The Wilderness
Israel went into the wilderness to learn who God was, and who they were. In the wilderness, stripped from all comforts and securities, they learned to trust in God alone. So it is that Lent marks Jesus' wilderness experience; 'for forty days and forty nights' our Lord was tempted. In whom do you trust? For Jesus, the answer was clear, "in God alone".
Lent is drawing to a close. For those who abandon hope, there is only the cross; for those who hold on to their faith, the cross will not be the last word.
Many of you who are reading this know far too much about wilderness. The recession has been devastating to SW Florida - people have lost homes and jobs and some have even lost their hope. Some others have experienced the wilderness of declining health, even the demons of cancer and dementia.
Yet for all who trust in God alone, Easter is coming! The wilderness does not last forever; heartache is not the last word. In the wilderness, and perhaps most in the wilderness, God is at work.
