Mission Bite: from across the Minnesota Conference
From Rev. Shari Prestemon , Conference Minister
with excerpts taken from a story written by Anthony Moujaes
Disaster Response Ministry
of the United Church of Christ

Typhoon Haiyan (named 'Yolanda' in the Philippines itself) made landfall in the Philippines on Friday, November 8 and displaced an estimated 4.5 million people. Food supplies are scarce, there's massive hoarding and fuel is quickly becoming limited in the Philippines. Though the original death toll estimate of 10,000 appears to have been higher than the actual numbers now being reported, there was nonetheless massive loss of life.

"There was no way in which people could escape the typhoon's path," said Bishop Marigza of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, a partner organization of the UCC. "Because of the extent of the damage, there are still many places that haven't been reached."

In the week following the $250,000 appeal issued by the national setting of the United Church of Christ, people across the life of United Church of Christ responded generously. As of Friday evening, Nov. 15, $113,595 had been donated online, an unprecedented amount for on-line giving in the UCC, with an additional $6,243 sent to denominational offices. The UCC has sent $50,000 in grants, funded by One Great Hour of Sharing, to the ACT Alliance, the UCCP and Church World Service (CWS) to assist relief efforts. The money will fund early response and initial recovery work of the UCCP, ACT Alliance and CWS to provide provisioning supplies, emergency shelter items, drinking water and money - items desperately needed as people fight to stay alive.

The United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) expressed gratitude for the church's generosity in the early stages of the recovery process. "We thank you for responding to our cry for help," Marigza said. "This shows that in Christ, there is no East or West, no North or South."

For more detailed information about recovery efforts and challenges underway in the Philippines, read a very recent report from a Global Mission Intern of the UCC's Common Global Ministries Board:  globalministries.org/news/eap/update-on-uccp-response-to.html.

More recently, massive tornadoes cut a wide swath of destruction across several states in the United States. Once again, the United Church of Christ will respond... and if your congregation has taken the One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) offering, you have already responded to these recent disasters quickly and meaningfully. When disaster strikes, OGHS dollars are immediately deployed to bring a swift response to those impacted by the disaster. Even more important, the UCC takes a long-term view of recovery in disaster-impacted areas, understanding that recovery is a slow and unfolding process that can often take years. Through our partners and giving, the UCC will accompany communities in their ongoing struggle to recover and rebuild.

Our amazing response to areas and peoples devastated by natural disasters is just one reflection of how our covenantal relationships in the United Church of Christ allow us to respond to the needs of our brothers and sisters in the next state or across the globe. Together, we can do more than we could ever do alone. Together, we can bring healing and hope in the midst of loss and ruin. Together, we are the United Church of Christ.

Peace UCC in Minnesota Lake was incorrectly indicated as St. Paul's UCC in last week's edition of the COMMAntary. It was the congregation at Peace UCC in Minnesota Lake which recently celebrated their 125th anniversary and to whom the photos belong. The wonderful photos were taken by Julie Eichhorn. Thank you so much, Peace UCC, for sharing a slice of your celebration with the rest of us in the Minnesota Conference!

A Time of Thanksgiving: 2014 Annual Meeting

A Time of Thanksgiving

Each November, millions of people travel across states, regions and this nation to gather with their families for a time of Thanksgiving. They travel by car, by bus, by train and by plane.

It is a "Homecoming." It is a family reunion. It is a time of renewing their sense of bonding that miles cannot separate.

Each spring, people come from all parts of this state to gather as a family of faith. This, too, is a "Homecoming" and a family reunion. We come from Moorhead and Mankato. We come from Grand Marais and Granite Falls. We come from Hutchinson and Hackensack; we come from Walker and Wayzata.

We come to gather as a family of churches united in Christ. We come to renew our bonds. We come to affirm our faith. We come to share in worship, in fellowship and in taking care of the business that re-affirms our covenant and advances the mission and ministry of our conference.

Yes, this coming spring we will gather for the Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Conference of the United Church of Christ. We will gather at the College of St. Benedict on June 13-15 - and we hope that you will be there to share in this affirmation of family and faith. It will be a "Homecoming," a family reunion and a time of Thanksgiving.

New Authorized Minister Profile Portal!

Same Purpose. New Path. The United Church of Christ Ministerial Profile is changing! New technology was developed this year to better meet the needs of authorized ministers, conferences and calling bodies. The new profiles portal goes live on January 31, 2014, already winning praise for being responsive, timely, strategic, and user-friendly. If you have an approved profile as of January 31, 2014, (heretofore known as a vintage profile), it will continue to be honored until the criminal background check expires. Anyone with a current criminal background check may choose to incorporate it into a brand new profile instead. All authorized ministers are invited to add information as a searchable "Snapshot" in the profiles portal during the first quarter of 2014. For more information on the new Profile and Snapshot, see: www.ucc.org/ministers/profile.

INSPIRING LEADERS

Developing Effective Congregational Leadership

Facilitator: Rev. Glenna T. Shepherd,

Center for Progressive Renewal

Congregations will see increased commitment and vitality when we recruit leaders who can inspire others to be passionately involved in the ministries of the church.

But we often think that we must find someone - anyone - to fill established roles in the structure of the congregation. What if we change our approach and tap into the interests, skills, and passions of our people, if we instead listen deeply to the lives of the congregation and look for leadership qualities?

In this practical workshop that includes underpinning goals of faith formation and service to communities, we'll consider strategies for recruiting, training, nurturing, and developing ministry leaders.

INSPIRING LEADERS will focus on:

  • Connecting ministries to the life of the whole church
  • Building adaptive leaders
  • Using imagination to build ministries
  • Equipping leaders with the resources they need
  • Inspiring vision and moving to action

We will also consider basic, but pivotal issues about qualities to look for in ministry leaders, about leadership and vision, and about building systems of communication using a variety of media. More details to follow, but mark your calendars now!

Homegrown Faith and Justice: Livestream!

Date: Friday, November 22, 2013*
3:30 - 5:00PM Eastern Standard Time
Watch the Livestream Here!

What is the unique role parents and guardians play in the faith formation of their families? What are the joys and challenges parents encounter as they try to raise children with faith, empathy, a sense of fairness and the courage to act justly? How is the church supporting them, and how might we further support their efforts? Join us for this conversation with a panel of colleagues on the intersections of faith formation, justice advocacy, and the unique role of parents as the primary faith teachers of children in day-to-day life. Learn about Homegrown Faith and Justice, a use-at-home resource for families that will be published and released in late 2013, thanks to sponsorship from the United Church of Christ Minnesota Ashley Endowment Fund.

Our own Associate Conference Minister of Faith Formation for Children and Youth, Wade Zick, will be one of the panelists for this conversation!

*Note: this was originally posted as a Cleveland-based event on November 23rd; it has been revised as a livestream event for broad, free accessibility and will be made available online for viewing.

Black Friday Action in Saint Paul
Last year more than $20 billion was spent during the Black Friday weekend, resulting in giant profits for corporations like Target and Walmart, yet the workers who make Black Friday and holiday shopping happen are often forced to work for poverty wages. Minnesotans are standing up and saying that this isn't right. We believe the employees who make Black Friday happen deserve better pay and working conditions, but we need to make sure our voices are heard.
