Mission Bite: from across the Minnesota Conference
Between now and the 2013 Annual Meeting each week's Mission Bites will highlight the work of volunteers as they report on the work of the Program Ministry Teams. The Conference Bylaws state that program ministry teams assist in fulfilling the strategic mission priorities of the Conference and carry out specific programmatic functions. As you will see in the weeks to come, these groups do amazing work and greatly increase our capacity.

P.S. If you haven't already registered for the Annual Meeting, there's no better time to do it! Register before May 6 to grab the early registration discount - you'll save $30! Just visit www.uccmn.org/annualmeeting to register online or to find a downloadable form. Can't wait to see you there!

2012 Global Partnerships Team
from Rev. Kathy Nelson, convener

"God bestows upon us the Holy Spirit, creating and renewing the church of Jesus Christ, binding in covenant faithful people of all ages, tongues, and races."

In our statement of faith we are reminded that the building of the Church - and global partnership - is not our work alone, but work that God calls us to and that we do with God.

Our particular expression of the global church this past year has been our partnership with the South East Mindanao Jurisdiction of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines and supporting our missionaries, Don and Maryjane Westra and Tom and Monica Liddle

Janoras and Bauer We have been very busy this year working with all our partners in mission. In May and June we hosted Rev. Ruth C. Janoras - UCCP NDDC Conference Minister (pictured at right with Rev. Tara Bauer). She was with us at our Annual Meeting, sharing in workshops and with the whole gathering. She also visited through out the state. We learned a great deal from her about the struggles and joys of the UCCP congregations and their work for justice. We were deeply disappointed that Bishop Villasanto and Hazel Navarro both had their travel visas denied and so were not able to visit us.

Five members of our team will be participating in a Global Immersion Trip in June of 2013 with Dr. Eleazar Fernadez of United Theological Seminary. Going on this trip with Eleazar are Glen Herrington Hall, Karen Evenson, Tom Liddle and Kathy Nelson. We will be open to sharing our experiences and learnings with you as we return. These visits are so important as we deepen our partnership and our learning.

In June we had another opportunity for learning as Don and Mary Jane Westra were home to share stories from their 3 years as missionaries in Zimbabwe. They returned to Zimbabwe in November to serve another 3 years but were forced to leave to seek new work visas in January. They are still home, hoping that these come through for them. We continue to support the work of Mt. Selinda Mission and Hospital and pray for resolution so they can return.

Tom and Monica finished their three years in East Timor in June. They shared their experiences in East Timor with many of our congregations also. Tom is now enrolled at Luther Theological Seminary where he will pursue his MDiv degree and be ordained within the United Church of Christ. But the connection to East Timor is strong with Amena Cristovao (pictured at left) now living with the Liddles as she studies. Amena is a young woman who has worked at Clinic Imanuel since 2009. She was responsible for the clinic's simple laboratory, where she performs malaria smears, sputum smears for TB, and basic urine tests. She was also responsible for providing care for TB patients, which includes providing daily medicines, weight checks, and follow-up care. She is hoping this fall to begin her studies as a Laboratory Technician at Lake Superior College in Duluth. She will live with members of Peace UCC.

We see our work on the Global Partnership team as multi-dimensional.

To be in Global Partnership we strive to:

  1. PRAY regularly for our partners, missionaries and the world.
  2. EDUCATE our congregation members about global issues from preschool age to adult.
  3. SEEKS JUSTICE for the "least of these" in the international community.
  4. RECEIVE the gifts of the global church.
  5. GIVE to the work of global mission.
  6. SEND our members into the world to experience and share the Good News.
  7. GROW in sharing the story of God's mission with others.
Thanks all to the members and friends of the Minnesota Conference who continue to support the work of global partnership in many of these ways.

Respectfully Submitted

Rev. Kathryn Nelson, Chair

Working to prevent gun violence

The Time is Now to Address Gun Violence

from Rev. Eliot Howard, pastor, Linden Hills UCC, Minneapolis

Within the next couple of weeks, the Minnesota legislature will have a chance to vote to expand gun background checks here. The U.S. Senate has failed to expand gun background checks, but we can still make our communities safer here in Minnesota.

Here's how you can most effective in helping to get legislation passed:
On Monday, April 29, from 6:00 to 8:30 pm, join in a phone bank for gun safety. This evening of phone banking is being sponsored by several churches, including Linden Hills UCC. We hope members of UCC congregations will join in the phoning. Calls will be made from TakeAction Minnesota, 705 Raymond Ave. Suite 100, St. Paul, MN 55114. Calls will be centered upon voters in rural Minnesota who care about preventing gun violence, asking them to contact their representatives. A light supper will be provided. Don't like making phone calls? You're not alone, but we can make a big difference by prompting voters who already believe in the cause to contact their legislators and urge their support. Constituent calls are the most effective influence on legislator votes. And the calling list is made up of people who already believe in common-sense gun control measures. The time on the phones will be about 90 minutes. We are encouraged by the fact that legislators who have never received calls in favor of sensible gun safety measures are receiving calls this year. If you would like further information, contact Eliot Howard at 612-597-5533 or [email protected].
A Resolution to Divest from Fossil Fuel Companies
A Resolution to Divest from Fossil Fuel Companies: The Golden Rule
We live out God's inclusive love by following the basic moral instruction of our scripture (Mark 12.31, Matthew 22.39, Luke 10.27, Leviticus 19.18) and all world religions-the call to love our neighbors as ourselves. We keep our covenant with God when we acknowledge that our actions now have significant consequences for future generations who are as much our neighbors as those who live next door to us today. Perhaps this is "the Golden Rule 2.0."

