The Conference Minister Search Committee Commends to the Minnesota Conference United Church of Christ

The Reverend Sharon (Shari) Prestemon

Rev. Prestemon received her Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in social work from Luther College (Decorah, IA) in 1989. She served as a Peace and Justice Intern for the United Church of Christ in Dumaguete City, the Philippines in 1990-1991. She was awarded the Master of Divinity degree from Chicago Theological Seminary in 1993 and was ordained that same year. She served two congregations, the first in Wheaton, Illinois and the second in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. She has served as Executive Director of Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, Mississippi since August 2000. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Chicago Theological Seminary, as Vice-Chair of the UCC's Wider Church Ministries Board of Directors, and on the Executive Council of the United Church of Christ. She is a life-long United Church of Christ member.

In her role as Executive Director at Back Bay Mission, Rev. Prestemon has provided management to all aspects of Back Bay Mission operations. Under her leadership, the operations of Back Bay Mission have increased by 500% due to the expansion of existing programs and the launching of several new initiatives, particularly in regards to homelessness and affordable housing. She has provided critical leadership to the Gulf Coast community and her own organization in disaster recovery efforts, after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area in 2005. Prestemon oversaw a substantial reconstruction of the Back Bay Mission campus after losing six of seven previous buildings on its campus to Hurricane Katrina destruction. She is widely regarded in the United Church of Christ as a gifted speaker, visionary leader, and a person of engaged and enduring faith.

Reverend Prestemon is passionate about the responsibility of the Church, communities, and individuals to make a constructive difference in the world, and believes one's faith must be daily expressed in acts of compassionate works, advocacy for justice, and humble service. In her current capacity she has provided essential leadership along the Mississippi Gulf Coast on issues like affordable housing, homelessness, and long-term disaster recovery work, and has served on several local Boards of Directors. She is the founder and President of Gulf Coast Housing Initiatives, a newly birthed organization dedicated to providing affordable housing solutions to low-to-moderate income residents of the area.

Special recognitions include the Reinhold Niebuhr Award for Service by Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis (2007), the Heart of Service Award from Wider Church Ministries - United Church of Christ (2007), and the Alumni of the Year Award from Chicago Theological Seminary (2008). She received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Heidelberg University (Ohio) in May 2010.

Justice and Witness Awards
The Justice and Witness Team offers kudos and thanksgiving to the 14 congregations recognized at this year's Annual Meeting. A collective total of 30 certificates were given in the four recognition categories (Prophetic Voices, Accessibility, Earthwise, Just Peace). This year, to be recognized, a new or updating application had to be submitted. All 2013 honorees (with one known exception) received a certificate of recognition in each of the categories for which they were recognized (or, if not picked up, it was mailed after the meeting).

There have been questions from those receiving 2012 certificates: that was not a mistake, it corrected an oversight from last year when certificates were not awarded. If there are questions or corrections, please contact John Guttermann, intpasj@mac.com

In support of Centro de Trabajadores
Unidos en Lucha
from Rev. John Guttermann, Justice & Witness Team
In 2011, the Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Conference United Church of Christ passed a resolution supporting "CTUL's [Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en Lucha (Center of Workers United in Struggle)] campaign for fair pay, dignified working conditions, and justice in their places of employment. (quote from resolutions summary of intent). The Resolution called for a number of specific supporting actions that were completed by the Conference Minister and your Justice and Witness Team.

CTUL began in 2005 as a project of Workers' Interfaith Network (WIN) with the goal of supporting low-wage workers who are facing workplace issues such as unjust firings or wage theft.  To our knowledge, we are the only state denomination that has formally supported the workers of CTUL.

Since 2011, CTUL has continued organizing and last week marked the beginning of a strike against Target's contract cleaning services. The strike is for better working conditions, wages, and benefits. Unionized workers at Target headquarters are paid nearly $14 per hour plus benefits, while those employed by Target's low wage contract services companies are paid about $8.50 per hour without benefits (source: click here for Huffington Post article).

For more information about the strike and to support the workers: http://ctul.net.

Pride Festival!

Planning for another great year at the Twin Cities Pride Festival is going well, but we could use your help with the following items.

1. The festival organizers are being very strict on parade group size limits this year, and we must walk with no more than 100 people. If your church intends to march, you must send us an estimate of how many people will be attending so we can ensure we don't exceed our limit. Our theme this year is "The United Church of Christ: A History of Love and Inclusion."

2. There are still lots of open slots to fill staffing the booth on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon. If you are interested, please contact us. Your group does not have to be large - one or two people are plenty although more are always welcome.

3. With legal marriage for LGBT couples starting in August, we would like to have information onsite at the Pride Booth regarding clergy, both active and retired, who would be willing to speak with couples about marriage ceremonies and premarital counseling. If you, or if you know another pastor, would like to be included on this list, please email me the following information:
