Welcome, Stephenie Bergen

Stephenie Bergen, a student at Columbia International University, is SCICU's new part-time administrative assistant. A native of Carthage, MO, Stephenie graduated summa cum laude from Missouri Southern State University with BA degrees in English Literature & Writing and in Spanish Language.  She has traveled extensively through Latin America and has future goals to live abroad. Stephenie is a candidate for the Master of Arts degree in Global Studies at CIU.

At SCICU, Stephenie will be responsible for general administrative support for events, publications, and the website. She succeeds Tess Miller who joined SCICU in July 2011.

Presidents Visit Capitol Hill

Presidents Betsy Fleming (Converse College), Jairy Hunter (Charleston
Southern  University), and Cleveland Sellers (Voorhees Coll
ege), along with SCICU President Mike LeFever, recently visited with members of the South

Carolina Congressional delegation to discuss issues such as Pell grants and other campus-based student aid, over-reaching federal regulations, affordability, value, and student debt.

The four presidents were part of Advocacy Day sponsored by the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities as part of the organization's annual meeting in Washington, DC. Private, non-profit college and university presidents from across the country fanned out over Capitol Hill to educate their states' elected officials on the issues most pertinent to the independent higher education community and to remind members of Congress that independent college and university presidents want to remain engaged on the issues and serve as an on-going resource.

Scholars Program Gets Boost

SCE&G and Colonial Life and Accident recently agreed to increase their annual contributions to the SCICU Scholars Program.

SCE&G will fund $1000 scholarships at each of SCICU's 5 historically Black colleges and universities, increasing their total program donation to $20,000. With the addition of a $2000 scholarship, Colonial Life and Accident brings Claflin University in Orangeburg into the circle of Midlands colleges who share in $12,000 of student aid. Both companies have supported independent higher education for more than 50 years.

Career Connections 2013

On January 30, more than 300 students from SCICU member colleges and universities met with 71 employers at Career Connections 2013, SCICU's annual career fair and interview event. The event was hosted at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center by the career services directors and SCICU staff. Independent colleges are known widely in the business community for graduating students with the knowledge, skills, and values that make them outstanding candidates for employment.

Hobcaw Barony, The Belle Baruch Foundation, and SCICU

Since 1964, the Belle W. Baruch Foundation has owned and operated Hobcaw Barony as a center for education and research. Hobcaw Barony is the largest piece of protected property on the east coast of the United States. Between Georgetown and Charleston lie 60 miles of shoreline that is operated either by private, state, or federal organizations for conservation. Both USC and Clemson University maintain laboratories on the property available for use by SCICU member independent colleges and their students. The Baruch Foundation has been a long-time contributor to the SCICU Undergraduate Faculty/Student Research Program, and SCICU Life Trustees W. Hayne Hipp, Hugh C. Lane, Jr., and Minor Mickel Shaw currently serve on the governing board of the foundation.

Students or faculty wanting to do field research at Hobcaw Barony may contact SCICU's Brenda Torrence at brenda@scicu.org
