Mission Bite: from across the Minnesota Conference |
from Pamela Cook, Acting Chair, Emmaus Anti-Racism Transformation Team
Sunday, February 9 is Racial Justice Sunday
"Until the predominantly white church in the United States becomes an anti-racist church, race and our racialized identity will continue to haunt and define the church."
Joseph Barndt, Becoming an Anti-Racist Church
As we observe Racial Justice Sunday, where is your church on the continuum?
The United Church of Christ and its predecessor denominations have a long history of working towards racial justice. On Racial Justice Sunday, members of the United Church of Christ re-commit to their baptismal covenant to claim an anti-racist identity and examine the legacy of racism in the church, the nation, and the world. In an effort to confront the sin of racism, the UCC began a church wide initiative on Sacred Conversations on Race http://www.ucc.org/sacred-conversation in 2008. Racial Justice Sunday is a great opportunity for churches to begin this dialogue by inviting the spirit of discernment, justice, and compassion into worship. Some suggestions for how your congregation can observe Racial Justice Sunday are: inviting a guest speaker to give a sermon, planning an adult education session or Bible Study about the importance of racial justice, or finding ways to incorporate hymns, liturgies, or other sacred parts of service into worship that reflect the diverse range of our church's shared histories.
Racial Justice Sunday is also an opportunity for congregations to assess their anti-racist identity. Where does your church fall on the continuum of becoming an antiracist multicultural church? Is it:
- An Intentionally Segregated Church - intentional and public exclusion of people of color.
- A "Club" Church - tolerant of a limited number of people of color with "proper" perspective and credentials.
- A Multicultural Church - develops official polices and practices regarding anti-racism
- An Anti-Racist Church - programs of anti-racism training are instituted throughout the church resulting in a common analysis of systemic racism. (identity change)
- A Transforming Church - commits to the new stage of redesigning, restructuring, and institutionalizing an anti-racist identity. (structural change)
- A Changing Church in a Changing Society
- commits to participation in the struggle to dismantle racism throughout society and rebuilds and redefines all relationships and activities between the church and the wider community on the basis of anti-racist commitments. (Continuum developed by Crossroads Ministry and adapted by Joseph Barndt.)
Certainly, our goal is for all the congregations of the Minnesota Conference to be changing churches in a changing society.
How can the Emmaus Team assist your church? The purpose of the Emmaus Team is to communicate and enact the ministry goals of the Minnesota Conference UCC to be a Conference that is multi-cultural, anti-racist, racially just, and multi-ethnic by:
- a) Assisting churches, pastors, and lay leaders in developing a Racial Justice Action Plan including forming a congregational anti-racism ministry;
- b.) Facilitating churches' implementation of the United Church of Christ's Sacred Conversations on Race; and
- c.) Providing ongoing resources to churches, pastors, and lay leaders for sermons, special events, workshops, and other programs that seek to provide continuing education and awareness of racism and racial justice work.
The Emmaus Team is made up of lay persons and clergy from different
racial and ethnic backgrounds and different age groups who bring together a multitude of knowledge, training, and experience with racial justice and anti-racism training. In the last year, we co-sponsored, promoted, and attended the Overcoming Racism Conference presented by Facilitating Racial Equity Collaborative (FREC). With limited resources, the Emmaus Team views annual support of this event as a significant way of offering education and training to the Minnesota Conference. Similarly, our workshops at Annual Meeting have also afforded opportunities for racial justice education and awareness.
Over the past several years, we have presented at least one workshop annually dealing with Native American truth-telling. In addition to a workshop on Dakota heritage and culture at last year's Annual Meeting, we also hosted a book display of faith-based multicultural materials and provided several anti-racism handouts. The team was also represented in the planning and supported the work of Healing Minnesota
Stories whose mission is to create understanding and healing between people of faith and American Indian people who call Minnesota their home. We view this work as directly sustaining recent Annual Meeting resolutions on reconciliation with Native Americans.
Moreover, during this past summer, we worked with the associate conference minister to help congregations who wanted to address issues surrounding the Trayvon Martin case. Furthermore, we have been networking with our counterparts in other denominations on ways we can share and support each other's work.
For the rest of the year, we will be making preparations for this year's 2014 Annual Meeting workshops; we will be considering co-sponsoring a resolution on antiracism and creating diversity through active inclusion; we will be updating our website; and we will be continuously working within the Conference to give churches, members, and staff access to Racial Justice resources that will help further the mission of the wider church to be a multi-cultural, anti-racist, and multi-ethnic church.
We would like to acknowledge that there are churches in our Conference who, independent of the Emmaus Team, continuously offer Racial Justice education opportunities for the members of their congregations and communities. For example, Rev. James Pennington, the former pastor of Living Table UCC in Minneapolis, used his sabbatical to attend a racial justice conference and participate in antiracism training. Additionally, he read about and visited historic racial justice sites and weekly shared his learnings with his congregation. After his return, the congregation hosted and continues to host book discussions, film screenings, guest speakers, and other events in its dismantling racism work.
Other congregations include, but are not limited to, Cherokee Park United Church, St. Paul; Peace UCC, Duluth; Plymouth Congregational Church, Minneapolis; UCC New Brighton; New Spirit UCC, Savage; and First Congregational UCC, Anoka. If your church is actively working toward Racial Justice, we encourage you to share your work with others in the Conference by advertising your events in the COMMAntary or by reaching out to surrounding churches so that we all have access to ongoing Racial Justice education and ministry efforts. If you are interested in working with the Emmaus Team, visiting one of our workshops, or are in need of resources, contact us by emailing: emmausteam2004@gmail.com.

