According to Myra...
I read that the Council just approved a big fundraiser for Lutheranch. While I think this camp will be a good thing, I'm confused. Didn't we just have a campaign that started just 3 years ago for Lutheranch, and we did that in honor of Pastor Weber? And now we're doing it again? Did I miss something?

|
Bowdoin College is in Brunswick, Maine. Lutheran Services of Georgia is in Atlanta. Why would a group of volunteers travel all this way for a week long service trip?

This summer will mark the fourth year for Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC) in Atlanta. In August, we welcome new volunteers who, hearing God's call, will donate a year of their lives working for social justice. Approximately one-half of each "class" has become invested in our community and has decided to stay and work full-time. As an example, Lutheran Services of Georgia (LSG), which has three volunteers this year, has employed LVC volunteer Margaret Rossi as a full-time case manager in Refugee Services.

Redeemer members and friends joined together on March 10 for the 29th Annual Hunger Walk/Run. Over $68,000 was raised for Lutheran Services of Georgia. Pastor Matt, along with his awesome band, Starboarders, entertained the crowd of thousands as they walked passed Georgia State University Student Center. Redeemer had 38 participants who walked/ran the 3.2 miles. We showed our team spirit by proudly wearing our red SERVANT shirts and displaying our Redeemer banner. Members and friends helped raise almost $800.

Three years ago, Redeemer helped purchase the 519 acres of land that is now Lutheranch - just 75 minutes away near Tallapoosa, Georgia. Now it is time to build! During the month of April, Redeemer will respond to the ELCA Southeastern Synod's Standing on the Promise Campaign to build the multi-use retreat facility which will accommodate 100 children, youth and adults.

Redeemer Youth at Lutheranch
The Redeemer High School Youth Retreat was held at Lutheranch, March 15-17. Youth and Family Minister Greg Bohlken led the teens in a weekend of work, fellowship and relaxation. Clearing brush, eating lunch in a pickup truck, playing in the fields, hiking and playing along a creek... good stuff! Minister Greg reported that the teens' favorite part was d oing physical labor with a work crew from the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Marietta - cutting down and pulling brush off of the dam! They also enjoyed a Saturday night campfire worship (and s'mores!), cooking a meal together, and lying on the dock for late-night stargazing. For information about Youth and Family Ministry, contact Greg at gbohlken@redeemer.org.

Midtown Assistance Center volunteer Laura Quigley restocks the food pantry shelves with donations. Redeemer volunteer Jess Isler shares: "On Palm Sunday, a very small crew of Redeemer members spent four hours sorting, hefting, and stocking 41 bags of donations for the Midtown Assistance Center (MAC). Redeemer's donation of almost 800 items was very appreciated by MAC but was much less than we have donated in years past. Luckily, the cost of each item we donated will be matched by the Feinstein Foundation as part of their Food Pantry Challenge. Redeemer volunteers also participated in a project by Georgia Tech students to create a promotional video to be used by MAC. Next year, we hope Redeemer will be able to give even more to this amazing organization." Since January 1, MAC has responded to 363 requests for food. The need in our city is great! To learn more about Redeemer's Community Outreach Partner, visit www.midtownassistancectr.org. Read the story about helping a MAC client break free by Peggy McKay of Lutheran Volunteer Corps...

If so, you may be able to direct some of Thrivent's corporate giving directly to Redeemer with the $120 million Thrivent Choice program. In 2012, Thrivent members in the Redeemer congregation could have designated thousands of more dollars to Redeemer's ministries that went elsewhere or were not directed at all. Please call your Thrivent representative or visit www.thrivent.com/thriventchoice/ for more information. After you determine that you're eligible, you choose where to direct your Thrivent Choice dollars with a simple phone call or few minutes on-line.
