 Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction is highly recommended.    Now in paperback.  (Back Bay Books, $20.00)
Do Princesses Make Happy Campers?
by Carmela Coyle
Our favorite princess finds her family getting ready to go camping in the great outdoors.  How can she help?  Shopping, packing the gear, or pitching the tent?  What if it rains; how does the family spend the day?  The princess prefers hunting for critters she wants to keep, or fishing instead of doing dishes.  Riding her bike on a trail or quietly watching Mother Nature's view from the top of a hill, and then returning to camp:  eat like a bear, then have the campfire request you make s'mores.  What can be better than this clever camping story told in the author's poetic wit?  Perhaps the delightful colorful page-by-page illustrations by Mike Gordon which adapt themselves to good storytelling by parents or teachers and librarians offering children ages 4 to 8 some fun-listening time.  With summer not too far away and families planning a camping experience with their children, this is a delightful story to get it all off to a good start. This author also wrote the amazing book Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots? (Taylor Trade Publishing, $15.95).
