My message today will be short but happy :)  You will all be getting an extra beautiful, exciting and useful gift this season that you probably did not know about.  It is big, not mobile, sort of expensive but not glitzy and is ever so practical.  It comes with windows, doors, walls, a roof, chairs, tables and much love.  Best of all it is anchored to a fabulous 30,000 acres of this extraordinary planet.  It could be seen as a tool that will be used to help educate and connect thousands of people, mostly but not just kids, to a landscape composed of prairies, savannas, wetlands, birds, reptiles, mammals, sun, wind and rain and it is too big to put under any tree.

By now you may have guessed that this is a building and I want you to know that it is the new Oak Savanna Learning Center located in the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge right here on the northern edge of the Anoka Sand Plain.  Although there is much to say, I said my "words" would be short and so the above link will get you more details on this project.  Please check it out.

Here I simply want to emphasize three things with you:
  1. We (you, me, them, us) need this building.
  2. Your tax dollars have paid for most of it so THANK YOU!!
  3. The balance (approximately $50,000) of our fund drive has yet to be found.  Make your tax-deductible contribution now and PRI will match (up to $25,000) your funds dollar for dollar.  This is a wonderful opportunity to double your contribution so think about it seriously!  The end result will be a gift to the greater good that will benefit our environment and tens of thousands of students and visitors.  It is a lasting gift that you can see, touch, visit and be very proud of.  Please help us to finish our fund drive and make this happen.
In closing, I just want you to know that all of us at PRI wish you a great holiday season and promise to do our best to continue our efforts to carry this mission forward.

Enjoy,
Ron Bowen

year 2015 - The Year of the Pollinator
uline

It's hard to believe that another year has come and gone.  It seems like just yesterday our crews were getting geared up for the spring burn season.   And now winter is here - at least according to the calendar - and the holiday season is in full swing.

From an environmental standpoint, 2015 could easily be considered "The Year of the Pollinator."   It seemed that every day there was a story in the media about pollinators, their drastic decline in numbers and what can be done to help.  Couple this with the monarch butterfly crisis and, in my 18 years at PRI, I have never seen such an overwhelming and positive response to a single environmental cause.  Countless businesses, organizations and individuals have stepped up and established native pollinator habitat on their own properties. People are feeling empowered with the knowledge that their efforts can truly make a difference, even if it means planting just a small corner of their backyard.

It's this type of effort and passion that will need to continue if we are to make significant headway.  There is lots left to do and with everyone pitching in, we can make a meaningful difference.

Looking forward to a great 2016!

EE Employee Profile:  Joe Sanderson
uline

Joe Sanderson started working for Prairie Restorations in 2013 as a Land Management Specialist and works out of the Prairie Creek office in Northfield. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from St. Cloud State University, he decided to follow his passion for the outdoors instead, and found employment in the natural resources field.

Joe is responsible for all aspects of prairie and woodland management ranging from chemical application, mowing, woodland invasive cutting, and prescribed burning. He also is responsible for managing the summer seasonal crews in the field. Joe enjoys prescribed burning and has been attending additional training to increase his knowledge and skills. He likes the strategy of planning and completing a successful burn. Joe enjoys the diversity of his work at PRI, where every day brings new challenges.

Joe lives in Rosemount and was recently hired on by the Rosemount Fire Department. Like many of us at PRI, he enjoys a variety of outdoor sports such as fishing and the like. Joe is also an avid long distance runner and recently completed his fourth marathon. When not at work, Joe enjoys traveling and spending time with his wife Kate and their month-old baby girl, Isabel.

Project News:  Whitetail Woods Regional Park
uline

There is a new regional park in southern Dakota County - Whitetail Woods - and Prairie Restorations, Inc. is working to restore over 100 acres and enhance about 200 acres within the park.  The whole project will be ongoing over the next four years and will include removal of invasive woody brush, control of non-native species, re-introduction of fire to the landscape, prairie reconstruction and planting native trees and shrubs.

The project began December 1st with PRI crews concentrating primarily on buckthorn and non-native brush removal.  Next spring we'll launch into restoration activities intended to restore and improve the park's tallgrass prairies, wetlands, wetland fringes as well as oak savannas and oak woodlands.  It's very rare that a large, contiguous piece of property is purchased for both recreation and restoration purposes.  We're very grateful to be included in the efforts to restore this property's native plant communities back to health.  It's one of the biggest projects we have undertaken and we're very excited to get started.

prairiedaySave the Date - Prairie Day 2016!
uline

Back by popular demand, we are proud to announce that Prairie Day will return again in 2016!  The event will be held at our Princeton Farm on August 13th.  Planning has begun and details are being worked out, but it promises to be a great day of learning and enjoyment for the entire family.

One of the highlights of the day will include the opportunity to observe monarch butterflies visiting our blazing star flower plots.  Envision literally hundreds and hundreds of monarchs fluttering about - it is an amazing sight!

More details to come but in the meantime, Save the Date!

 virgin Spotlighting:  Virgin's bower
uline

Virgin's bower (Clematis virginiana) is a native vine found growing throughout Minnesota with the exception of the north central region of the state.  It's most commonly found growing along the woodland edges of mesic hardwood forests and brushy areas along stream banks.  The small white, showy flowers bloom in July and August and are great for attracting bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators. Another benefit of this plant is that it's not only resistant to insects and disease, but also deer and rabbits.  In nature Virgin's bower is often seen growing up and covering smaller trees or shrubs. So we recommend planting this one in a spot where it can do some climbing or creeping.  It's a great choice for softening a rock wall, or even better yet, rip rap along a shoreline.

Interested in the concept of landscaping with native plants but wondering just where to begin?  A visit to our Resource Library may be the answer.  Packed with pages of useful information, this library can help you get acquainted with all things native.  And remember, an on-site consultation with one of our restoration ecologists is only a phone call away!

"Get a life in which you are generous.  Look around at the azaleas making fuchsia star bursts in spring; look at a full moon hanging silver in a black sky on a cold night.  And realize that life is glorious, and that you have no business taking it for granted."
