Charles Edenshaw - Organized and Circulated by the Vancouver Art Gallery

On Saturday, September 6, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, Robert Davidson, renowned Haida artist and Charles Edenshaw's great-grandson, will discuss the pivotal role played by Edenshaw in the cultural endurance of the Haida people. View the exhibition Charles Edenshaw before it closes on September 21, 2014 and gain unique insight into the life and legacy of an iconic Canadian artist.

The McMichael Concert Series
Three Concerts. Three Extraordinary Voices.
This fall, the McMichael Concert Series features three of the country's most widely acclaimed female vocalists. Experience the acoustic magic of the Woodland Gallery, take an exhibition tour, enjoy a stroll through the grounds, and have dinner at the Cashew & Clive Cafe, overlooking the Humber Valley. Concerts begin at 8 pm and will be preceded by a musical conversation with the performers at 7:30 pm hosted by Juliet Dunn and Jaymz Bee of JAZZ.FM91. Tours of the collection will be offered each night at 6:30 pm.

Florence K, an accomplished pianist who sings in French, English, and Spanish, has developed a following at home in Québec and on the international music scene, consistently delivering fresh and original material.

An evening of original music, untold stories, and old favourites from the Great American Songbook, previewing Barbra Lica's upcoming album. The concert will feature Lou Pomanti, producer and pianist; Mark Kelso, drums; Marc Rogers, bass; and Kevin Turcotte, trumpet.

Dubbed "Canada's incomparable vocal-jazz jewel," Emilie-Claire Barlow endears herself to critics, peers, and audiences alike with her polished yet relaxed style, her charming humor, and her unforgettable voice.

ArtVenture - Creativity Without Doors

In these weekly two-hour art classes, children have the opportunity to view the McMichael exhibitions in the galleries and head outdoors to explore and work in the natural environment. Children will develop creative skills while working with a wide range of 2- and 3-dimensional materials and methods in an atmosphere that is fun and rewarding.

September 20 to November 15 (no class October 11), 10 am to 12 pm

Art Explorers, Ages 5 - 7 
Children explore the collection and grounds, while being encouraged to play and create. 
Art Seekers, Ages 8 - 12 
Students explore numerous art media and develop foundational art-making skills. 
Art Apprentices, Ages 8 - 12
Offered to children with previous art-making experience, this program emphasizes composition, design, and the use of professional artist materials. 

September 24 to November 12, 4 to 6 pm
Designed for all skill levels, these classes engage children in progressive projects based on art and nature themes. Children are introduced to various materials and art-making techniques, and are encouraged to experiment over the eight-week session.

Acrylic Landscape Painting, with Ernestine Tahedl
Acrylic Landscape Painting, with Ernestine Tahedl

Saturday, September 20 to Sunday, September 21

10 am to 4:30 pm

Led by Ernestine Tahedl, an internationally known artist and member of the Royal Canadian Academy and Ontario Society of Artists, this acrylic painting workshop will underline the importance of experimentation and cover various techniques that may be applied to landscape compositions. The last afternoon of the workshop will be an opportunity for critique of the work and group discussion. Class size: 15.

Landscape Painting in Killarney Provincial Park with William Rogers

Tuesday, September 30 to Sunday, October 5
Recognized as one of Ontario's painting paradises, Killarney Park has inspired generations of artists, including the Group of Seven's A.Y. Jackson and Franklin Carmichael. This week-long session will provide a unique opportunity to experience Killarney with renowned en plein air watercolour master, William Rogers. Activities will include an introduction to the Park, an evening of sky watching at the observatory, a canoe trip to a sketching location, and a series of hikes. Class size: 15.

Painting Studio - Beginner Class, with Lorne McDermott
Tuesdays, September 9 to October 14 (six classes), 6 to 9 pm
This is an introductory class for those who would like to start painting with acrylics and water-soluble oils, led by popular McMichael instructor Lorne McDermott. Learn about tools and materials used in art making and gain a solid understanding of colour, shading, and composition through skill-building exercises. A list of suggested basic materials will be provided. Class size: 15.

Drawing Studio - Beginner Class with Anna Ballantyne
Wednesdays, September 24 to October 29, 6 to 9 pm
This beginner class will introduce participants to drawing with pencils, water soluble pencils, conté, and charcoal, and address fundamental drawing techniques such as proportion, shape, perspective, shading, value, and highlighting. While developing drawing skills, participants will also explore their creativity. A list of suggested basic materials will be provided. Class size: 15.

Painting En Plein Air with OPAS
Sunday, August 24, 9 am to 5 pm
Members of the Ontario Plein Air Society (OPAS) will set up their easels on the McMichael grounds and paint! Admire their work or try your skills in this friendly competition. Bring your painting materials and register on-site between 9 and 9:30 am. For adults and children who would like an introduction to en plein air techniques, there will be outdoor sketching activities at 12:30 and 2 pm, as well as a special pastel demonstration at 2 pm.
Included with gallery admission. The painting competition is free for OPAS members and $10 for members of the public wishing to register for the competition.

ArtVenture Curates
Sunday, September 14, 11 am to 3 pm
Inspired by the McMichael's incredible art collection and stunning natural landscape, ArtVenture's summer campers will present their artistic creations to family, friends, and visitors. View the exhibition and participate in an art workshop. At 1:30 pm, there will be a special performance by award-winning magician Mike D'Urzo, and at 2 pm he will reveal some tricks of the trade in an interactive magic workshop.
