FALLOUT CONTINUES OVER STERLING'S CONTROVERSIAL COMMENTS; SPONSORS PULL SUPPORT
Sponsors are pulling a fast break away from the Los Angeles Clippers and their embattled owner, Donald Sterling. As the condemnation of Sterling and his racially insensitive comments spread Monday, major financial supporters of the NBA franchise announced they were severing ties with the Clippers.
Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on the NBA Commissioner to take action against Sterling, and the league is holding a Tuesday afternoon press conference in New York. Also, the Los Angeles chapter of the NAACP is taking heat for planning to award Sterling with a Lifetime Achievement Award, before this incident blew that up. Critics say they should have known better.
REPORT: MORE TORNADOES, WORST OUTBREAK THIS YEAR
Three days of severe storms ripping through the country -- dozens of tornadoes, the worst outbreak this year -- cutting through neighborhoods, wreaking havoc on the roads. One family hid in a closet and another emerges to see everything around them gone. Huge. Scary. Some of the words describing the tornado that went through Yazoo, Mississippi. When the sirens went off, Tanya Bradshaw went outside thinking it would be neat to see a tornado, but she quickly changed her mind.
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for much of north Alabama. The watch area includes 17 counties. They're along a line extending from southwest of Tuscaloosa into the state's northeastern corner. Forecasters say as much as 5 inches of rain could fall, and they've also issued a flash flood watch.
I hope to talk with Bill Taylor of KENS-5.
TRANSPARENT AIRFARES ACT, HIDING THE TRUE COST OF AIRFARE?; BIG CHANGES FOR THREE MAJORE AIRLINESIf the airline industry gets its way, and it's cleverly named Transparent Airfares Act of 2014 passes, then the price of your airline ticket could drop significantly. At least, it'll look that way. Airlines say about 20% of your airline ticket goes directly to the federal government and airports in the form of taxes and fees - money that, for the most part, pays for essential services such as airport security, air traffic control and passenger facilities.
But would the cost of your ticket actually go down with the law? Nope. Instead that bargain $49 fare could ring up as more than double. Rick breaks down what the new law could mean for air travelers. And big changes are coming for passengers of Frontier, JetBlue and Virgin America, Rick explains which carriers are dropping routes and adding more fees.NYC REP. MICHAEL GRIMM HIT WITH 20-COUNT INDICTMENT
Congressman and former FBI agent Rep. Michael Grimm was charged in a 20-count indictment after turning himself in on Monday. Among the crimes Rep. Grimm is charged with are filing false tax returns, failing to report about $1 million to taxing authorities, committing mail and health care fraud, perjury and hiring illegal immigrants.
The congressman pleaded not guilty, and claimed he is not the man the government portrays him to be. He is the only Republican congressman from New York City (out of 12 more or less), and regardless of how this case ends up, looks like he'll still be on the ballot come November. Dems feeling good about their chances come the fall on this one.
HAS THE TEA PARTY LOST ITS MOJO?...ALSO, BOEHNER AND IMMIGRATION
We'll go with the same peg we gave Steve Roberts on Monday. The feisty personalities and anti-establishment fervor that fed tea party challenges in recent Republican U.S. Senate primaries are largely missing this year, a troubling sign for Democrats who want the GOP to nominate candidates with limited appeal.
Trey offers his insights as to why the Tea Party doesn't seem to be firing on all cylinders. Also, House Speaker John Boehner mocking fellow GOP House members on immigration? Was he laying down his king, not thinking clearly, or is it possible there is some strategy behind the comments?
CONGRESS RETURNS TO FULL PLATE, IF IT CHOOSES TO DO ANYTHING WITH IT
As President Obama wings back from his week-long Asia trip, Congress will have its first full day of work after a two-week vacation. There's little hope of the House and Senate making any major legislative accomplishments, with lawmakers likely to leave immigration reform, a tax overhaul, and extended unemployment benefits on the table.
But Democrats in the Senate will aim to bolster a campaign issue - by scheduling a test vote Wednesday on a minimum wage increase. Also, new ABC News-Washington Post poll with Obama's latest approval ratings.
