This local favorite is also our most popular pancake mix, and is finding its way to breakfast tables across the United States. We blend our graham flour with other wholesome, natural ingredients. Paul Drumm Jr. developed this recipe in the early seventies, and it soon soared in sales to be the third best selling Kenyon's item.

In the nineties, Paul Drumm III developed the Oat & Honey Pancake Mix and the father/son competition began. Buttermilk & Honey still remains number three...simply delicious pancakes! We encourage you to take a bite before you smother them with butter and maple syrup.

Choose Genuine Stone Ground Ingredients for Your Holiday Recipes

When you cook for family and friends, you want the healthiest and finest ingredients. At Kenyon's Grist Mill, we only offer the best. Our stone ground products can be used in endless recipes. For example, our four types of corn meal (white, yellow, blue, and red) can be substituted in any recipe that calls for cornmeal. We also have a variety of mixes and flours. Stone ground products are much healthier than steel ground products, because the vital quality and nutrition of the grain is preserved. Although the modern steel grinding process is much faster, the grain is usually sprayed with a pesticide to lengthen its shelf life. It is then processed through a series of rollers that strip the grain's layers, removing the outer layer first and then several layers of bran. The next step is the removal of the very important, but oily germ. Once removed, the remaining portion, the endosperm (center portion of the grain) is ground under steel friction producing a tremendous amount of heat. This heat cooks out the nutrients and minerals. After being ground and sieved several times, it becomes a highly refined flour. Often times, the flour is "Enriched" by adding various lost nutrients and it is reconstituted to make a "Whole Grain". Steel ground grain can be legally called, "Stone Ground" if it passed through any type of stone during this process. At Kenyon's Grist Mill, all whole grains are passed through our genuine granite millstones that were quarried from Westerly, RI. This traditional, single-pass process causes little or no temperature increase and produces some of the most outstanding meals and flours available today. Taste the difference! Grist for the Mill

It has been a busy year with many new projects. This past weekend, the Big E (Eastern Exposition) in West Springfield, MA, marked the end of this year's fair season. It is always wonderful to see returning customers, friends, employees, and fellow vendors in the Rhode Island Building. It was our 57th year cooking Clam Cakes (made with our stone ground yellow corn meal), chowders, and Johnny Cakes (made with our stone ground white corn meal). As expected, Lightfoot's Pine Soap was very popular again this year! Throughout the summer, we also enjoyed other New England events, such as the Rhode Island National Guard Open House and Air Show, Charlestown Seafood Festival, and Woodstock Fair. Thank you for your continued support, as these fairs help fund our historic site.

The turn of the season is an annual reminder to turn the millstones up and begin sharpening. We look forward to other capital improvement plans, such as installing a new sifter and putting our second set of stones back into commission again.

Queen's River Kayak Company hosted many guests with kayak rentals and scenic trips on the Queen's River, Wood River, and Pawcatuck River during the spring and summer months. This was unquestionably our busiest year yet. We will be open for a few more weeks. To make a reservation, visit www.QueensRiverKayaks.com. At the mill, we also loved welcoming motor coach companies from all over the country. They enjoyed tours, cooking demonstrations, Johnny Cake samples, and scenic views of the river and waterfall.

What is blue and white and red in the middle...with a tassel to hang on a tree? It is the new Kenyon's Johnny Cake box ornament! My Little Town produces a variety of ornaments and collectibles featuring Rhode Island businesses, places, and products. We are always flattered to be recognized as a state icon. Get yours before the holidays! It will be available on our website and in our shop this coming November. You can also visit www.MyLittleTown.com.

Johnny Cake Festival Canceled

We are sad to announce that the 2014 Johnny Cake Festival at Kenyon's Grist Mill has been officially canceled. To ensure the success of this event, our small staff at the mill and two main coordinators begin planning and developing 14 months in advance. It is a monumental project! Over the winter, the Drumm family suffered a tremendous loss of a loved one - Paul Drumm Jr., caretaker of a Rhode Island tradition and owner of Kenyon's Grist Mill since 1971. During a very long and trying time, amidst the most critical planning months, the difficult decision to cancel the festival was made. We hope to re-open the Johnny Cake Festival in 2016 with a big celebration, but there are a few changes that need to take place that will make the event even better. We apologize to all of our fans and friends who look forward to this unique and authentic event. We put so much passion, love, devotion, and time into re-creating it over the years and enjoyed working with and promoting so many wonderful, local businesses. Thank you for your support in the past and your interest in the future - www.JohnnyCakeFestival.com.

Miller's Tale

I am extremely fortunate to have had a father who shared his passion for our small slice of Rhode Island's history and the art of milling. He instilled a commitment to nurturing and preserving Kenyon's Grist Mill and the Rhode Island Johnny Cake. We shared this for over 40 years together as a team. Many people have reached out and told me that they were honored to have met him. His stories, tours, and knowledge, he readily shared. His devotion and kind spirit were unparalleled. My sister and I are proud to call him Dad. There is an obvious sense of loss - a business partner, mentor, father, and best friend. Dad, your commitment and passion have been well received, and now you can enjoy your new endeavor, grinding corn in God's gristmill. I will do my best to carry on and make you proud. I will miss you and thank you!

Sincerely,
Paul Drumm III
