Mission Bite: from across the Minnesota Conference
Between now and the 2013 Annual Meeting each week's Mission Bites will highlight the work of volunteers as they report on the work of the Program Ministry Teams. The Conference Bylaws state that program ministry teams assist in fulfilling the strategic mission priorities of the Conference and carry out specific programmatic functions. As you will see in the weeks to come, these groups do amazing work and greatly increase our capacity.

P.S. If you haven't already registered for the Annual Meeting, there's no better time to do it! Just visit www.uccmn.org/annualmeeting to register online or to find a downloadable form. Can't wait to see you there!

2012-2013 Faith Formation for Children and Youth Team
from Kiely Todd Roska, chair

One of the Strategic Priorities identified by the Minnesota Conference is Faith formation for all: Minnesota Conference members are well-equipped to grow in faith throughout their lifetime.

The Faith Formation Team provides leadership for the Minnesota Conference as we strive to fully welcome people of all ages into a life of Christian Discipleship. The Team helps to host events and provide resources to congregational leaders of all ages across the Conference. Our mission is to equip people in congregations across the Minnesota Conference to do meaningful ministry with young people and their families so that people have opportunities to practice discipleship in meaningful ways.

This year, the Faith Formation Team worked with Kristina Lizardy-Hajbi, Minister for Christian Faith Formation Research in the National Setting of the UCC. Kristina spent the past year researching quality faith formation practices. We wanted to combine her wisdom and research with our work in the Minnesota Conference. Together, we developed a list of 5 markers of quality faith formation practices in congregations. These marks are not meant an exhaustive list; they are meant to help start conversation in congregations of all sizes about to best integrate quality faith formation practice into the all ministry areas. It is also understood that these practices will take different forms in different congregations. We are calling these the "Faith Forming 5."

  • Children and Youth Participate in Worship
  • At Home Faith Practices
  • Intergenerational Ministry
  • Service and Mission with Theological Reflection
  • Lay and Clergy Leadership Development

There will be additional information and a workshop about the "Faith Forming 5" at the Annual Meeting.

Some of the ways the Faith Formation team, the Associate Conference Minister for Faith Formation, and the Ashley Endowment have supported Faith Formation across the Conference:

  • "Fourth Thursdays:" The Conference hosts gatherings for adult leaders in congregations. At these gatherings, speakers share from their experiences and provide written resources. The gatherings are also a time for people to network and share ideas with one another.
  • Conference Youth Events: Each year, the Conference hosts four weekend-long youth events (two for Middle School Youth and two for High School Youth). These events provide an opportunity for young people to come together from across the Conference for a weekend of worship, leadership development, and learning about a particular topic.
  • Certification School for Progressive Christian Youth Ministry: Working collaboratively with the Iowa Conference UCC, United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities, and Vibrant Faith Ministries, the Conference has organized an intensive leadership development training program for adults working with young people. Over the past few years, 21 people have participated in Certification School. The resources and insights gained during Certification School has transformed and inspired the faith formation work in several congregations across the Conference.
  • Micro Grants: For the past several years, the Conference has designated some of the money from the Ashley Endowment to be given directly to congregations in the form of small grants. These grants encourage intergenerational ministry and provide support for creative mission work.
  • Connections with the National UCC: The Conference provides resources and support for youth to attend General Synod and the UCC National Youth Events. In addition, we work collaborative to fund and create resources that benefit the whole UCC.
Part of the Faith Formation Team's work includes making recommendations to the Minnesota Conference Board of Directors about how to spend the annual allocation from the Ashley Endowment. We are continually grateful for the generosity of Floyd and Elsie Ashley, whose endowment has provided the opportunity to re-envision our Faith Formation ministry in the Minnesota Conference.

We welcome your prayers, your support, and your ideas for our ministry.

Peace Fund Grants

Peace Fund Grants are for growing the mission and ministry capability of Conference congregations and members, and for adding to the justice-prophetic mission capacity of congregation or individual applicants. Here's an update on the Fund.

