Pruning Seminar

Greetings!

"Surely as cometh the Winter, I know
There are Spring violets under the snow."
~ R. H. Newell

Even though winter is still with us, it is comforting to know that it will be spring here before we know it.  In the meantime, Dufferin Garden Centre has colour in our greenhouse and more on the way next week, just in time for Easter!

Isn't it great that there is more daylight hours now?  The sun seems stronger (although not quite strong enough to melt the snow) and this is the perfect time to get our gardens started, one seed at a time!

There is still time to sign up for the first in our series of seminars.  Join us on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 11:00am for our Seedy Saturday Seminar where we will be discussing the practical benefits of growing our veggies and other plants from seeds.  Did you know that some of the more unusual plants can only be grown from seeds?  Register online or call 519-941-5081 to be included in this seminar.

We have all the supplies you need including soils, containers, organic and heirloom seeds, perennial seeds and don't miss the fun seeds for kids!  We now carry a new line of beautiful varieties from Livingston Seeds.

Hours:
Monday - Saturday :: 9:00am - 5:00pm
Sunday :: Closed

Easter Weekend:
Good Friday (March 29) :: 10:00am - 4:00pm

Growing Spring...One Seed at a Time!

Seedlings
Benefits:
- saving money!
- get an early start on the growing season - your seeds will love the sunshine
- opportunity to choose from a large selection of seeds
- many rare and unusual flowers and vegetables are only available by seed

Containers:
- any type will do as long as it is 2-3" deep and has drainage holes
- wide, shallow containers prevent overcrowding and excessive moisture
- most importantly they must be clean and sterile
Options:  jiffy pellets and kits have individual growing cells or plantable pots, 100% Peat Free Renewable Coir

Growing Medium:
- seeds should be started in a soilless growing mix not a garden soil (provides the optimum growing conditions, avoids disease and insect problems)
Options:  blend of sphagnum moss, vermiculite and perlite or coconut fibre (lightweight and easy to use, can be mixed with potting mix or used alone)

Seeds - Where to Start?
- choose high quality seeds packaged for the current year
- older seeds have reduced germination rates
- read the back of the package for sowing times and specific directions
- as seeds are planted, write it down!
- planting dates and seed varieties should be written on a label with a permanent marker and placed in each individual pot

Planting and Caring for your Seedlings:
1. Prior to planting, the growing mixture should be thoroughly moistened with warm water.
2. Fill the containers to within 1/2'' of the top, pack gently and fill again.
3. Check seed packages for special germination conditions such as soaking seeds.
4. Seeds can be scattered on the soil surface or placed into each individual growing cell. Most seeds should be covered with a fine layer of soil.
5. Gently moisten medium to ensure good contact between seeds and soil.
6. Cover with a clear dome.

Conditions:
- temperature: an important trigger, refer to the seed packets for the exact temperature needed
- lighting:  critical factor when starting seeds indoors, when sprouted place seedlings in a south facing window
- moisture:  seeds must be kept moist after planting, allow seedlings to dry out slightly before watering, after seeds have sprouted, remove any plastic covering to reduce moisture and humidity levels. Soilless mixes contain few, if any nutrients. Feed seedlings with a weak liquid 20-20-20 fertilizer (fish emulsion) solution three weeks after germination and continue weekly feedings until they are transplanted into the garden.

Transplanting:
- before planting seedlings in the garden, they need to be hardened off
- gradually at least one week before planting, place seedlings on a sheltered porch or under a tree for a couple of hours each day
- protect them from too much wind or hot sun
- this process prepares the plants for harsher outdoor conditions and ensures better survival rates in the garden

Feature Plant :: Rex Begonias

Rex Begonia This long-time favourite houseplant is grown for it's colourful and textured foliage.  These plants have a wide range of colours, interesting veining and puckering in the leaves.  These tropicals thrive in bright, indirect light year-round or shady gardens outside in the summer.  They prefer higher levels of humidity and rich aerated soil.

In order to highlight the foliage, pair the begonias with solid green plants with different textures that also enjoy shady gardens; such as ferns and ivys.  It will be hard to pick just one!  Try showcasing a collection of begonias in individual pots grouped together.

Zone:  10 - 11

Light Conditions:  bright, indirect light or shade to partial shade outside

Feeding:  feed every 2 weeks spring through fall with a balanced liquid fertilizer

Flowers:  insignificant, usually trimmed so as not to take away from the foliage

Foliage:  large range of colours, shapes, textures growing up to 9" long and 5" wide

Height:  12 - 18" mounding habit

Tips:  avoid overwatering or too much fertilizer

Assorted Rex Begonias now available in the Greenhouse at the Dufferin Garden Centre

Gardening Tip :: Dormant Oil

Dormant Oil Get Ready, Get Set...

This product is often sold as a kit containing Horticultural Oil and Liquid Lime Sulphur.  It is important to spray your roses, deciduous trees and shrubs, especially fruit trees, (avoid some evergreens) with a combination of Lime Sulphur and Dormant Oil to help kill over-wintering insect eggs and fungal spores.  This is a non-toxic material and not harmful to the environment.  It starts the plant material fresh and clean in the spring.  Be on the lookout during the growing season for new pests and problems.

The Dormant Oil is refined oil which is sprayed uniformly on the bark of trees and shrubs.  The oil suffocates any over-wintering insects or their eggs.

Lime Sulphur can be sprayed when plants are dormant as well as on its own during the growing season to treat any fungal problems as this does not harm leaves.

It is best to spray before the buds begin to swell and break, showing green.  Spraying of dormant oil should occur on a clear day when temperatures are expected to remain over 5 deg C (40 deg F) for at least 24 hours.  Try to avoid applying dormant oil when severe freezing trends are expected in the 3 - 4 days following application.

If there are plants under the trees you plan to spray, covering them is a good idea as the dormant oil/lime sulphur can hinder the growth of perennials.  Sprays must not be applied to fruit trees in bloom as it will harm the bees trying to pollinate the fruit trees.  It should never be applied to blue spruce as it affects the colour of the needles.

CAUTION:  completely cover tender vegetation (ie. Pansies) BEFORE spraying nearby trees and vines with dormant oil.

Cedar's Corner :: Bringing Spring Inside!

Hello to all of my friends.  I am sooo ready for spring after this bizarre winter. I think we are all ready to put the grey, damp days behind us and embrace the colours that spring has to offer.  People force bulbs such as paper whites and amaryllis at Christmas but this time of year is the perfect time to force branches of spring flowering shrubs.

Many shrubs that flower first thing in spring set their buds in the fall and stay dormant for the winter.  Take a look through your garden and see which shrubs you have.  Flower buds will look fatter and rounded this time of year contrasting to the leaf buds that are tight and pointed.

On a warm afternoon when the temperature has risen above freezing, choose your shrub.  Using a clean, sharp set of hand pruners, prune a few branches (don't take too many, save some for the real spring!), choosing to cut just about a bud or set of buds.

Pound the stems about 2" above the cut with a hammer to allow for the branch to take up more water.  Bring the branches inside,  place them in a bucket of cool water with a touch of bleach to avoid bacteria.  By keeping them in a cool, dark room such as a cellar allows them to absorb the moisture.

Once the branches start to show some colour, bring them into your warmer rooms and arrange in vases of warm water (again with a touch of bleach).  Enjoy as your branches will think this is the real deal and the buds will just explode.  You will be enjoying the scents and colours of spring in no time at all!

Looking forward to seeing you soon!
Love, Cedar
