The Centennial Collection in the Business, Science & Industry Department

Philadelphia served as host to the "International Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures and Products of the Soil and Mine" during the Centennial year of 1876. Better known to history as the Centennial Exhibition, it "celebrated 100 years of American cultural and industrial progress" and was the first major World's Fair held in the United States.

The Centennial Exhibition introduced America as a "new industrial world power" and Philadelphia as an icon of industry and culture. Today, print and digital materials from the exhibition are highly valuable for business and industry research. One may use materials from the Centennial Collection to research company histories, the history of manufacturing in Philadelphia and the United States, the steel industry, trade associations, inventions and inventing, titans of industry, finance, and more.

Please visit the Centennial Exhibition Digital Collection website for more information on the exhibition and collection at the Free Library of Philadelphia.
