Introduction to Business Research

Are you thinking of starting a small business? Start here.
This hands-on class is an introduction to business resources and research at the Free Library.
We will discuss:
- Introduction to small business books and databases
- The importance of NAICS / SIC and how to find the number that applies to your business
- Pennsylvania/Philadelphia business resources
- Other local resources
There will be time at the end of the program to familiarize yourself with the print and online resources.
A Free Library card and basic computer skills are a prerequisite.
Space is limited to 12 people per class. Tickets are available 30 minutes before class begins in the lobby of the library.You must show your Free Library card in order to receive a ticket.
The three part series, Business Plan Toolkit, will be offered next month, Tuesdays, October 6th, 13th, and 20th.

- How to use census data to develop the demographic portion of a business plan, choose a location for a business and measure business competition
- The differences between Decennial Census Data and the American Community Survey
- Other types of business data such as County/Zip Code Business Patterns
- How to maneuver within the Census.gov and American Fact Finder websites to access Census data
Attendees are invited to follow along on their laptop provided they have a library card and pin number prior to the event. Please note, power sources and technical support will NOT be provided.
The speaker is Noemi Mendez. She is a Data Dissemination Specialist at the United States Census Bureau's Philadelphia Regional Office. Before joining the Philadelphia Regional Office in 2005, Noemi worked as a geographer at Census Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland in the Geographic Standards and Criteria Branch (GSCB).

Business Insights Global: This database allows users to research potential investments, providing company and industry financial reports (including many SWOT reports), fundamentals analysis, and dashboard overviews on a wide range of businesses.
Morningstar.com Library Edition: An investment research center which allows users to screen companies, funds and markets. This is a comprehensive database which screens international stocks, bonds, and funds and utilizing internal rating guidelines and analysis. Morningstar is very useful for finding potential investments and tracking current investments, but it also includes a moderate number of tutorials and tools for how to create and manage investment portfolios.
Standard & Poor's Net Advantage: S&P's NetAdvantage offers financial research, data and analysis on stocks and bonds, credit rating, and financial education. The homepage includes easily accessible stock picks, market snapshots, and current industry information, as well as company, fund and bond screeners.
Value Line: Value Line offers research on stocks, investment education, up to date news articles on stock market and individual companies. Go to "Browse Research" > "Library Elite" to locate stock list. This database offers a unique daily update of the stock market which analyzes trends and their impacts on the market throughout the day.