New Cornerstone Fund Mission Interpreter

New Cornerstone Fund Mission Interpreter
for Your Conference
Greetings and grace to you all. I want to introduce myself. My name is David Moyer, and I have recently taken on the role of "Mission Interpreter" in the Upper Midwest for the Cornerstone Fund of the United Church of Christ. In July of 2013 I retired as the Conference Minister in the Wisconsin Conference, and I am now enjoying meeting people in this new role.
The Cornerstone Fund is a financial ministry of the United Church of Christ that provides opportunities for individuals, churches, associations, conferences and other institutions related to the United Church of Christ to invest and receive a competitive return on term notes and other financial instruments while supporting ministries of our church.
The money invested in the Cornerstone Fund is then offered as loans to local churches and UCC related ministries for purposes like new construction, remodeling, new program development, debt consolidation or the growth of ministries.
As a Cornerstone Mission Interpreter, I am available to your congregation or organization to answer questions and provide information on both investments and loans. I invite you to contact me about the ways the Cornerstone Fund of the UCC can be of service to your church. Look for a Cornerstone Fund table in the resource area of your next Conference gathering.
Please visit the Cornerstone Fund website at cornerstonefund.org for current investment and loan rates and other information, or contact me at dmoyer@cornerstonefund.org or 608-630-3177.

New Profile System Information!
|
The new system is to be released Jan. 31, 2014. By means of a validated denominational Profile and a live, self-reported 'Snapshot' - will document eligibility for call as well as improve timely visibility for ministers. Unlike the 'vintage' profile, the new profile contains only three written/phone references, and gives space for a variety of callings and vocational experiences. What doesn't change in the profile: the criminal background check, an ethical self-disclosure, and conference verification of ministerial standing and fitness. Search committees will receive some of both profiles for up to 18 months, or until vintage profiles expire. For additional information on the new profile system, please go to: http://prezi.com/thch46cde2ok/search-and-call/. We will continue to provide updated information as it becomes available.

