Since 1899, the Gaylord United Church of Christ has had a history of connecting with community needs, sharing a strong music ministry, and providing leaders and volunteers to school and community activities. We were the first English-speaking church in Gaylord and we are now the only church with a choir that sings every Sunday. Our history included a successful 22+ year ministry of leadership from Rev. Don Britt. We wanted to continue this tradition after Rev. Britt left our church in 2002. Rev. John Guttermann mentored our congregation ten years ago during our interim period of transition after Rev. Britt's ministry.

Rev. Guttermann's interim ministry planted the seeds for tackling change and doing new things. His favorite phrase was: "If you want to grow the church, you have to grow the ministry." During many congregational brainstorming sessions, we sought to identify a ministry and mission that would resonate not only with our small congregation, but also with our rural community. We discussed many ideas, tried a few small experiments, agreed upon our core strengths and values, and wanted to do something.

However, after 7+ years of "wandering in the wilderness" our members increasingly felt as if all we did was talk and talk, but did not DO anything. And we were also afraid to experiment with bold new activities, because we were afraid that we could be exposed to criticism, failure, or a waste of resources - namely, time, money, and trust. Despite this fear, we continued to remember not only our past successes, but also Rev. Guttermann's advice to try new ideas and new ways of doing things, even though not all new ideas will be successful and not all new ideas can be undertaken at one time. In other words, do not be afraid to fail.

During this same time, the Minnesota Conference was going through a strategic planning and visioning process. Our church benefited from having a representative on the Conference Board of Directors, so we also received ideas, resources, and encouragement from our wider connection within the United Church of Christ. In addition, our partnership with the New Ulm United Church of Christ and the sharing of pastoral leadership from Rev. Hank Campbell has been helpful. Rev. Campbell has supported our desire to build community connections. He has also been willing to experiment with our worship services, introducing new music and hymnals, supporting guest concerts, programs, and special worship services, etc.

The table was set for July and October 2012, when church leaders and our current pastor, Rev. Campbell, attended two uplifting VRV workshops and June 2013 when we attended the Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Conference UCC. These gatherings were not only inspirational, but they reinforced Rev. Guttermann's words of advice from a decade ago. And our former Associate Conference Minister, Rev. Elena Larssen, emphatically supported our efforts to move past our fears. The advice was consistent: "Visioning and prayer should always be present."

We were reminded that visioning and prayer should go on constantly. We remembered Rev. Guttermann's advice to "grow the ministry." We learned that vital congregations stop and say "YES, we'll try that!" VRV - What an exciting concept! VRV - Vitalty*Renewal*Vision! Church leaders were re-energized! We saw and heard about ideas other congregations were successfully doing. We decided to try the VRV approach with our small (95 member) congregation and see what would happen. Guess what? The congregation is re-energized!

Exciting things are happening at the Gaylord UCC. We have become a "4-x, permission-giving, community-focused" church. What does this mean? First, we are focused on connecting the resources of our church with the needs of our community. We have asked our members to trust in our leadership and to pray for guidance. We have hosted various church events to welcome and connect with the Hispanic community in Gaylord. Second, we have given everyone permission to experiment with new ministries, mission outreach programs, and community events...explicitly stating that we have permission to spend up to $2,000 on a new idea, even if it is not successful. This means that we have the freedom to experiment. We have given members permission to fail, to fail frequently, to fail quickly...and to fail forward!

Third, we have encouraged everyone to identify new ministry opportunities. If at least 3 people want to lead the effort, we'll give it a try. Finally, we are centering on our core strengths, while recognizing we have limited resources. Hence, the "4-x" statement. Our goal is to become a great church each and every year by having at least: 4 great worship services, 4 great musical concerts or events, 4 great community programs, and 4 great mission outreach projects.

With our congregation's blessing and support, ideas are being tried, action steps are being taken and we are not afraid to try, try, try again. Our focus on building stronger community connections has resulted in many new initiatives. We have invited our community to join us at "Pepsi with the Pastor" in one of Gaylord's eateries. We moved our congregation's 2013 Wednesday night Lenten suppers and services out of the church building and into the local retirement and care center. (It was more work; but what a great feeling of joining in faith and fellowship with residents who have difficulty getting out to church!)

Boards and Committees have permission to carry out new ideas. 3-member teams are moving forward with plans to host special musical events, special worship services, and improve our social networking presence. We have also deferred other ideas until 2014 or later. ("Not all ideas have to be undertaken at the same time" J. Guttermann). We have discovered a wonderful mission/service project that is gathering excitement, involvement, and broad support, not only from within our congregation, but from other service organizations within the Gaylord community - the P.E.T. (Personal Energy Transportation) project.

We have not yet increased the number of members in the Gaylord UCC congregation, but we are making a new name for ourselves in Gaylord, gaining visibility as a church that is connected with the community. Gaylord residents wonder how such a small church can do so much.   The answer: we believe that we have a lot to give and we enjoy sharing our gifts with others.

