Mission Bite: from across the Minnesota Conference
|
from Rev. Shari Prestemon, Conference Minister
Grace and peace to the members of the Minnesota Conference United Church of Christ!

As I enter my second week as your new Conference Minister, I do so with an expectant and hopeful heart. Multiple times over the last few months, and from multiple sources, I have heard that the Minnesota Conference is one of the strongest and healthiest Conferences in the United Church of Christ. And now I have my first opportunity to witness that vitality in person!
As I have spent time these first two weeks meeting individually with each member of the Conference staff, their dedication and their passion for their work has been abundantly clear. The vastness of this work we are privileged to undertake as a Conference has also been clear, as I begin to navigate an avalanche of acronyms, issues, concerns, and opportunities. It will take some time for me to familiarize myself with the fullness of life and ministry in the Minnesota Conference, and I ask for your patience and assistance in the midst of that process.
Having said that, I am not prepared to cast a bold new vision for the Conference at this early juncture of my ministry with you. I need first to more fully understand your history, your present, your gifts, and your challenges and possibilities. Authentic vision is born from intimate knowledge and appreciation of a place and people and circumstances, and that will evolve in time. In the meantime, I'm grateful for the diligent and valuable work you have already done as a Conference to identify your mission, core values, and Bold Inspirational Goals. This lays a wonderful foundation for all of us as the work of the Minnesota Conference moves forward.
Those who have gone before me left tremendous gifts behind. Karen Smith Sellers was with you during pivotal years and led the Minnesota Conference to broad new horizons. In the interim, Howard Bell brought enormous sensitivity and an abiding love for this Conference to what can often be a very anxious time for a Conference and staff. I give thanks for them both.
Be assured that I have every intention of moving us forward now in a spirit of hopefulness and tenacity and grace. As we step into the future God holds out to us, there are 5 commitments I will bring to the journey, commitments I pray you will share with me:
- Integrity: Our actions should match our words and our intentions to the best of our ability. Everything we do together should be marked by honesty and authenticity.
- Relationship/Covenant: We are in this together, one Body of Christ. As such, we should do the work necessary to build our relationships, know and respect one another, and work together in a spirit of holy covenant. Together is the only way forward.
- Innovation: Being willing to travel new paths and taking measured risks is critical. We must be open to the fresh winds of the Spirit in our midst, unafraid because we know God walks with us.
- Joyfulness: A sense of humor is so important! I hope we will share together a lightness of heart even as we undertake significant and serious discussions. Laughter is a healing balm!
- Faithfulness: In all times and places, in the midst of every challenge and joy, let us always trust that God is with us, blazing new paths and strengthening our sometimes weary souls. Let us learn to listen for God's still-speaking voice and be willing to follow God where God leads.
These are my commitments to you and to this new adventure in ministry. Please join me in greeting the future of the Minnesota Conference United Church of Christ with wide open arms!
Blessings and peace,
Reverend Shari Prestemon
(Email: sharip@uccmn.org; Tel. 612-230-3365)
P.S. Feel free to call, write, or stop in to the Conference office to help me begin that all-important process of getting to know you and strengthening our covenant. I look forward to meeting you!

PROPHETIC VOICES
Congregation Based Organizing in the Minnesota Conference
New Intern to Build Congregational Advocacy
Your Minnesota Conference Justice and Witness Team, working with United Theological Seminary (UTS) and the UTS-based Center for Public Ministry, has again engaged an intern for working with interested UCC congregations in becoming justice advocates and organizers for social change.
The intern, Kathryn Price, is a UTS student who will receive seminary credit for her work, will contact and help interested congregations learn more about becoming active organizers and advocates for social justice. This is the Justice and Witness (JW) Team's second advocacy intern and is made possible by your generous Our Church's Wider Mission (OCWM) donations and the budget approved for the coming year. It is part of the JW Team's ongoing response to the Annual Meeting's passage of the Prophetic Voices Resolution in 2012 (click here to read the resolution).
Kathryn is working toward an M.Div. at UTS with a concentration in Justice and Peace Studies. She is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Minnesota with a B.A. in English. The Rev. John Guttermann, member of the Justice and Witness Team, will be her internship supervisor (651-485-3104; intpasj@mac.com).

Gold Fever Screening

Justice & Witness Team & Mayflower UCC
to host Gold Fever: Global Screening Day Event
at Riverview Theater Minneapolis
Documentary film screening part of a
worldwide discussion on mining harms
On October 24, Minneapolis will join dozens of communities worldwide to screen Gold Fever, an "eye-opening and inspiring" documentary about the arrival of Goldcorp Inc to a remote Guatemalan village.
The screening, presented by G Project and co-hosted by the Minnesota Conference Justice and Witness Team, Mayflower UCC's Global Justice Advocacy Team, Witness for Peace, and many other organizations will take place at the Riverview Theater in Minneapolis at 7:00pm on October 24. Admission is $10, and the public is welcome. Following the screening of the film, Thom Haines, Executive Director at G Project, will host a discussion of the film.
"We believe that resource extraction is an underreported issue," said Haines. "By hosting a screening of Gold Fever as part of Global Screening Day we hope to shine a light on the harms to health, community and environment brought by transnational industrial mining and the connections to our own communities. As part of a global action, we hope to raise visibility of these issues here in Minnesota and show our support, alongside dozens of other communities worldwide. We are particularly standing in support of the Ecumenical Christian Council of Guatemala, our United Church of Christ partner who is actively engaged in mining resistance."
Dozens of groups, large and small, will screen Gold Fever around the world on or about October 17. For a map and details of the campaign visit: www.goldfevermovie.com/screening-day

Spiritual Direction Training
|
Special Invitation to UCC Clergy:
Spiritual Direction Training
If you have thought about getting trained in Spiritual Direction but found the cost and time requirements beyond your limits, please consider this Clergy Seminar Series offered by UU MidAmerica Region and co-sponsored by Plymouth Congregational Church of Minneapolis.
The Clergy Seminar Series in Congregation-Based Spiritual Direction is designed especially for ordained clergy, ministerial interns, and theological students. The goal is to start with the skills clergy already possess through their experience and training (such as Clinical Pastoral Education and pastoral counseling courses), and increase their competence as spiritual directors in three specific areas: brief spiritual direction, group spiritual direction, and supervision, both peer supervision and supervision of lay leaders of spiritual direction groups. While designed with the parish in mind, this training would be equally useful for many other ministry settings, such as chaplaincy and counseling. The dates for the three sessions are:
- October 28-30, 2013
- January 27-29, 2014
- May 19-21, 2014
Sessions will run from 1 pm on Mondays through 4:30 on Wednesdays, and will be held at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis. The full tuition is $975.00, but we're offering a special discount for this inaugural series of $325.00, bringing the cost down to $650.00. The seminars will be led by myself, the Rev. Phillip Lund, Congregational Life Consultant in the MidAmerica Region, and the Rev. Sue Sinnamon, former Program Consultant in the Southern Region. Sue has a graduate certificate in Spiritual Direction from the RUAH School at Richmond Hill, and Phil is completing his certification in Interspiritual Counseling at One Spirit Learning Alliance in New York.
To find out more about the Clergy Seminar Series or to register online, click here. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Rev. Dr. Paul Northwood at 612-977-1263.
