2013 Fall Leadership Retreat and Board Meeting Recap
Friday, September 6 and Saturday, September 7 members of the Minnesota Conference who lead work groups, committees and ministry teams met with the Conference Board of Directors and other leaders in the third annual Fall Leadership Retreat at Pilgrim Point. We were honored to share the retreat with Rev. Geoffrey Black (pictured at right), the general minister and president of the UCC, who shared with us the Vision, Purpose, Values and Bold Inspirational Goals of the UCC's national setting. Rev. Black also led us in a focused discussion on the best ways to encourage leadership development in the church, for every member as well as our ordained, licensed and commissioned leaders. While getting oriented to the Conference's structure and leadership, retreat members also shared deliberate one-to-one conversations to deepen relationships and prepare for the arrival of our new conference minister Rev. Shari Prestemon on October 1st. The 24-hour retreat passed very quickly, but we were grateful to receive the extravagant hospitality that characterizes Pilgrim Point Camp, our amazing staff, and the Minnesota Conference of the UCC.
Following the leadership retreat, the Conference Board of Directors shared a listening session with the Pilgrim Point Camp Committee to better understand and facilitate communication about Pilgrim Point Camp matters. We shared personal stories about how Pilgrim Point Camp and outdoor ministries had affected our lives and furthered the mission of the MN Conference. Participants shared their feelings about the opportunities of the camp's location and the value of outdoor ministry more generally in the Church. Together we reviewed the recent Conference history regarding concerns for the camp; preliminary reports from the Kaleidoscope consultants; and camping registration and financial data for Summer 2013. We then discussed areas where confusion persists regarding management and oversight responsibilities between the Board of Directors and the Pilgrim Point Camp Committee.

As the 2013 camping season comes to a close, we are at the end of a three-year period where the Conference has been trying to innovate and transform our Pilgrim Point ministry. Looking ahead, the Pilgrim Point Camp Committee will receive a final report from our camp consultant, Kaleidoscope, Inc., in late October and present the report, with preliminary recommendations for future action, to the Board of Directors on November 2nd. The Board will consider the report and initial recommendations, solicit input broadly around the Conference, receive any final recommendations from the Pilgrim Point Camp Committee by December 15th, and vote on next steps for Pilgrim Point at its January 4th meeting. As we finished our meeting earlier this month, the joint session affirmed our gratitude for the dynamic growth at Pilgrim Point in recent years due to the passion and commitment of excellent staff and an increasing number of churches in the Conference. The Board of Directors is committed to proactive communication throughout the Conference and requests your prayers during the discernment of these coming months.
With gratitude,
Rev. Oby Ballinger
At-large member, MN Conference Board of Directors

A lot has changed recently and this webinar is designed to show you inexpensive (even free) tools that will help you stream your worship services to the world. Presenter for Webinars #3 and 4: Mike Mitchell has significant experience doing media & communication in the corporate world. Most recently he had founded Progressive Church Media which develops media resources for progressive, accepting and affirming congregations. An increasing number of progressive-minded churches are using video and multimedia to make their worship services more engaging and seeker-friendly. Until now, the options for these churches to obtain high-quality video resources generally meant they had to purchase content from companies and organizations that do not necessarily share their theological views and beliefs. But Progressive Church Media is here to change that. Each webinar is $9.99. If you register for all four, you get four webinars for the price of three at $29.97. Register here! __________________________ Taking Your Church to the Next Level: Where Do You Want to Go? Opportunities to Support Immigration Reform
|
Currently, the bill dealing with immigration reform is STUCK in committee in the House of Representatives. We can do several things to help move this. Very importantly, call your Congressional Representative and request that the bill reach the floor of the House. To do this, simply Google the name of your representative to obtain the phone number and call and ask them to vote the bill onto the floor of the House and to support family friendly immigration reform.
Secondly, show your support of immigration reform by attending a prayer vigil and rally to be held nationwide on October 5, 2013. In Minneapolis a prayer vigil is set for that day at 12:30 at the Basilica of St. Mary's with a march to the Hennepin County Government Center to follow.
Another step that we on the MN Conference Immigration Team would strongly encourage is for your church or cluster of churches to invite the Immigration Team to share information about the UCC's resolutions on immigration, the Biblical mandate regarding immigrants, the nature of the bill being considered, the reasons that immigrants are here and what they add to our country.
Contact Immigration Team Chair, Susie George at susiemg7@yahoo.com for more information or to set up date to meet with your congregation.

Gold Fever Screening
|
Justice & Witness Team & Mayflower UCC
to host Gold Fever: Global Screening Day Event
at Riverview Theater Minneapolis
Documentary film screening part of a
worldwide discussion on mining harms
On October 24, Minneapolis will join dozens of communities worldwide to screen Gold Fever, an "eye-opening and inspiring" documentary about the arrival of Goldcorp Inc to a remote Guatemalan village.
The screening, presented by G Project and co-hosted by the Minnesota Conference Justice and Witness Team, Mayflower UCC's Global Justice Advocacy Team, Witness for Peace, and many other organizations will take place at the Riverview Theater in Minneapolis at 7:00pm on October 24. Admission is $10, and the public is welcome. Following the screening of the film, Thom Haines, Executive Director at G Project, will host a discussion of the film.
"We believe that resource extraction is an underreported issue," said Haines. "By hosting a screening of Gold Fever as part of Global Screening Day we hope to shine a light on the harms to health, community and environment brought by transnational industrial mining and the connections to our own communities. As part of a global action, we hope to raise visibility of these issues here in Minnesota and show our support, alongside dozens of other communities worldwide. We are particularly standing in support of the Ecumenical Christian Council of Guatemala, our United Church of Christ partner who is actively engaged in mining resistance."
Dozens of groups, large and small, will screen Gold Fever around the world on or about October 17. For a map and details of the campaign visit: www.goldfevermovie.com/screening-day