2014 Ecumenical Advocacy Days
|
from your Conference Justice & Witness Team
2014 Ecumenical Advocacy Days
When: March 21, 2014 Where: Doubletree Hotel, 300 Army-Navy Dr., Crystal City, Virginia
Come to the 12th annual Ecumenical Advocacy Days and join UCC advocates and hundreds of other Christians in "Resisting Violence, Building Peace." Guided by the image of Jesus weeping over a capital city that turned from the true way of peace (Luke 19:41-42), we will expose the violence that pervades our culture and world:
- Nearly 3,000 children in the U.S. killed by guns each year;
- A quarter of U.S. women experiencing domestic abuse at some point in their lives;
- A decade of war, nearly 1,000 civilians killed by drones, and Pentagon spending dominating our federal budget over poverty protections, healthy job creation, economic revitalization and true international human security;
- More than 45 million people worldwide uprooted from their homes by persecution and armed conflict; and
- Deadly conflicts over natural resources erupting around the world.
As people of hope, we are consoled by the promise that "justice and peace shall embrace" (Psalm 85:10), and are reminded that justice requires peace-making and that peace requires justice-making. We will confront and imagine how to transform the violence in our world, and together will seek a vision of peace in the community, peace among the peoples, peace in the marketplace, and peace with the earth. Through prayer, worship, speakers, and advocacy training we will discover a faith-based vision for national policies that "guide our feet into the path of peace" (Luke 1:79), all culminating with Monday's Congressional Lobby Day on Capitol Hill.

Come and See: New Beginnings
|
Has your congregation wondered what God is calling you to do and be in this time and this place? This key question is at the heart of new service to our congregations through the UCC's New Beginnings Assessment Service. New Beginnings assesses a congregation's strengths and challenges as it seeks to redevelop its ministry. The goal is to put the congregation on the road to sustainable Christian witness and action within its community.
The cost for the service, which is significantly less than similar services with outside consultants, is $2,800.00 for each congregation.
David Schoen, Minister and Team Leader for Congregational Assessment and Support, will conduct three "Come and See" sessions to acquaint pastors and leaders in Minnesota congregations with the process and answer questions on January 25 and 26. These sessions are free, but please register to help us plan for each session. Sessions will be held around the Conference as follows:
- January 25, 9:30-11:30am, Congregational Church, Faribault
- January 25, 2:00-4:00pm, Hazel Park UCC, St. Paul
- January 26, 2:00-4:00pm First Congregational UCC, Brainerd

Upcoming VRV Workshop: INSPIRING LEADERS
|
VRV Workshop - February 5, 2014
(Registration @ 9:00am, Workshop 9:30-3:00pm)
Falcon Heights UCC, Falcon Heights
INSPIRING LEADERS
Developing Effective Congregational Leadership
Facilitator: Rev. Glenna T. Shepherd,
Center for Progressive Renewal
Congregations see increased commitment and vitality when we recruit leaders who inspire others to be passionately involved in the ministries of the church.
But we often think that we must find someone - anyone - to fill established roles in the structure of the congregation. What if we change our approach and tap into the interests, skills, and passions of our people, if we instead listen deeply to the lives of the congregation and look for leadership qualities?
In this practical workshop that includes underpinning goals of faith formation and service to communities, we'll consider strategies for recruiting, training, nurturing, and developing ministry leaders.
INSPIRING LEADERS will focus on:
- Connecting ministries to the life of the whole church
- Building adaptive leaders
- Using imagination to build ministries
- Equipping leaders with the resources they need
- Inspiring vision and moving to action
We will also consider basic, but pivotal issues about qualities to look for in ministry leaders, about leadership and vision, and about building systems of communication using a variety of media.
Register Now!
Cost: $30.00 Includes lunch, breaks, all materials, and access to archived videos of all presentations. Teams of two or more from a congregation get to bring their pastor for free!
Can't attend on February 5? You can still access the presentations by registering for the virtual participation option. Each of the presentations will be recorded and streamed over the internet. Your virtual participation registration will get you each presentation for the cost of $15.00. You will also be able to receive the handout materials electronically.
