Our Lenten Journey Begins Today

New Beginnings Leads to a New Pastor and a New Name for New Journey United Church of Christ

The UCC Church in Hutchinson Minnesota has been on quite a journey.  After the retirement of longtime pastor, Brian Brosz, the church decided to take time to examine themselves and their church rather than immediately form a search committee for a new minister.  Under the guidance of Pastor Cindy Mueller, the congregation participated in the New Beginnings Assessment Service.  As an Intentional Interim Pastor, Cindy had just the training needed to help them through the transition.  Changes started filtering into the church through its new puppet theater and its nontraditional Christmas pageant.

Kim Schutt, moderator, said that through the New Beginnings program, the congregation grew closer.  "The small groups were absolutely essential." she said.  "I was surprised by the number of people who signed up.  It was really great how they embraced it."

Small groups used the New Beginnings curriculum to take a thorough look at themselves, and in October of 2014 the congregation made the decision to restart and revitalize their mission.  The restart included not only a new incorporation, but also a new name.  New Journey was selected because it reflects the process and future growth and change.

On January 8, First Congregational United Church of Christ took time to celebrate the congregation's 154-year-old legacy.  Longtime members shared their thoughts about the church and its history.

On January 10, 2016, New Journey United Church of Christ began their ministry together with a new look forward, the dedication of the church's new name and the installation of the Rev. Jill Warner as Revitalization Pastor and Partner.

Rev. Warner is excited about the partnership.  "This vital congregation recognizes that simply telling the story in the old way doesn't work anymore," Warner said.  "Imagine, question, doubt, follow....that's how faith grows.  I can't wait to see where the Spirit will lead us."
Support for Refugee-Welcoming Congregations

The United Church of Christ is looking to turn to a fresh page by finding ways to offer more support for refugee-welcoming congregations across the wider church.  The project became even more important on Wednesday, January 20, when a bill that would have paused the resettlement of refugees from Syria and Iraq was blocked by the Senate, opening the doors to thousands who are fleeing persecution in their home countries.  The UCC is especially working to collect a list of congregations that have welcomed refugees who have been persecuted and fled their home countries for safety.  In order to add your name to the list or to read the article, you can read the full story on the UCC website.
Minnesota Conference Traveling to Israel-Palestine in 2017
Have you always wanted to "walk where Jesus walked"?  Do the complexities of the situation in Israel-Palestine interest you? Do you long to experience the region that is the cradle of three Abrahamic faiths...Judaism, Christianity, and Islam?

The Minnesota Conference is organizing a study tour to Israel-Palestine for January 9-20, 2017.  The experience is open to anyone eager to learn more about the region and committed to intentional study and dialogue.  Participants will visit such holy sites as the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, the Mount of Olives and other sites in Jerusalem, Galilee, the Dead Sea, and more.  We will also visit with global mission partners of the UCC there in the region, and meet with a variety of groups dedicated to justice and peace in the Holy Land.  This study tour is part of a commitment we made as a Conference to a 2-year period of study following the adoption of a resolution at Annual Meeting 2015.

The tour will be led by Reverend Bonnie Van Overbeke, a retired UCC pastor who has extensive experience in Israel-Palestine and has led multiple other groups.  Minnesota Conference Minister Shari Prestemon will be part of the delegation and share in leadership.  Approximate cost of the trip (per person) will be $3000 (including air fare).

If you are interested in being part of this amazing experience, contact Conference Minister Shari Prestemon.  Exact cost, itinerary, deposit deadlines, and other details will be released at a later date.

Is Your Church Attending Youth Camp at Pilgrim Point?

"Strengthen Your Youth Ministry -- Go to Camp Together!"

Whether you have one youth in your church or many, attend camp together (6th-12th grades) for an unforgettable ministry and life-changing week! Adult church leaders attend camp with their youth and serve as camp staff/counselors for the week. This program is designed to help get your church youth ministry going into high gear!

The theme for this summer is "Love One Another" - a theme focused on how we greet our neighbor and how we recognize and welcome the other among us. Always an important theme to lift up, it is especially important this year in response to the negative political rhetoric that will be ongoing throughout the summer and fall.

Please email Zac at zacn@uccmn.org no later than February 15 to let us know which Youth Camp week your congregation prefers to attend together: Week 1 (July 10-15) or Week 2 (July 17-22). Registration for Youth Camps to be opened shortly after this deadline.
Congregations, Reserve Your Space at Pilgrim Point!

Congregations of the Minnesota Conference UCC are invited to sponsor a week or weekend at Pilgrim Point Camp. Each day we provide two all-camp, cross-generational programs - and are willing to work with you to make them as meaningful as possible for your congregation. We offer worship planning and support for the Vesper's leadership (done once a day as all-camp), providing as little or as much of the worship or music you request. Don't worry - there will still be plenty of time for relaxing, playing at the beach on one of our new water slides, playing in the ball field or creating your own experiences!

Input Your Annual Changes to the UCC Yearbook & Directory
It's time for additions, changes, and updates for the UCC Yearbook & Directory for the coming year.  You can access the Data Hub for reporting 2015 information.  CARD has created several helpful video tutorials and information sheets to guide churches through the process.  On this page, congregations can find a Definitions Tip Sheet for reporting categories, printable Data Hub reporting guide for churches, and several video tutorials.

Our goal in the Minnesota Conference office is to have 100% participation in reporting this year, so we need your help. If your church does not have regular internet access or is not comfortable inputting data electronically you can fill out a paper form and submit it to Sandy in the MN Conference office and she can input it.  Contact Sandy at 612-230-3370 if you are unable to download the paper form and she can send it to you.