A Trip to Back Bay Mission

Founded in 1922 Back Bay Mission has been a leader in serving, helping, and empowering the homeless and less fortunate in Biloxi, Mississippi for 91 years. It is one of the oldest and most highly respected organizations within the United Church of Christ and on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, providing innovative and compassionate solutions and responses to those who are suffering at the hands of social injustice, economic hardships, and natural disasters. Back Bay Mission is an integral part of the UCC's greater mission work, and although there is no longer a UCC church located within the Biloxi community Back Bay continues to go strong and is a leader within the community speaking out on issues of ministry, poverty, hunger, and unemployment.

As a member of Peace United Church of Christ in Rochester, MN I recently had the opportunity to accompany 13 other individuals, along with 2 more from Grace UCC in Millville and 1 retired UCC minister who currently attends First Congregational UCC in Zumbrota, in a truly amazing and transforming week of faith, fellowship, friends, and service. After a long day of traveling from Minnesota to Mississippi we got to meet several members of the Back Bay staff and our "leaders" for the week: Craig, Bob, and Willie. As they told us some of their stories and history the passion that these individuals have for their line of work was obvious straight from the start. Perhaps their passion was best summed up when Craig shared with us all how much Back Bay Mission meant to him. He shared how he never attended a church previously to coming to Back Bay but that Back Bay had come to be his "church" and how he considered outgoing Executive Director (and now Minnesota UCC Conference Minister) Shari Prestemon to be his "Minister."

We also learned of Back Bay's many programs and partnerships that they have within the community of Biloxi and the neighboring community of Gulfport. Loaves and Fishes is a soup kitchen that was originally founded by Back Bay and although they have since become a separate entity, the two remain in close connection with one another. The Micah Center is a "day center" for the homeless of Biloxi, a place where they can get a nice shower, use facilities to clean their laundry, network with job coaches, share their stories with volunteers, get a meal to eat, and so much more. Through the affordable housing program Back Bay receives grants from both the cities of Biloxi and Gulfport to purchase abandoned and foreclosed homes in order to fix them up and then resell them to qualified homeowners at cost, creating truly affordable housing for the poor. Back Bay is also involved in providing affordable housing to vets, a food shelf, and so much more throughout the community that they serve.

Throughout the week we all had several moments where we experienced God's presence among us and working through us. Whether it was up on the roof laying shingles on Back Bay's latest affordable housing project, inside painting, or serving those in need at Loaves and Fishes or the Micah Center all seemed to find their "God moment." One of our participants was even interviewed by a local Biloxi television station and featured on their 5:00 news broadcast as part of a piece about Back Bay. All-in-all it was an amazing week that brought us all closer to one another, closer to our faith, and closer to God. Back Bay Mission is a truly remarkable program that continues in the example set by Jesus and it is only through our support and help that they can continue to do the amazing work that they do in the world today.

If you want to learn more about Back Bay Mission and ways you could get involved, be in touch with Rev. Dick Eick -- pastordick@yahoo.com or by phone (651)-385-7844. Dick is the Development Associate for Back Bay Mission in the Minnesota Conference is glad to speak to small groups or participate in worship, telling Back Bay's great story.

PROPHETIC VOICES

Who are my Legislators, and how are they doing on Environmental Legislation?

If you do not know the answer to that question, there is a website that can answer your questions. The League of Conservation Voters has an easy to use 501 c(3) non-profit website for that very purpose: www.checkmylegislator.org

Here's how:

  1. Click on the link above or enter the website address in your task bar.
  2. Fill in the blanks for your home address and zip code. Click "Go."
  3. On the right side of the screen, a box entitled "Your Legislators" will appear. It will tell you what district you are in, and who your Legislators are.
  4. Click on a Legislator's photo. You will see a detailed profile with their contact information, a list of committees they serve on, and how they voted on environmental issues.
  5. Click on one of the Bills' titles. An explanation of the Bill and how all the Legislators voted will be displayed.

Be bold. Contact your legislator. Tell them your thoughts. If they are doing a great job, let them know. If not, remind them of your climate change concerns, and the moral call to climate justice.

Respectful Conversations
Build Empathy with a Respectful Conversation
About Guns in Minnesota

Gun violence remained in the news this week and our prayers are with the Washington Navy Yard victims, their families and the shooter and his family. When difficult topics make headlines it can be almost impossible to talk about them without feeling our own temperatures rise and our own discussions get heated.

Enter the Respectful Conversations Project. Trained facilitators come to your congregation, train volunteers in how to run a neutral conversation on a difficult topic intended not to change minds, but soften hearts. Within a week of the training the conversation is held and your community is blessed by people who, according to months-later evaluations, have become more empathic listeners, more curious about others' perspectives, and more aware of their own attitudes.

Listen to Minnesota Council of Churches Executive Director Rev. Canon Peg Chemberlin's interview about Respectful Conversations on Minnesota Public Radio.

This is shared with you by your Justice and Witness Team. Congregations are encouraged to attend and to consider hosting a Respectful Conversation as well!
