Boy Scouts Team up with RI DEM for the Rhode Island Great Outdoor Pursuit this Summer
Last weekend local Scouts taught hundreds of families basic knot tying skills and provided information on how to join Scouting at the Rhode Island Great Outdoor Pursuit event at Lincoln Woods. This summer the Scouts have teamed up with RI DEM to participate in their four Outdoor Pursuit events, and will also host two of the events open to the public on July 2 & July 30 at Camp Champlin in Cranston, RI.
The RI Great Outdoor Pursuit is a great opportunity to introduce members of the community to Scouting and it's program of leadership development, character building, and outdoor adventure. We at the Narragansett Council; are thrilled to be partnering with RI DEM as we continue to reach out to the community in new ways.
The goal of the Great Outdoor Pursuit is to get families outdoors and enjoying the state's natural resources. Families form a team with a minimum of two people, one adult and one child, and participate in up to seven "pursuits" over the 12-week period. At each pursuit, teams will decode clues and participate in free and low-cost activities during an event that also includes music, food, environmental and health-related exhibits, as well as free raffles and samples.
The next event, "Navigating the Great Outdoors," takes place Sunday, June 22, at Pulaski Memorial State Park, 151 Pulaski Road in Chepachet.
"Oceans of Fun" is Pursuit 3 on Sunday, July 27, when teams can choose to visit one of the following: Roger Wheeler State Beach, 100 Sand Hill Cove Road, Narragansett; Scarborough State Beach (North), 970 Ocean Road, Narragansett; or Misquamicut State Beach, 257 Atlantic Ave. in Westerly.
The grand finale is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9, when Pursuit 4, "Camping in the Wilderness," takes teams to Burlingame State Campground, on Route 1 in Charlestown, for a free overnight camp.
