REDEEMER RALLIES AT
GOSHEN VALLEY BOYS RANCH

For more than a decade, Redeemer Lutheran Church has joined the boys and staff at Goshen Valley for Redeemer Day at the Ranch. On April 27, Goshen's now 35 boys were gathered again to meet our Redeemer friends. Redeemer Day began dark, cold and wet. First arrivers were Pastor Tim and Wendy. The Smith's bright smiles and great spirit lit up the Community Pavilion. Two of our 100 Chick Fil A biscuits met their intended purpose. The day that followed just kept getting better. Thank you, Pastor and Wendy!

According to Myra...

Dear Myra,

I'm relatively new to Redeemer, but I've been here long enough to notice that we miss a lot of holidays.  On Mother's Day, we barely got a "Happy Mother's Day" during the announcements and a brief prayer thanking God for mothers, for instance, and my old church had a whole special service for Memorial Day.  Shouldn't the church be a bit more cognizant of and intentional about addressing the real lives of our parishioners by making more of an effort to sing Mother's Day and patriotic songs, etc.?

Paths to Ministry
Chris Smith

Chris Smith just completed his second year at Candler School of Theology at Emory University where he is following his calling to become a worship leader.

"I've really only worked in ministry and when I was in undergrad, I took a semester off and the whole time spent in prayer and praying to God asking 'what am I supposed to do?' he says. "I was on a young adult mission trip in Mississippi and was reading a spiritually-guided book that triggered me to decide to be a worship leader, and then I decided I wanted to be a Lutheran worship leader."

Inner Treasures and Overlooked Secrets

Pew Crosses

Of all the Christian symbols, the cross is the most universally recognized and accepted.  The variations of cross shapes throughout Christian history number in the hundreds.  Redeemer's worship space reflects the centrality of the cross symbol, both in number and variety.
Wellspring Treasures

Redeeming G.R.A.C.E.

This month Redeeming G.R.A.C.E. is encouraging Redeemer members and friends to remember Wellspring Treasures stores as you complete your "spring cleaning." The Wellspring Treasures stores accept donations of new and gently used furniture, antiques, housewares, jewelry, and clothing and accessories for men, women and children. The stores generate 26% of the funding for Wellspring Living. Redeeming G.R.A.C.E. has chosen Wellspring Living's Girls Program as our church's community partner to assist in its ministry of directly helping the girls ages 12 to 17 to heal from the trauma of sex trafficking. Find the store near you.

Mom n Me joins
Hands Across the Bridge

Redeemer's Mom n Me group, which meets twice a month for Bible study, recently joined Hands Across the Bridge to provide a meal and fellowship with the residents of Lutheran Towers.  The long-time members of Hands Across the Bridge had planned a lunch of various salads so we baked desserts to serve.  As we served the Lutheran Towers residents, we were privileged by socializing with them as well.  As it turns out, we made connections with the members of Hands Across the Bridge, too.  We look forward to this new-found relationship and to continuing to serve alongside them in this capacity.  We invite any Redeemer member to join us on this quarterly mission for food and fellowship in October.  The Mom n Me members present were: Wren Carlson, Kate Elkins, Devon Hightower, Liesl Merkel, and Erika Van Hoosear. Lutheran Volunteer Corps Highlight

My name is Taryn Arbeiter and I hail from Rapid City, SD

My history with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) goes back to June 1990, when I was adopted through Lutheran Social Service of Iowa. I gained an appreciation for the ELCA's theology and legacy of social justice work at St. Olaf College in MN, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and French. Highlights of my hyper-Lutheran student career at St. Olaf included performing as violin soloist on an orchestra tour of the Pacific Northwest, appearing with Garrison Keillor on Prairie Home Companion, and meeting King Harold and Queen Sonja of Norway.

The Redeemer Piano Ensemble

On Sunday, May 5, the Sims Atrium was full of the unique sound of eight pianists at four pianos as the Redeemer Piano Ensemble, directed by Mary Brown Hinely, gave its popular concert as part of the Redeemer Concert Series.  From Bach to Beethoven to Copland, the performance included a great variety of works. The concert concluded with Mendelssohn's Allegro Brilliant, Op. 92 which has been described as one of the most technically, physically, and musically challenging work in the entire ensemble repertoire.

Atlanta Streets Alive

May 19th was a fun Sunday for Redeemer!  In the midst of rain and thunder, Peachtree Street was shut down for 4 hours for 2.7 miles for an event called Atlanta Streets Alive (www.atlantastreetsalive.com)!  We opened our doors to the public and welcomed approximately 100 people into our house of worship.  It was fun and exciting to have people walk the labyrinth, peruse our building, and spend time in our sanctuary.  We look forward to September 8th which is the next planned date for this event (mark it on your calendar and email Kate, kelkins@redeemer.org, if you'd like to know how you can get involved).  What a wonderful evangelism opportunity and way in which to participate in our neighborhood and community!

Standing on the Promise Campaign
Redeemer has responded: $325,000!

The response to the Standing on the Promise Campaign has exceeded all expectations! The congregation has exceeded its original goal of $150,000 to name a wing in the new retreat facility at Lutheranch in memory of our beloved Pastor Carl Ficken. To date, $325,000 in pledges and gifts have been received!  The great generosity of our congregation has made possible this fitting tribute and memorial to Pastor Ficken.  Redeemer is one of the first congregations in the Southeastern Synod to conduct a campaign for the Lutheranch retreat center facility. Look for campaign updates in this newsletter as we continue toward the goal of $4.9 million!

Pledge payments and one-time gifts can be made payable to NovusWay Ministries (see accompanying article about the new corporate name for Lutheridge+Lutherock+LutherSprings+ Lutheranch), earmarked "Standing on the Promise-Redeemer/Atlanta," and mailed to 28 Spruce Drive, Arden, NC 28704.
