Updated College Guide Available
The 2013-2014 print edition of SCICU's popular College Guide is available to students, parents, school counselors and anyone interested in learning more about the 20 private non-profit colleges and universities that are members of SCICU. The initial distribution to high schools, SCICU trustees, and members of the General Assembly was mailed last week.
The College Guide includes a concise statement on the benefits of a liberal arts education and a discussion of the cost of attendance as a value proposition. The publication features 2-page profiles of the member colleges and universities, a list of visitation days, and detailed information on federal and state student financial assistance. To emphasize the core principles of teaching and learning on our members' wonderfully diverse campuses, the Guide features the 20 recipients of SCICU's 2013 Excellent in Teaching Award.
The digital edition of the College Guide will be available on SCICU's website within the next two weeks. In addition to hot links, page-flippers, enhanced navigation tools, and videos, the new digital edition will be formatted for iPhones, iPads, Androids, and other Smart (HTML5) platforms - the social media world of today's students and a growing number of their parents.
SCICU is grateful for this year's sponsors: American Student Assistance, Duke Energy, SallieMae, Slice Media, South Carolina Student Loan, and Wells Fargo.

Trustees to Meet October 1
The SCICU Board of Trustees will meet at 10:30 a.m. on October 1 at Anderson University. Standing committees have been meeting during the past several weeks preparing their year-end reports for this annual meeting.
In addition to the election of new trustees and officers, trustees will be presented with financial reports for the endowments and for the organization's operations for the fiscal year ending August 31. The Board also will be asked to approve the 2013-2014 budget and new fundraising goals.
Following the business meeting, a luncheon will be held to recognize the recipients of the Sterling L. Smith Scholarship and the J. Lacy McLean Student of the Year.
Trustees may register for the meeting on-line in the Events Registration section of the SCICU website. Materials for the meeting and directions will be mailed to each trustee at least one week before the meeting.
SCICU and its members thank the following meeting and luncheon sponsors for their support of independent higher education: ABM Building Services, LLC, American Student Assistance (ASA), Aramark Higher Education, CapinCrouse, LLP, Carroll Campus Development, CSI Leasing, Inc., 401(k) 403(b) Advisors, HRP Associates, Inc., Provista, SchoolDude, Sodexo, Total Comfort Solutions, and Wyche Law Firm.

Summer Lunches Refresh Relationships
A series of lunches held earlier this summer helped to refresh relationships between SCICU staff, community trustees, and college and university presidents. Since formal meetings of the Board of Trustees occur only twice a year, the lunches provided staff with an interim opportunity to brief the trustees and presidents on recent program and legislative developments, highlight campus activities, and connect with one another on both a personal and professional level. More than 30 presidents, board members, and staff attended lunches in Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Greenville, and Columbia.

Constitution Day: September 17
In 2005, Congress passed legislation mandating that educational institutions receiving federal funds (including federal student aid) are to hold an educational program on the U.S. Constitution on September 17 each year.
This day commemorates the September 17, 1787, signing of the Constitution. The federal provision does not define "educational program." This means that colleges and universities have a great deal of latitude in exactly how they choose to recognize the day.
SCICU and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities encourage all of our members to embrace this opportunity to advance civic education. The New York Times Learning Network and the American Democracy Project have posted a detailed Constitution Day Planning Guide which includes programming ideas. Also, see the National Constitution Center's Constitution Day mini-website for more information.
