Maximizing Your American Experience: Life Stories of Succeeding in a Foreign Environment

James Chan, an independent business consultant who came to study in America in 1971, will give an inspirational talk on how he transformed himself from a shy, clueless foreign student and immigrant into becoming a management consultant advising Fortune 500 companies.
He will recount personal stories of hardships, self-discovery and psychological transformations that enabled him to succeed against daunting odds. He will offer insights on his S.P.A.R.E approach toward self-invention to help you maximize your American experience and learn to succeed in a foreign environment.
James will bring copies of his book, Spare Room Tycoon: Succeeding Independently, the 70 Lessons of Sane Self-Employment. This talk will benefit small business owners, new immigrants and people who feel that their lives are in limbo.

This hands-on class is an introduction to business resources and research at the Free Library.
We will discuss:
- Introduction to small business books and databases
- The importance of NAICS / SIC and how to find the number that applies to your business
- Pennsylvania/Philadelphia business resources
- Other local resources
There will be time at the end of the program to familiarize yourself with the print and online resources.
A Free Library card and basic computer skills are a prerequisite.
Space is limited to 12 people per class. Tickets are available 30 minutes before class begins in the lobby of the library.You must show your Free Library card in order to receive a ticket.

Trademark Basics: What Every Small Business Should Know Now, Not Later

Presenter Craig Morris, from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, will discuss:
- Why it's important for any new business to select a trademark that will be both federally registrable and legally protectable, highlighting factors critical when choosing a mark
- The importance of doing a complete search and whether an attorney should be used
- What may happen if another trademark owner believes it has stronger rights in a mark and issues a "cease-and-desist" letter
- What the USPTO does in the federal registration process and how to avoid scams perpetrated by companies which request fees for services not required by the USPTO

Mr. Child specializes in Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law. The next free consultations will take place in the afternoon and evening of Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at the Parkway Central Library.

The American Society of Inventors
The American Society of Inventors is a 55 year old Philadelphia non-profit organization that helps its area members free of charge with invention reviews, invention evaluations and assistance, a free speaker presentation series, and community events and meetings.
