Because Business is Another Language

Wednesday, April 8th, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Parkway Central Library, Room 108

1901 Vine Street, 19103

Vocabulary is how we communicate with one another.  We judge people's knowledge and expertise by their command of subject-specific language.  Articles about lingo and slang are usually negative in tone and describe "domain-specific" language as exclusionary. However, lingo and jargon are the verbal shorthand of a "discourse community" - and that is good.

This program will summarize the steps associated with "how-to-learn" the language of the workplace, and will also identify the pitfalls of ignoring this very human process.  The goal of this program is to help attendees build linguistic confidence and provide them with actionable information that will prepare them for a lifetime of learning.

Carol Heiberger, author of the ExecuSpeak DictionaryŽ, has parlayed her Wharton MBA and experience in technical industries into books, e-books, and apps to support the language learning needs of people who continue to learn.  Carol Heiberger has done extensive research on language acquisition, neuroscience, and linguistic principles to uncover useful and practical insights for the business community.
