Post Easter Thoughts
Now that Christ is risen (Hallelujah!), and death has been defeated, and our eternal destiny with God secure.... let me turn to a more practical matter, namely, living as a follower of Jesus in an America that is in trouble.
A recent sermon on 'the poor' generated a significant response. I said that being poor has less to do with disposable income than with being impoverished in spirit and in mind. I heard from many telling me about how you grew up, without money, but with a strong family that taught you respect, discipline, love for God and country, and a strong work ethic. You didn't have much money, but what you had proved invaluable in helping you to meet life's challenges.
Poverty is not about money as much as it is about the breakdown of the family. Family, the core strength of having loving people to care and pray together, to strengthen and stand by one another in good and hard times, is of far more value than net worth. Yet many of the emails that I received following the sermon expressed a fear that this America is gone, as one person pointedly wrote: "we now live in a welfare state where millions of people have become deprived of a spirit of self respect and reliance, and individual initiative...."
So where do we go from here? How do we resurrect the American family and so restore the American spirit and the American dream? As followers of Jesus, we don't have any option but to see this as our problem - not the government's problem or the problem of law enforcement or of the schools.
What will we do?
In faith,

Pastor Tim
