A Beautiful Mind
I missed the movie, A Beautiful Mind, when it played in the movie theaters but recently had a chance to see it. It tells the story of a brilliant mathematician (John Nash) struggling with his mental balance. I found the proposal to his wife especially interesting:
Nash: "Alicia, does our relationship warrant long-term commitment? I need some kind of proof, some kind of verifiable empirical data."
Alicia: "I'm sorry, just give me a moment to redefine my girlish notions of romance. A proof. Verifiable data. All right, how big is the universe?"
Nash: "Infinite."
Alicia: "How do you know?"
Nash: "I know because all the data indicates it's infinite."
Alicia: "But it hasn't been proven yet. You haven't seen it."
Nash: "No"
Alicia: "Then how do you know for sure?"
Nash: "I don't. I just believe it."
Alicia: "It's the same with love, I guess."
I guess.... it's the same with faith. You just believe!