On one hand, climate change is about climate, not weather. On the other hand, extreme weather events, like drought, like an aberrationally cold spring, are a strong reminder that we need to act now to avoid climate catastrophe. The fossil fuel industry plans that we burn five times more carbon dioxide than we can emit and still keep global warming below the 2 degrees Centigrade target that countries have agreed to meet. We have the solutions necessary to prevent climate catastrophe, but the fossil fuel industry spends millions annually to spread misinformation about climate change, warp the political process, and block clean alternatives. We shouldn't be investing our money in companies that are wrecking the planet we live on. Divestment is an effective way to weaken the power of the fossil fuel industry and open up political space for change, change that will benefit us and future generations.

You can read the resolution and FAQ document here. If you have questions, comments, or would like additional resources, or a speaker on the resolution, contact the Justice & Witness Team at [email protected].
From the Mission 4/1 Earth LinK Event
United We Stand for One Earth

As part of the 4-1-Earth UCC initiative, the national office of the United Church of Christ hosted a Leaders in Koinonia (LinK) event in Cleveland. The purpose was to bring lay and clergy leaders together with national directors and staff around the issue of climate change and eco-justice.

From L to R: Teddie Potter, Rev. Gretchen Deeg, Rev. Amy Wick Moore, Rev. Tim Johnson in front of a local, sustainable eatery in Cleveland
Rev. Tim Johnson from Cherokee Park United Church, Rev. Amy Wick Moore from New Brighton UCC, Rev. Gretchen Deeg from Mayflower UCC, and Teddie Potter from Mayflower UCC attended representing the Minnesota Conference. In addition, Hannah Campbell Gustafson a Mayflower member and seminary student at University of Chicago School of Divinity attended representing seminary students. All told, there were 64 representatives from around the nation and other countries. Attendees flew in from as far away as Hawaii, China, and Palestine. The common thread was our passion for eco-justice and sustainable living for all creation.

On a tour of a bike co-op in Cleveland
The three-day conference included inspiring talks by activist leaders at home and abroad. We had heart-felt conversations about both the problems and possible solutions. What became readily apparent was that around the globe we are all seeing tangible signs of global climate change and environmental degradation. Each of us came away with new insights and a resolved commitment to be leaders for change. Here are some of our observations:

To become a church known for responding boldly to climate change we need to boldly claim an earth-centered theology, which permeates all we do. We need to respond with all our energy and power to the climate change crisis, which threatens all we do and all we care about. - Rev. Gretchen Deeg

Mira Rizeq speaks to the LinK group.
Mira Rizeq described the severe water shortage and resource inequities being experienced by Palestinians and this is Tim Johnson's related reflection. The story Mira told was one familiar to the small delegation of voices representing people of color. They too had their own stories how exploitation of the earth had a particularly adverse impact on populations of color. Part of the question the conference raised is will we be able to listen to these voices so that together we might find common cause in the urgency of the moment in addressing the needs of the earth, which sustains us all. - Rev. Tim Johnson

I was struck by the universal expression of deep grief and loss over what's happening to God's creation. When you hear one story about environmental degradation it is sad. When you hear a similar story several times, it is tragic. When you hear common threads from all over the globe, the call to action cannot be ignored. More than any other time we are called to manifest the UNITED Church of Christ as we attempt to take on global climate change and champion eco-justice for all God's creation. - Teddie Potter

Worship in the Amistad Chapel
In the end, we concluded that eco-justice is a container issue that gives shape and volume to other justice issues. A transit system is a good example: What is good for us is good for all of us, God's creation included. If we have good sidewalks, bike paths, and bike lanes so that we can bike to work and the coffee shop and the grocery store this is good for the earth and us. If we have buses so that those who don't have cars or the ability to drive them can get to work and the grocery store, etc. this is good for everyone, including God's creation. We are all in this together, every part of creation, humans included. What is just for the earth is just for us as well. - Rev. Amy Wick Moore

I feel that the most important thing I have received from this gathering is a renewed sense of hope. I have already felt the urgent call, but feel renewed in hopefulness, and am so grateful for the ways in which that will impact my work going forward. I have been reminded that I am not alone. - Hannah Campbell Gustafson

And neither are we. The Minnesota Conference has long been a national leader in eco-justice and climate change activism. We can offer the rest of the denomination a model of united strength and purpose. For God is still speaking... and we are sill listening.
