The South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees held its annual meeting on October 11 at Benedict College in Columbia. At the Awards Luncheon following the meeting, SCICU recognized two outstanding students.

Allie Jo Shipman, a senior at Presbyterian College, is the 2012-2013 J. Lacy McLean Scholarship recipient and the Independent College Student of the Year. The award is presented annually by the South Carolina Independent Colleges & Universities and includes a $2,000 scholarship. Click here to read more about Ms. Shipman and her award.

Natasha Rudy, a junior at Wofford College, is the Sterling L. Smith Scholarship recipient for 2012-2013. The award is presented annually by the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities to a student who qualifies for a Higher Education Tuition Grant and includes a $1,000 scholarship. Each year, the students are chosen from a pool of applicants from SCICU's 20 member colleges and universities. The Center for Scholarship Administration in Greenville selects the scholarship recipients.
Colonial Life and NBSC were honored at the luncheon for their 50 years of continuous support of independent higher education in South Carolina. They join 10 other companies who have supported SCICU for more than 50 years.

Receiving the award for NBSC was Sara Fisher, NBSC senior executive vice president and COO and immediate past chair of the Board of Trustees. Randy Horn, president and CEO of Colonial Life and chair of the Development Committee, will receive his award at a later date.
The UPS Educational Foundation, administered by the Council for Independent Colleges, was recognized for providing more than $1 million in scholarships to students attending independent colleges and universities in South Carolina. In 2012, the Foundation awarded SCICU $36,000 to fund 15 scholarships in the amount of $2400 each. Nationwide, since its inception, the UPS Educational Endowment has awarded more than $50 million in scholarships to over 16,000 students.

Board Elects 9 New Trustees; Re-elects 8
The SCICU Board of Trustees elected 9 new members at its annual meeting on October 11 at Benedict College. Board Chair Henri Etta Baskins notes, "These individuals bring extensive experience, knowledge, and commitment to our organization's mission, which is to advance independent higher education in South Carolina."

Dr. Evans Whitaker to Chair the Presidents Council
Dr. Evans Whitaker of Anderson University was elected to a two-year term as chair of the SCICU Presidents Council and vice chair of the SCICU Board of Trustees. He succeeds Dr. Betsy Fleming, president of Converse College.
Joining Dr. Whitaker on the Executive Committee are presidents Dr. Colleen Keith of Spartanburg Methodist College, Dr. David Swinton of Benedict College, and Dr. Todd Voss of Southern Wesleyan University. They replace Dr. Jimmy Epting of North Greenville University, Dr. Cleveland Sellers of Voorhees College, and Dr. Robert Wyatt of Coker College who completed their terms on August 31.

Baskins Appoints Committee Chairs

Henri Etta Baskins, SCICU Board of Trustees Chair, appointed Randy Horn, Tricia Whitener, and Terrence Roberts to chair standing committees. Horn, president and CEO of Colonial Life, will chair the Development Committee. Whitener, a principal with the law firm of Whitener & Wharton, will chair the Finance Committee. Roberts, mayor of Anderson and owner of a State Farm Insurance agency, will repeat as chair of the Public Policy Committee. Ms. Baskins is the executive director of the Greater Columbia Human Relations Council.
The three committee chairs will join the Trustee officers and the representatives of the Presidents Council to form the Executive Committee. Chair-elect Kathy McKinney, a shareholder with Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, and Sara Fisher, senior executive vice president and COO of the National Bank of South Carolina, the Board's immediate past chair, are the other officers on the Executive Committee.

10 Leave Board with Distinguished Service
Ten Trustees with more than 50 years of combined service completed their terms of office at the end of the fiscal year on August 31, 2012. The Trustees were recognized by their peers for their commitment and contributions to SCICU and independent higher education.

Peers Honor CIU's Bob Kallgren

The late Bob Kallgren was honored by SCICU's Institutional Research Affinity Group at a special awards luncheon on September 21. Kallgren, who served at Columbia International University for 39 years before his death in 2011, was CIU's vice president for institutional effectiveness. Bob was CIU's representative to the IR Group and served as its chair and inspiration for many years.
Don Pierce of Furman University remembered Bob Kallgren as an encourager who had not only a "can do spirit," but more importantly, "a can do for others spirit."
To honor the memory of Bob Kallgren, the Institutional Research Affinity Group created the Robert C. Kallgren Memorial Chair recognizing Bob's "untiring service to advancing the ideals of higher education and Christian faith."
The honor included a glass, stand-up plaque that was presented to Kallgren's widow Judy, his sons Rob and Tim, and his daughter-in-law, Rebecca by SCICU President and CEO Mike LeFever.

U.S. Department of Education Awards Nearly $228 Million to HBCUs
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in 19 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands will be able to strengthen their academic resources, financial management systems, endowment-building capacity, and physical plants as a result of a $227.9 million grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education today.
The five-year grants-Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities-will include activities such as curriculum reform, counseling and student service programs, establishing teacher education programs designed to qualify students to teach; acquiring real-estate property in connection with construction, renovations, or additions that may improve campus facilities, and funding faculty and staff development. In addition, funds may be used for the purchase, rental, or lease of scientific or laboratory equipment and the development of academic instruction in disciplines in which African Americans are underrepresented.
Eight HBCUs in South Carolina, including 5 SCICU members, received close to $15 million in grants.
