We do an excellent good job of getting the word out about joining Scouting each fall when boys return to school. Flyers go into backpacks, Packs and Troops set up displays at back-to-school nights and yard signs pop up all over town. With all the fun activities, programs and camps that our Council offers over the summer, why wouldn't you want to do the same this spring?
Boys who will be in first grade in September can begin Tiger Cubs on June 1, and now is a great time to identify parents who can catch the excitement and start organizing a new den. Plan a couple meetings to help the boys earn their Bobcat badges before the end of June and then participate in Cub Scout Day Camp and a pack picnic, and the boys can earn the Summertime Pack Award or the Cub Scout Outdoors Award at the very first meeting in September.
The best part is that the leaders can take online training over the summer and have time to work with their unit leadership and commissioner in planning an exciting Scouting program.
Spring recruiting isn't just for Cub Scouts though. Boy Scout open houses are a great way to encourage our Scouts to share the fun and excitement. A Troop open house can be as simple as taking a normal Troop meeting and adding some pizzazz, and then using that as a recruitment event to invite new boys to attend so they can learn what Scouting is all about.
