Sacred Calling, "Terrible Privilege"

I was not at all expecting that particular phone call on that unseasonably warm Spring day. The caller was no one I knew, and had no connection with the United Church of Christ. But that conversation became a profound reminder to me that this ministry we share is a sacred and precious enterprise.

The gentleman on the other end of the phone line that day -- let's call him "Ed" -- had been referred specifically to me by the facilitator of his grief support group. Ed's 22-year-old son had died of cancer just one year ago, and Ed was tortured by questions of faith that left him little peace or comfort. I tried at first to steer him toward his own pastor or to counselors I could recommend. But it soon became apparent that what he desperately wanted was to talk to me, right then and there.

Change Ahead for Associate Conference Minister Wade Zick
Wake Zick After 8 years of ministry in the Minnesota Conference United Church of Christ, Associate Conference Minister Wade Zick is heading west to take on a new ministry and challenge. On Thursday, Wade submitted his resignation to the Conference effective June 30. He has accepted a position with the Pacific Northwest Conference (UCC) as Managing Director of Pilgrim Firs Camp and Conference Center in Port Orchard, Washington.

"I am extremely grateful for the amazing opportunities that this position has given to me both professionally and personally. It has been a privilege to serve the Minnesota Conference, to innovate with you and work to strengthen both congregations and leaders."

Since beginning his service with the Minnesota Conference in May 2007, Wade has reinvigorated the Conference's ministries with children and youth and enabled a whole new level of excellent resourcing for those working with children and youth in congregations.