In implementing the Prophetic Voices campaign approved by the 2012 Annual Meeting, the Justice and Witness Team promotes training organizers within the Conference. The Team recently approved the first "organizer training" grant. A grant to First UCC Northfield will help three of their members attend week-long organizer training this summer. We celebrate this action in implementing the Conference Justice Core Value of "serving with compassion and advocating with passion [in seeking] a more just and peaceful world."

Three other recent grants went to young church leaders - Aaron Lauer, Rev. Alison Killeen, and Laura Beth Gatzke - to attend Ecumenical Advocacy Day training in Washington, D.C. They met with leaders from other denominations around the country to discuss and practice advocacy on hunger.

A shining star Earthwise congregation, a model in stewardship of creation and wise and efficient use of energy, St Paul's UCC, St Paul, received a grant that along with rebates will allow them to complete a controls program to minimize its carbon footprint through reducing fossil fuel consumption. Way to go St Paul's!

Here's where you can find out more about contributing to the Peace Fund and seeking grants from the Fund

A Resolution to Divest from Fossil Fuel Companies
Our Treasure/Our Heart, Our Ethics, ...
from Dwight Wagenius and Rev. John Guttermann,
Co-Chairs, Justice & Witness Team
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" -Matthew 6:21, Luke 12:34

The buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is changing our climate and will wreck our economy. Our responses must include divestment from fossil fuel companies.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently announced that in May carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere surpassed 400 parts-per-million (PPM). This amount is far above the 350 PPM that the world's governments agree is the safe long-term upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The rate of increase in CO2 concentrations has increased for decades, from 0.7 PPM annually in the 1950s to 2.1 PPM over the past decade. We humans are the primary contributors. Eduardo Porter in his New York Times Economic Scene column last week noted that this is the "highest level in at least three million years, before humans appeared on the scene... The milestone puts the earth nearer a point of no return, many scientists think, when vast, disruptive climate change is baked into our future."

People of faith are called to end our own participation in extracting, processing and burning fossil fuels by divestment. Carbon-based investment is imprudent from a faith-based and ethical perspective. It is also imprudent from a financial perspective.

In his examination of climate change economics, former Chief Economist of the World Bank Sir Nicholas Stern said in 2007's The Stern Review (available for purchase here):

"No one can predict the consequences of climate change with complete certainty; but we now know enough to understand the risks. Mitigation - taking strong action to reduce emissions - must be viewed as an investment.... If these investments are made wisely, the costs will be manageable, and there will be a wide range of opportunities for growth and development along the way (emphasis added; click for source)."

In support of this view, new World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, quoted in a recent  Guardian article, said, "We have to find climate-friendly ways of encouraging economic growth. The good news is we think they exist. There is a lot of money to be made in building the technologies and bending the arc of climate change."

The divestment resolution is part of bending the arc toward both justice and a future economy that will support our children and grandchildren.

You can read the resolution and FAQ document here. If you have questions, comments, or would like additional resources, or a speaker on the resolution, contact the Justice & Witness Team at mnconfjusticewitnessteam@gmail.com
Organizer Training and Grants!
Prophetic Voices - Organizer Training & Grants
from Rev. John Guttermann, Justice & Witness Team

Hone your Prophetic Voice skills by becoming a trained faith based organizer. This year's ISAIAH-PICO training is Sunday, August 11 through Friday, August 16, 2013 at the Mankato City Center Hotel, 101 E Main St,  Mankato, MN. It is best if congregations send at least two people. For more information and to register, click here. You are not required to become an ISAIAH-MN congregation in order to participate in this training. In addition, as part of your Minnesota Conference Prophetic Voices initiative, your Justice and Witness Team offers grant money that can cover all or a part of the training. For a short form grant application, click here.

Consider, too, attending an organizer training program at the Midwest Academy (click for more information).

Both trainings are excellent: for information about some differences, contact Rev. John Guttermann, 651 485-3104;  intpasj@mac.com.
